...my thing is, is think about those screenshots you showed EEK- how old was that? Back during E3 2003. Now sure, we were supposed to have the game by now, whatever, get the hell over it. But honestly, they weren't expecting you to go over there, so why should you care? What we should be paying mind to is the immersion, and especially the gameplay. Otherwise I don't see why anything else. HL1 even for its time wasn't good graphics, or nice architecture. But it was heralded as the best because it was FUN, had a pretty good story(though HL2s is gonna be much bigger), and its modability over time.
...thats why I wait for HL2. I may be more excited for D3 atm, but HL2 still has my attention.

Last time I checked HL:2 wasnt about the best graphics around, it was made for mod compatibility and to be able to be run on low end machines, unlike doom3 where you need a pretty damn good computer to run it. Farcry the same, I couldn't even play the demo due to the lag. Now eek be quiet doom 3 looks like plastic. Too much effects and shaders. They went over the top, don't like HL2 dont buy it then.

Can't believe you people have the nerve to criticize BOTH of these masterpieces after all the hard work that was(Doom 3) and is being(Hl2) put into it.

Dynamic AI sounds interesting, but I'm still uncertain if it'll work well. The AI in the original was partially dynamic (I remember being impressed), but it still wasn't that smart. I hope Valve does it right, but I remain skeptical.

People jumped out of the way of cars in GTA1 too...
Your AI arguments are rediculous. You claim something like an Imp falling out of the ceiling is scripted, and compare it to a soldier throwing a grenade back in combat. Think about it: The game engine doesn't MAKE mobs randomly pop out of places. It didn't in Doom 3 and 100% guarenteed it won't in HL2. You're not going to play through HL2 and find three striders in one location because you didn't kill one in level 12. It doesn't work that way.
A combine soldier taking you away for interrogation is scripted. A hell knight smashing out a wall and punching you in the face is scripted. A combine soldier getting killed and falling over the railing like in the E3 demo is scripted (You might not believe it but it is - real ragdolls do NOT behave like that. I guarentee you that if you were on the same platform with the soldier and crowbarred him to death he'd still fall over the edge). An imp teleporting in is scripted.
A combine soldier dropping a grenade on your head because he can't get a clear line of fire ISN'T scripted. An Imp diving out of the way of a stream of gunfire isn't scripted.
The 'AI' in the E3 demo was scripted - the 'wiggling door' and kicking it in. If that was faked, I don't see much reason to still cling to an idea that valve would never lie to us. I can say now that you'll never see that behavior in-game that isn't scripted. If a game company can make an AI that would evaluate the situation, identify the hostiles, determine cover, and act appropriately, they've single handedly blown the entire AI development field open.
I guarentee you that while the AI might not be 100% scripted, it utilizes waypoints and pathnodes.
The AI in call of duty took cover just like the grunts in HL did. The funny thing? The same guys would always take cover behind the same objects. It was scripted with simple waypoints.
To say that HL2 isn't scripted is idiocy. The AI might be good, but so was the AI in Far Cry. So far I haven't seen any behavior in HL2 to suggest that the AI is anything more then a scripted sham, considering valve had to LIE ABOUT THE AI to market the game at E3.

In Doom 3, half the AI you see is scripted, like enemies using cover, or Imps dropping from the ceiling. It's all triggers.
Now, what I have read, heard, and seen from various sources of HL2 - it's AI is much more advanced. Less scripting and triggers will probably be used.
