Well, I'm back from my working sabbatical. As in, working my posterior off to make the cash I'd need to fix the car. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Short version. Took the GSX over and had my mechanic check the fuel pressure.. which came back at 35psi. The stock is 27psi. Meaning my little 450cc injectors were giving a 30% rich shot, putting in as much as 585cc squirters. I ordered an AEM AFPR for $140, but it came with none of the fittings, and noplace around here sells the things. AEM wanted $220 for stuff that *should* fit my car. Said 'screw that', and ordered a $200 Aeromotive AFPR (DSM) kit a week ago. It's going on tomorrow, as it arrived yesterday. I'm a little nervous, as the richer you run, the slower the car does. So negating a 30% rich condition... and it was already fast... oogh. Gonna be scary, if it doesn't hit fuel cut (due to a prior owner being a moron and possibly compensating for the fuel cut with more fuel, instead of fixing the boost leak). The other issue with running THAT rich is that the engine puts out some unburnt fuel in the exhaust. When the car was cold, I'd notice some white smoke.. but it went away when it heated up. The problem being, when it heated up was when the exhaust manifold and turbo got hot enough to COMBUST the fuel. Heating it more. Ad nausaeum. So I don't have a turbo at the moment, I have an afterburner. :b Being non-stupid, it's been garaged since I found out. Going to drive it over to the mechanic, but that's it... I was *wondering* why the turbo was glowing bright enough to see it in fairly dense shade during the day, or around lightpoles at night. :b This would also explain why I'm losing water... boiling off, even under 13psi pressure, due to the turbo getting just THAT hot.
Also, while I was there, I noticed the problem with the cam angle sensor (which has been leaking oil)... half of it was NOT bolted down! Or more exactly, it was.. but the threads don't go down far enough to cinch it in place. Meaning, I have to pull it off and scrape off all the silicone goop they slathered on, put on a new o-ring, put it back on, and slip some washers (and a lockwasher) under the nut to shim it in tight. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Running it that rich can't be good for the engine, as all that raw fuel washes away valuable lubricants in the cylinders ... right? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Like what... oil? :b It's more that it won't burn away the deposits as effectively, creating a weaker spark (as the deposits congeal on the plugs), which only accellerates the process. Running 20W50 through it DEFINITELY didn't help though. :b The oil scraper (piston) ring is meant to handle 20W40 at absolute most, and is happiest with 10W30 or 5W30. I'm going to have to toss in a quart of ATF too, see if that'll clear out the lifters, or if I'm going to have to pull each of them and clean it out with carb cleaner. :b Which will SUCK, take all day, and necessitate borrowing a buddy's garage and torque wrench.
And since you don't get maximum firing potential, you're getting FAR less out of the fuel than you could/should, given the amount of gas you use. I'm anticipating about 30% better mileage, too... so right around 24-27mpg, which is dead center of the 23-28 city/highway spread. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Add better power, smoother idle, and quicker throttle response... and I can see why the guy sold it to me. He had no clue. ^_^

The 289 in '65 had around 195-220 hp. Your comet weighed in around 3300 lbs. (with fluids and full tank of gas of course)
Assuming 4 speed auto?
I would estimate your 1/4 time to be... mid to high 15's. The '69 mustang (boss 428) (tip top shape and stock ran 13.6). Now before you go all insane at that time, you need to remember it is a much older engine, and not as efficent as the new ones not to mention the transmission isn't nearly as efficent as well.
Basically, your comet is the same speed as a stock '97 Acura Integra Type-R. (Speed wise of course) Which is fast for a stock street legal vechile of that year.

