Half-Life doesn't even have dynamic lighting. You were getting 'realism' from where?

There was a storyline to FarCry (and since you don't even sound like you've played it, I won't spoil it for you). It wasn't complex or very 'unique' but considering the nature and setup of the game, it was actually perfect. A complex storyline would've ruined the 'Die Hard' feeling of the game. A simplier storyline would've made it just another 'Doom'.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->better physics<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Maybe a PREFERED atmosphere, but I've seen billions of 'run around in the post-apocalyptipc city and shoot things' games, but I've only seen two games set in a jungle, and walking up to a dock and seeing minnows flee from my presence pretty much took it for me.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->better levels (Apparently it is nigh on impossible to create anything other than an island in Far Cry)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yes, you definately haven't played FarCry. It is easilly possible to create indoor levels of complexity in FarCry, and not only that, but FarCry is the only game to have a complete rendering engine capable of rendering roughly 2km+ (In real-life distances) of completely terrain and complex geometry. Everything I've seen in Half-Life that involved long distances was either low-poly, or used clever 'vis-blockers'. Look at the 'dried up lake' for instance. The majority of outdoor levels seems to rely on curves around mountains so you can't see everything.

He was the one that funded the BMRF. Some say he was the one that arranged to have the wrong crystal be put into the resonance cascade.

We'll see if the 2nd is true soon.

I am not exactly sure how they came across the name "Breen", however, I believe he is the G-Man's supervisor or something. At the end, the G-Man says something similar to this:

"The borderworld, 'Xen', is in our control, for the time being, thanks to you. Quite a nasty piece of work you've managed over there. I am impressed. That's why I'm here, Mr. Freeman. I have recommended your services to my ehh... uh... employers. And they have authorized me to offer you a job. They agree with me that you have limitless potential."

Damn, I want to meet the person who does the G-Man's voice. It's like he doesn't even notice the periods are there, and just keeps talking. It's another Hugo Weaving.

Cheats were made for people like you. I say you go to gamefaqs or something to get godmode cheat and what not. Actually, while youre there, read the faqs. They are generally good summaries of a game's plot.

*note: not an insult. This is actually how I view cheats built into games.

Here's a quickie version. I won't bother to mark spoiler tags because well, its not that big of a deal, and if you haven't bothered to beat HL in the past 5 years you aren't going to anyway.

    - Gordon puts material in big machine thing causing Resonance Cascade which makes Aliens appear
    - Dying scientists tell Gordon to go to the surface for help, gordon goes
    - Military is there to kill every living thing, alien and human, to cover it all up.
    - Military shoots at Gordon. Big mistake for the military.
    - Gordon gets captured and 2 guys who watched too much Star Wars throw him in a garbage disposal thingy w/ 2 crushing walls. Gordon escapes (obviously).
    - Scientists tell Gordon to get to Lambda lab as they are a lot smarter than he is and will know how to fix the problem
    - Gordon arrives at Lambda lab, they send him to Xen
    - Gordon jumps on a lot of stupid floating platforms in what are regarded as the most frustrating jumping puzzles in any game ever.
    - Gordon fights a Momma headcrab and wins by shooting it repeatedly in the sack. Very freudian.
    - Gordon fights a gigantic floating baby whose head opens up and he shoots fireballs out of it. I'm not making that up.
    - Game ends w/ Gordon on the tram from the beginning, except now like travelling through dimensions in hyperspace or something. G-Man talks for the first time, and offers him to either work for him or die. Player gets to choose ending.
    - Player screams "WHAT THE ****!??!?" really loudly after finding out such a great game with such a great story has one of the worst damned endings in any video game ever.

Actually in one of the videos of HL2 from E3 I have one of the Striders is killed. It kinda flops to the ground a writhes for a bit. Looks rather cool.

And Doom, I rather liked the HL1 ending. It was cryptic and interesting and kept the player guessing about much of what occured at Black Mesa, thus setting up the storyline to continue in Opposing Forces and HL2. How would you have ended HL1 Doom; I'm just curious.

Well it would seem to me at least that the point was not to end the storyline; questions were left unanswered for a reason, rather like at the end of The Matrix or Kill Bill the viewer didn't understand everything. Other games like Starcraft also left questions open (End of Starcraft what's kerrigan going to be doing, end of Brood Wars, who does Duran work for and what's this new threat that is approaching) for the same reason: to connect the original game or movie to the next installment and draw the player or viewer further into the storyline (and as a side effect, give them greater incentive to buy the next product <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Sure, if Valve were making Half Life 1 as a standalone product with no sequels or add-ons, the end game would have been very dissapointing, rather like End of Evangion (despite being the final part of the series, it left a heap of questions unanswered). But as it seems their intent was to make at the very least HL2 from the beginning, it makes sense to have a continuous storyline that connects the two products and makes the player feel like the two games are part of one, greater, unfolding plot.

Anticipation can be a nice thing; I for one am dying to learn more about the storyline of HL2. If the ending to HL1 had summed everything up neatly, I honestly wouldn't have the same level of excitement towards HL2. Similarly, if Blizzard ever gets around the making Starcraft 2 I will buy it in an instant because I love the Starcraft storyline to death (En Taro Tassadar!), and I want to know the answers to questions left open at the end of Brood Wars.

I stand by what I said earlier: if Valva had never intended to make a sequal, the HL1 ending would have been crap. However if you take the ending of HL1 as part of a greater storyline involving additional installments, I find nothing wrong with it and think it was a great way to end the first game.

Also, I probably shouldn't have mentioned The Matrix; I was actually happier before I saw the sequals than after. Although the dock fight was cool.

There is gonna be secret rooms in half-life 2? well i know some in the original one.

And half-life was really not 100 % bug free game, cuz on every level i saw some small bugs like a wrong texture aligment on a pipe, some textures was wrong on a wall..
And sometimes some problems with the sounds. I dunno, but i hopes half-life 2 will make my pc little better. My pc is hungry and wants half-life 2 headcrabs.

    One question :

Who is FatherGregory on the E3 2004 tech video? He is a little bit weird. And fat.

He talks about being in "Ravenholm". Suppose Gordon leaves City 17 to go to this Ravenholm? Maybe it's just part of City 17? (He said something like "I suspect you wish to remain in Ravenholm, so I will show you to the mines". I got the spelling off of the sign in the last part of the demo. He was the administrator of Black Mesa, the head honcho. And now he's the administrator of City 17. No coincedence, surely.
