    Looking absolutely great so far! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I did a few practice runs on the commander voice. Mind you, this is NOT the completed audio, heck the scripts aren't even set in stone yet... I was just getting a feeling for the voice.
    There's really no feeling in these takes, they're just tests. The completed ones should sound alot better. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    hrrm, sounds a bit forced? I dunno how else to describe it, just seems like you are trying to make your voice more scratchy/deeper. ?

    test 3 is the best, 2 is more like the above ^^^

    Yep, I'm still working on the voice, hence the warning. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> That's one of the exact things I'm working on right now actually, it's still a little too forced.

    Darkhand, I'ma bass by nature, and my voice is somewhat deep... if you'd like I could do the recordings for you

    I'd need to go out and get a half decent mic at least (I sound like a 5 year old on my current POS mic... stupid freebie XD)

    ok well im nearing the end of the brushwork (hopefully done by today), so ideally i need everything by tonight/tmmrw

    with the commander script, dont refer to a single waypoint as im bodging it with sprites remember, so just say "follow the waypoints" down to holographics or watever, and everytime u say somethin can u add like a radio click just b4 and after, kinda like u get on a walkytalky, just so it doesnt sound like hes stood right next to ya. but the radio static on the last one sounded perfect for like after he gets hoisted from his comm chair or watever

    darkhand, fancy making a script describing fairly briefly each enemy alien and chamber

    enforcer, fancy finishing off those signs and sending them to me

    sheena, i culd do with the rest of the weapon descriptions

    quick texture job up for grabs:::
    i need big cleaned up textures of the following buttons with the words "Place <i>watever</i> here". the ones i need are the infantry portal, res tower, turret factory, siege towers, and phase gate

    the button images r on the links below, remember these are gonna be viewable in the commander view as hints where to build

    Alrighty, second draft. It's alot to read, but I need feedback, so get comfy. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    ---------------------------------

    ::player wakes up in stasis::

    ::over intercom::
    Rise and shine, greenies! Time for another training session. I'm Seargeant Edwards, and I'll be your trainer. You'll be in the ALF-TIC wing today, the Alien Life Form Training and Information Center. At the end of this session you'll have a basic understanding of the creatures we've been encountering lately.

    Hmm, looks like you're the only one who came out of stasis. We've been having all kinds of strange problems with the ships systems lately and we can't track them down. Oh well! Looks like it's just you and me today, soldier.

    ::waypoint::

    Waypoints are placed on the heads up display by your commander to guide you to various destinations. Always follow your commanders orders if you want to survive. Follow these waypoints to get to the ALF-TIC wing. Double time, soldier.

    ::player crosses trigger at the ALF-TIC wing::

    This training session is for battle-readiness only. For more detailed information consult your TSA handbook. <i>(Possible text note here to visit natural-selection.org)</i>

    ::lights dim, presentation begins::

    <i>(Presentation can either be read by the commander live or can be a pre-recorded type of thing in another voice. Kinda of like a cheesy after school special type of thing. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> For the time being and for simplicity's sake I'll just word it as if the commander were reading it live for now)</i>

    Pay attention, greenie. I'm not going to repeat myself. Alright. ::papers rustle::

    Welcome to TSA training class 103, ALF-TIC training. In this session you will learn the various basic characteristics of the alien life forms we're encountering, known as the Kharaa <i>(Can I get a pronunciation here? Since the first day of 1.00 I've never been sure. KAR-ah? ka-RAH?)</i>.

    ::hive hologram appears::

    The Kharaa are essentially a single bacteria-based life form that starts out as a tiny infection. Over time it feeds and grows and anchors itself in a central location known as a hive. We've seen as many as three hives in a single infection. When the bacteria percieve a threat, they begin to create defenses in the form of the creatures you'll be learning about today. A sort of alien immune system.

    ::skulk hologram::

    The hives create skulks. Fast, agile, and deadly, they can usually eliminate any threat to the hive on their own. They attack mainly with their bite, which can tear through even hardened nanosteel almost effortlessly. Some have been known to attack by actually exploding themselves, causing massive damage to anything, or anyone, around them.
    Be especially alert when skulks are in the area. They can leap great distances to attack you, or climb walls, ceilings, virtually any surface, and ambush you.

