Just compare maps made with the half life engine originally -- say crossfire or subtransit -- with maps being made now. Say, just about any of the official NS maps. Or some of the work being done by the nightwatch team. It's hard to believe that they're built on the same engine. The tools are just a conduit for getting your creativity from your head to the level; the limit comes from what you can fit, not what you can make. Well, sometimes what you can make. But you can always go make Doom 3 maps or something.

Amen! I'm increasingly more excited about the possibilities of the next generation mapping software than about the game itself.
Just compare maps made with the half life engine originally -- say crossfire or subtransit -- with maps being made now. Say, just about any of the official NS maps. Or some of the work being done by the nightwatch team. It's hard to believe that they're built on the same engine. It's not what the editor can do, it's what the engine can hold. The tools are just a conduit for getting your creativity from your head to the level; the limit comes from what you can fit, not what you can make. Well, sometimes what you can make. But you can always go make Doom 3 maps or something.
