Bast should of been removed, not remade. Same goes with Nancy.
Ns has slowly become bloated with bad maps and its time to cull a few off. However it seems that if a map has any semblance of a fanbase then thats enough to keep it included. Meanwhile servers everywhere empty as the map changes to Agora, Altair, or Mineshaft.
It seems the only way maps will ever be removed is by techincal things like loss of source files.
Mendasp, you need to sort your attitude, seriously, here they call this "Brat", comes from the "Spoiled" and "Get your own way" type of people, THEN you go and show how mature you really are, by this thread. No, thats not cool... if people critisize your work AT ALL, you become this spoiled brat, and attack, instead of asking why.
Show a little respect to the community you assume you maintain, the rest of these people can stop brown nosing you, and instead of "OH ITS GREAT" "OMG MENDASP IS THE GOD!!" give you feedback that actually helps? Do you even ask "Why do you like this one?" nah you love the praise, like you attack the critics.
People like you are the main reason people leave this community. Think about what (as one of the contributers) you say, as people like you are the image of the community.. sad as it is.
You need to take your head out of your arse, and ask "Why don't you like this part, or that part?"
And remember in the long run, to these people who appear to love you, you are nothing.
You people telling him his map is poor, tell him why? You are to blame for his attitude as much as any, and this thread, telling him to put it in the recycle bin... come on? You need to tell him, "I don't like this part because...." suggest something reasonable and an explanation WHY you think it'll work. Don't say "Because the old one was better". I miss old bast as much as any, but I dont critisize someones changes, just because they don't follow the old way it was. I love what he has done in refinary, (B6) there is ALOT more cover, making it far more alien friendly, as you have to admit refinary was a terrible hive to start with in previous builds, due to the well... open space, I hated the route to engine in beta 5, thats been reworked, and you cant take a 10 second stroll there now. The only gripe I have, and had WAY back too, is double res favours marine start and feedwater, giving marines a huge res boost, and making feedwater a sore hive to start in. Not alot he can do with that however, would mean reworking the entire map to change that one room.

Yes i must agree. This is a funny map and in other circumstances would be well recieved but the manner in which it was released taints it imo.
Classic bast or 1.04 (2.0) bast is different to 3.0 bast. 3.0 bast is more fair while 1.04 is mroe atmorespheric. To say 3.0 sucks because its fair is unfair <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> But a lot of people do prefere the old bast for the nostalga and atmosphere it gives out. both are good, you shouldn't take peoples critiscm to heart.
Almost every map can be fun because NS is a fun game. What you need to look at is balance. See which areas give too much bias to one race or if one team has easier access to resource nodes than the other. If the map is unbalance then the outcome of the game becomes predictable and players get bored quicker.
Mineshaft is bad because areas like U turn are too marine biased when it comes to sieging. This is due to ladders which obstruct onos and fades. Features of the map that penalise higher lifeforms are generally bad and all these little things add up to create poor maps. Other examples include slow moving elevators, doorways too low for onos to run under, extremely narrow hallways, poorly placed beams, girders, etc in the middle of rooms.
Another huge factor is the equality of the hives. If the starting hive has a huge effect on the outcome of the game, then theres a problem. Just compare starting at cargo to starting at powersilo on ns_nothing. Cargo has very easy access to 2 extra resource nodes (vent and gen). Your starting on the higher ground, so oni dont have to negociate the elevators. Powersilo gives you only nearby node. The overal connectivity of the areas is extremely poor. Its a very remote location. Common sense says move powersilo nearer to the rest of the map, add cover to those long hallways, make sure it has 2 nodes nearby, maybe raise the entire thing up to cargo's level so your not relying on elevators. Big changes for big inbalances are sometimes needed.
It can be complicated balancing a map, but most decisions are based on common sense. Often problem is level designers get emotionally attached to their work and dont want to delete problem areas, instead opting for smaller changers which aren't enough to create balance. Spending ages working on an area is no justification at all for keeping it unbalanced. You gotta be brutal sometimes.

Not alot he can do with that however, would mean reworking the entire map to change that one room.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I thought it was obvious he pulled every change to bast since he started maintaining it out of his rear end.
He shouldn't have to ask people that reply with "this map sux" why they dislike it. If they had half a brain they would give <b>constructive</b> feedback straight away. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
You of all people should know that that doesn't happen, average person who dislikes the map and where did i say that his changes came from there? I'm not saying anything on the map, I'm talking about his attitude. Infact yes i did say something, I do like what has happened with Bast, and i assume that the walkway from marine start to aft, will be updated, and be less bland and empty, as i assume he knows what he is doing, or he wouldn't have been given the map in the first place. But his attitude to people is bad, thats all, although its not 100% his fault, he needs to either cool down on his replys, or simply not reply to those people at all, in the thread you locked on the CM forum, he could have replyed to the first poster, but no, he picked up on the off topic poster, and thats the problem, HE THEN continued that into general discussion... come on wither, no matter who he is, that is below childish.
Infact, defend him all you like. Its not who you are, its the people you know.
Simple. As