    ::gestation egg hologram appears::

    Should this response to a threat not be strong enough, skulks can modify themselves into a number of other 'species' that are specifically designed for certain tasks.

    ::lerk hologram appears::

    For example, the Lerk. This flying creature can be a serious threat. It has a bite similar to the skulk, but it can also emit a number of gas clouds: an acidic gas cloud that can kill anything that inhales it, and a protective bacterial cloud that can stop bullets dead in their tracks.
    For some reason, this creatures scream seems to enrage any other aliens in the area, making them all attack faster. I've seen greenies drop to their knees in terror when that happens, so try to keep your wits about you, soldier.

    ::fade hologram appears::

    When all else fails, the Kharaa release the Fade. This bipedal creature is an absolute terror to behold. It can tear its prey apart with two sharp bones that protrude from its arms, or it can fire acid-filled sacks to dissolve its target from afar. The Fade can even heal itself when injured.
    In addition to all this, somehow the Fade is able cross great distances in the blink of an eye. Reasearch is currently pending on how it accomplishes this. Some say its an optical illusion, some say it exploits a loophole in physics, but everyone says its deadly.

    ::Gorge hologram appears::

    Alright then. This little fella is the Gorge. He's a support creature, a 'hive-tender' of sorts. He basically keeps the whole alien operation running. While not the most offensive creature, he's still dangerous, so don't let his chubby appearance fool you. He can spit acid at you, and can spin webs that can snare you and leave you a juicy target for another creature. The Gorge's main missions are to heal other aliens, and to builc support structures. Just what are these support structures? I'm glad you asked.

    ::holograms of all three support structures::

    These are the structures the Gorge builds, allowing even further customization among the alien offensive. These structures each allow the aliens to upgrade themselves with various features, such as stronger armor, faster movement, even the ability to cloak themselves and turn invisible. There are many more upgrades available to the Kharaa, far too many to list here. They will be covered in next semesters training, ALF-TIC 104.

    ::hologram vanishes. darkness:: <i>(Or a 'No data' hologram)</i>

    Listen, greenie. There have been rumors of another alien attack creature, one even larger than the Fade. There's no data on it though... Everyone who has reported it has never survived long enough to give any details. This is off the record, I just thought you should know about it.

    ::lights turn on::

    Alright, we're done! See? That wasn't so bad. Your next training session will be in six months when we near the Beta sector, but it'll feel like tomorrow for you. Let's get you back to stasis. See you in six months!

    ::General alarm sounds::

    Stand by soldier, hold position.

    ::onos roar, explosions and rumbles::

    ::static, alarms, screaming, general mayhem heard on intercom. for about 10 seconds, the ship shakes violently, sound of stressed metal, rumbling, explosions maybe takes a little damage here to be able to pick up a healthpack later::

    ::silence::

    ::all lights are dimmed or flashing. Various red backup lights are on::

    ::static, lower quality audio, alarms in background::

    Hey greenie, you still there? All the ships main systems just went down! We're at code red on all decks and the entire crew is stuck in stasis! You're the only one awake so I need you to assess the situation. Get to the armory. Looks like you'll be getting a crash course in weapons today, too.

    ::player gets to armory::

    <i>(Perhaps a container for each weapon with a clear window that can be opened up with a button, triggering the explanation of each)</i>

    That first set of weapons is your standard loadout. You're dropped into every location with each of these.

    ::opens window, takes weapon::

    The LMG, or light machine gun. It packs a decent punch and is fairly accurate. Its much more effective in groups, so listen to your commander and stick with your team if you plan on doing any serious damage with this.

    ::takes pistol::

    The pistol. Very accurate and fires as fast as you can pull the trigger. Good as an emergency weapon if you run out of ammo in the middle of a fight. But if you stay on your commanders good side, and you won't run out of ammo in the first place.

    ::takes knife:: <i>(Is there a model for a dropped knife?</i>

    The knife. A last resort weapon. Good for taking out defenseless targets to save ammo, like alien support structures. Don't take on a live alien with this. If its all you've got, its better to retreat.

