Looking through the maps in progress on this forum (fenris, bast remakes; achio, redmond) I'll say that it's been awesome watching the evolution of these maps and even adding my own input. But what might be most exciting are the screenshots.

And so I come to my purpose. I was thinking of a competition for the best one-room map. I mean, use EVERYTHING at your disposal to make the map look good, but limit it to one room so that you don't have to worry about using up valuable entity counts or poly counts or texture counts for any other part. And of course, we want to see them screenies and maybe even bsp or two!

Cheers!

*sighs*

well, if the thing I'm trying now works, count me in... I think that either the Ice Cavern or perhaps the Quad Res Room would be good entries... not that I'll win against these awsome ppl out there!

You can still get high poly counts in one room. Quite easily, actually. If you don't know when to stop tweaking your architecture, you can go way over the limits without even noticing. It's an interesting idea, but if I'm going to be making an amazing room I'd still rather be making one that I could eventually use in a map, and not just one for showing off. Besides, the limits aren't actually hard coded, they're merely rules for official maps. So if I WANTED to have a room with r-speeds in the 2000 level, I could. Screenshots would look nice, I'm sure, as long as no one actually tried to move around in it...

I remember a CS mapping competition where the maps got to 4500 r_speeds or so. They were freaking amazing btw.

instead of a room....

why not hold a RR competition... least it'd be a useful room. Draw up some limits...

course we'd need to offer something to the winner...

I suppose I'll try too; I've not much mapping experience, though, and none in NS. But I want to see others!

[edit]
And I suppose the RR idea is a good one; maybe we can get the best entry a place in an official map in time for "official" NS ver. 3. I don't suppose the fenris or bast teams would mind us taking over their RR

A double-post perhaps, but I think the subject matter is different enough that it is warranted
[/sidenote]

I suppose this contest could take two forms:

1. Ultimate one-room map, do ALL you want but make it look awesome. It should, though, have at least a hive location and a CC, as well as two res nodes, so that the map can load without error, and we can run around in it to admire the best parts. Part of the challenge will be to find some way for the hive and CC to coexist thematically.

2. RR competition. Self-explanatory, perhaps we should limit entity usage to only those vital to the function of the RR.

Could be nice but we need at least 2 rules at minimum

r_speeds max:

w-ploy
e-poly

Just so we don't get extremely detailed/awesome looking rooms which have r_speeds exceeding 6000 or something (I don't mind since I think my ATI 9800XT is able to still pull of some fps (not sure since it's directX 6.0 and all )

Doesn't have to be ns maximum btw...

Well, you tell me, 'cause I don't have any of the "practical sense" that comes with NS-specific mapping experiece. What would be a practical limit?

and BTW, kouji-san, your avatar just nearly scared the **** out of me; I just noticed it blinks

I think a limit of 1200 wpoly and about 3000 epoly would be fine.

Also, I have an idea. Perhaps even one more "class" of show-off maps. The "event" maps. Basically, the idea is to create as cool effects as possible with NS entities. Perhaps have a random event, each one causing an explosion and making the roof fall down, setting off several alarms complete with sounds and blinking lights, pipes breaking with steam and the lights turning red, in the background you can hear "Warning - damage to hull in sector 7F"... etc. You get the idea. Of course, these would still look cool, along with the awesome effects

Mmm.. i think ShdwStal's idea is spectacular. Events are all but completely eliminated from NS mapping. It would certainly bring some variety.

Still, let the creator of the competition decide.

Hey, the readyroom competition sounds nice. Shouldn't ready rooms be semi-exempt from the poly limits anyway, since there will never be any battle going on there? I mean, even if you're running NS off an ancient SiS video card with 4mb of ram, you should still be able to get enough fps even in a high poly room to be able to find big signs that say 'join marines' or 'join aliens'...

Those r_speeds sound about reasonable ShdwStal, enough room for a nicely detailed room...

Sorry, nope it would lag you to hell because HL doesn't scale well to high w_poly counts, assuming it compiled at all you would need something like a 10 GHz athlon 64 for it to be even playable.

Are you using direct X for rendering? or running in the much better openGL mode? It isn't in any way direct X if you are using openGL, the difference is big.

If we do a RR competition, you should budget out entities, to allow for the rest of the map. E.G. you dont want 100 func_walls and such to take away much so the rest of the map would only have 175 to work with.

Example:
wpolly 1000
e.limit 50 (excluding the required/removed entities)

or make it tough, make it 25
or make it no light entities at all, only texture lights/overlays (who wouldn't)
only 1 Particle System (3 ents max)
etc...
etc...
must be smaller than 1000x1000 units....

I dunno... Just a suggestion.
• BobTheJanitorBobTheJanitor Join Date: 2003-12-10 Member: 24228Members, NS1 Playtester
Entity limits would be a good plan, just not too low. We want to make these things showy, after all. Other than that, just sticking to the above mentioned epoly/wpoly limits and making it fit the general rules for ready room creation (room for 32 info_player_starts, can't block paths to join team portals, etc.) should be all we need. Then just cut loose and run wild. Sounds like fun to me, I'm up for it.

All right then, we shall start a RR mapping competition! Guidelines:
1. average w_poly ~ 1000, max at ~1200
2. 40 entity limit seems about right (disregarding the absolutely necessary); tell me if this is just not enough
3. The objective of this competition is an *architecture* competition. Thus player interactivity (for example, the switcheable map in ns_tanith) is nice, but emphasis is on architecture (layout, lighting, perhaps some particle fx)
4. Use the default jointeam sprites. I used to be a fan of BlackPlague's custom sprites (before he turned commercial *cough cough*), but I feel that in this particular aspect we need continuity with the official maps. (And tell the creator of ns_caged to please fix the "spectator" sprite; that's something that has **** me off for a while )
5. Secret rooms are fine, but PLEASE no porno (I've played my share of customs )

As to judging, I suppose that being the originator of the contest I get to be a judge. (Note: I have no NS mapping experience, I suppose my viewpoint will be that of an experienced NS player and thus my bias will be toward aesthetics rather than technical difficulty. DO keep in mind, however, that I have mapped a *bit* for CS). A number of judges will be necessary; PM me if you want a slot. I'll be looking for about 5 judges overall, with judging to be done the basis of a point system. Deadline for applications will be probably Friday the 16th, but being horrible with deadlines myself, I'll probably keep accepting them through the weekend

Good ideal Naigel, here you go!
ShenTraX: good idea, but I have no connection/reputation with that project; it might be a bit hard to convince them. Go ahead and try, if you want.

(and BTW why the heck does everybody call me "John Shue" or "John Shoe" or "John Shen"?? Even the people I know do it....it's "John Sheu", to get it right )

I asked. We'll have to wait for their response.

If we cant get them in with the Game project, then we may have to seek another alternative.

If someone is a webmaster, maybe we can set them up with a host account...

Heck i dunno.

We could set up a PayPal pool.