    ::crosses further into armory::

    There are also higher level weapons your commander can give to you should they be required. Your commander is under no obligation to hand them out, though. Follow his orders and he'll reward you.

    ::takes welder::

    The welder is used to repair equipment, fix the armor of another marine, or to gain access to restricted areas.

    ::takes shotgun::

    The shotgun. Monstrous close range damage, ineffective at longer range. You've got to be brave to get in close and use this one.

    ::takes HMG::

    The HMG, or heavy machine gun. Packs more wallop than the LMG and has a bigger clip. Good for mowing down the enemy.

    ::takes grenade launcher:: <i>(Can't take the HMG and the grenage launcher. Perhaps have this one broken... when he hits the button, it sparks and dosen't open)</i>

    The grenade launcher. Good for blowing things up at a distance. Careful with this at close range or you'll blow yourself to pieces.

    ::takes Heavy Armor::

    That's Heavy Armor, a robotic armor suit that's much stronger than your standard loadout armor. It slows you down a little though. It also contains a filtration system that makes you immune to the Lerks poison gas.

    ::<i>another broken button to the jetpack perhaps?</i>::

    The jetpack allows you to fly to reach isolated areas or to evade alien attack. It runs out of energy quickly, but refuels itself. The jetpack cannot be used in conjunction with heavy armor.

    Don't forget, greenie, if you don't follow your commanders orders, he's not going to equip you. Follow orders like a good soldier.

    Alright. Follow the waypoints to get to the operations center. Maybe we can figure out what's going on from there.

    ::waypoint::

    ::player crosses trigger near infested blockage::

    What in the world is that?!

    ::player crosses trigger::

    That door is jammed up good. There's no way we're getting to operations now. Wait a minute... There's a ventilation shaft to your left. See that yellow welding icon? Use your welder to open it up and crawl through to operations. There's a supply room en route as well. Stock up.

    ::while in the vent, player crosses a trigger::

    You're a sitting duck while in vents. Get in and get out of them as fast as possible.

    ::player enters supply room::

    These are some of the supplies your commander can give you. Make sure you follow his orders, or just like with weapons, he won't give you anything.

    ::takes healthpack::

    The healthpack contains medical nanites that can patch you up enough to keep you fighting. Use them if you want to live.

    ::takes ammo::

    The ammo pack is a mini nano generator that can restock the ammunition of whatever weapon you're using at the moment.

    ::takes cat pack::

    Ahh, the catalyst pack. You don't get them too often, but when you do, they're quite a rush. You can move and fire faster when you inject them. I've got a bit of an addiction to them, myself.

    Once again, you'll never see any of this if you don't follow orders. Alright, get through that next vent.

    ::player goes through another vent, giving him a peek of the hive::

    I can't believe it! Our ship is infected! We're supposed to be immune to the Kharaa bacteria!

    ::enters operations center::

    Alright, soldier. You're no where near qualified enough to command, but you're going to have to get into a command chair and build some structures to take that alien hive down. This is an extreme circumstance, greenie. I don't want to see you commanding in the field until you get alot more experience.

    <i>(Question about this part. Should all the instruction be at once, or can individual actions still trigger sounds while in the command chair?)</i>

    ::insert explanations of various buildings::

    ::builds/repairs structures, destroys the hive::

    Great work, soldier! You did it! Without a hive, the aliens can't survive for long. I'll work on getting our distress beacon working to call for backup. If we live through this, I'll see to your promotion.

    ::end::

    ---------------------------------

    That's the second draft! Of course things will need to be added/removed based on the triggers and events available. There's still work to be done as well, like the comm chair explanations. We're getting there though. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    woah ok, ive read thru it and made notes on wat needs changing but it is getting there...

    1) u cant really say the waypoints r displayed on your heads up display (when they wont be as theyre just triggered sprites in this and may confuse the nub, just tell him to "follow ur waypoints down to blah blah")

    2) in holographics, dont bother explainging the hive, as ull see a sneak peak of it later in the vent and u can talk about it when u say "I dont believe it! our ship is infested"

    3) dont talk about the egg either, itll be much funnier to let the nub come across an egg ingame, examine it more closely only to hav an onos pop out and devour him

    4) points 2 and 3 will probably mean ull hav to adjust the script a tad for the rest of the aliens descriptions as well

    5) no weapon descriptions in the commanders voice watsoever as sheena does a really excellent job as like a computer info voice person. ive got some ideas of computer panels flicking thru the various marine upgrades which her voice will be perfect for explaining as well. at the moment ive got a corridor with all the weapons on a shelf and the name of each on a computer screen above, which the player can then "use" to get a description of, so all the commander really needs to say is somethin along the lines of "use any of the computers in this passage to get a description of the weapons"

    6) might just of been a typo but u referred to the shpi as being infected, probably best if u just stick to "infested"

    edit 7) the commander stuff::::

    erm, as far as i kno its not possible to trigger events when u drop or build structures so when the player gets in the docking room first he needs to be told to build the infantry portal and radar (ill add build waypoints) and their descriptions as one sound. and then a second sound file for when he gets in the chair, explaining the control panel and instructing the player to build a TF in the designated location, upgrade it to siege, build a few siege towers, then upgrade the radar so u can build a phase gate to get to the hive. u can leave 7 until i send u a playable version so it makes more sense if u want

    I've always pronounced Kharaa "ka-RAH" - maybe you should PM someone like Flayra about this one.

    Stasis room, by the way, is ready, dependent on what Meat_Popsicle thinks of it (I've just PM'd him the latest BSP).

    It may be possible to trigger events in the command mode with the trigger_presence. However, any structure can trigger this, so it's not very reliable.

    really? cos thatd be damn handy, ill look into it...

    brushwork i might not get done by tmmrw afterall cos ive had to redo a fair chunk of holographics (was too big) and alla the textures (there were brick and concrete textures, sorry hibame but its supposed to be on a space ship :S)

    edit: rons stasis room is lookin the business though, so once we add some frozen marines and some freezer smoke, ill post a screen

    p.s. is there a limit to the number of particle systems i can use?

    Test of new commander voice:

    Still needs timing work and more feeling in the post-onos test, but I think just talking in a lower voice and not straining sounds better.

    in theory.. no
    practically, don't overdo it with particle systems, because they are performance killers.
    2 ps visible at the same time works in most cases, but more than that drastically eats your fps when you're not on a mid- high end pc

    Same thoughts here. I'm happy with the commanders voice now when just speaking, but I need to be able to maintain that voice at all emphasis levels. I'm working on it, that's the kind of thing you take voice acting lessons for. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I just rushed the static filter the second time, in the final version it'll sound like the first one did. The difference is that I forgot to run the static through the same radio filter that the voice gets run through. Made the static sound too 'full' compared to the voice.

    Not too bad but it feels very empty. I would suggest making the room a bit smaller also as it seems rather large for my tastes.

    Agreed. I think the room is perfect, it just needs to be scaled down 60% or so. Don't forget, there's only one person in this map.
    Perhaps about the size of the room in the concept drawing in the very first post of the thread, or maybe a little larger. About the size of a room that would comfortably hold 5 or 6 marines standing around the holographic generator.

    I think the largeness of it feels good, atmospheric and captures the TSA theme nicely.

    What you really need to do is...

    see the white beams on the floor? Extend glass pilars with a frame from that stretch all the way to the ceiling.

    You should add an event that makes the player react. This is a TSA training facility. Remember the train ride at the beginning of Half Life? Something that makes the player want to go interact with but then the command ORDERS him not to go and closes the path to it.

    I think that would spice it up. BTW I like your holographic projections, they are just like the ones in Fire Warrior.

    Hmm, I forgot that the holoroom was hibames design and not yours... Perhaps some standard mapping things to fill up an empty room? Some added architecture to the ceiling and walls, etc.
    Forlorns idea about glass around the center of the holographic generator is good too. Don't want people walking through the holograms, messing up the presentation for everyone else. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    No you'd still be able to walk up to the holo gram, but see the WHITE lines on the ground in the first pic?

    Imagine if glass extended from that to the ceiling, so you have glass corners to the box, yet you'd still be able to walk in it.

    K here's what I mean, see attached pic. The red spots are where the glass should be. Keep in mind I kept some of the red spots transparent as to not obscure the pic.