Not only are they the rarest of the 60's/70's mustangs ( ~3000 made) but also sports Ford's most powerfull production V8 (irc) . It may only sound like it has 1 ci more displacement, but what it is really is Ford's answer to the outstanding hemi - thats right a Ford engine with hemispherical combustion chambers and at 4 ci more diasplacement than the standard mopar hemi too!
All of this is subjest to my (often tempermental) memory, but the Boss 429 was way ahead of the CJ 428 at any rate.
As I recall the 69 mustang BOSS had the 428 (which is why it was optional), I know the 70 had the 429. I could be wrong on that one, and I'm sure there were mutliple BOSS packages offered, much like the many options on the vettes (60' vette had a V6 standard, teehee)
Speaking of Vettes I owned 2. Bought a 62 hardtop in 1971 with a 396/425hp shoehorned in ... even had a working Wonder-Bar radio. Wrecked that one when I hit a wet curve and the rear end broke loose (damn studded snow tires). I then bought a 61 with no engine and in dire need of reparations, and swapped motor and tranny from the 62 into it. I wrecked the 61 several months later. The big block allowed me to spin the 60 series Mickey Thompsons forEVUH in the first 3 gears.
I was damn lucky to walk away from both of those wrecks, thanks to the beefy frames they rode on. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Its easy to tell if it has hemispherical chambers from the frankly huge rocker covers common to the Ford and Chrysler engines:
The 428 was an option on the standard mustang I think, designed to make street racers that couldn't stretch to a BOSS mouth's water. Very nice it was too, but next to the 429 its no comparison, the extra efficiency offered by the hemispherical chamber set up just outclassed everything else (hence why Chrysler hemi's are so prized, they were awesome, but expensive - making them rare).
I'm a bit of Mustang fanatic and with a parent running his own restoration shop as well as being an ex-drag racer, it comes as no suprise to people who know me that the reason I'm at uni is to get into a position later where I can run a beast like this in the UK as a daily driver. I do prefer '65's or 66's fastbacks to the later years though. You just can't beat American muscle, the shapes, the smells (I was brought up on a mixture of nitromethane and burning rubber spewing from the top fuelers - it remains my strongest childhood memory infact) and most importantly the sound of a humongous V8.
Sorry I haven't posted a pic of my car, it's a bit embrassing compared to what I know (UK car insurance + petrol prices > young male drivers), I figure you won't mind, I'm not exactly a gearhead like Talesin or Cyndane but I definatly fit the petrolhead tag, much like Depot by the sounds of it.

And time for yet another update.
Depot, you were quite right. The leaking injectors were breaking down the oil and the mixture was slipping past the scrapers into the pan, carrying carbon with it. On the up side, this means that I now have an INCREDIBLY clean engine, inside. The down side is, since it didn't maintain viscosity, the rings may have scratched or grooved the cylinder walls. Meaning a bore-out to fix it, if the compression leak is bad enough.
I'll also likely need new plugs, as running rich like that probably has them coated in carbon deposits, clogging the aperture and causing the occasional stumble I get.
Also, the fuel pump COMPLETELY screwed the injectors. One failed outright (stuck open), one was twitching a little, and the other two were getting ready to fall downhill. They've been replaced with shiny clean 450s.
Also, I've dropped on a Big16G turbo upgrade, which makes it spool MUCH happier, even if I'm still running at stock psi. Oh, and found yet another hidden upgrade.. NGK spark plug wires. Well, that saves me a hundred bucks, assuming they test clean.
Still have to scrape the crud out from under the CAS and bolt it down properly with a new O-ring. And it's still putting out some white smoke in the mornings, and getting only a little bit better mileage. Stopped by at RRE, and they said to check the knock sensor. If it hadn't been replaced, it'd most likely failed, and was reading every little vibration as knock, and retarding the timing... making mileage and power worse. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to reach, to check. :b
Next investment is littler things... new iridium spark plugs, and a datalogger cable off eBay, unless I can find someone local who'd let me borrow theirs. On the up side, I accidentally jumped from 75 to 115 in fourth, when I was trying to pass a minivan. :b
I currently have a Nissan Pathfinder <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Cars I'v had in the past: (unsure of correct order)<ul><li>1955 Ford 4 door sedan</li><li>1957 Ford convertible with a 352 in it</li><li>1957 Chevrolet 2 door sedan </li><li>1957 Chevrolet convertible, "The Black Beauty"</li><li>1961 Comet</li><li>1965 Comet Cyclone</li><li>1961 Corvette with 396/425 incl hardtop</li><li>1962 Corvette with 396/425 incl hardtop (after I wrecked the above)</li><li>1956 Ford</li><li>1978 Ford Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee Edition</li><li>1981 Mazda Pickup</li><li>1985 Mustang with 6 cylinder (sucked)</li><li>1986 Honda Accord</li><li>1987 Honda Accord</li><li>1989 Ford Bronco Eddie Baeur Edition</li><li>1999 Lexus LS400</li></ul>I'm sure I've left some out. The 57 Chevy 2 Door Sedan I rebuilt the V-8 top to bottom (bored out a 283 so it wound up with some weird cc displacement, like 307 or something), the 57 Ford ragtop I ruined the 292 in it when I was parking at the local quarry with my g/f and the engine caught fire, and I had to pour gravel on the engine (and down the carbeuretor), so dad and I shoehorned a 352 into it.

Anytime my little car newb
Being non-stupid, it's been garaged since I found out. Going to drive it over to the mechanic, but that's it... I was *wondering* why the turbo was glowing bright enough to see it in fairly dense shade during the day, or around lightpoles at night. :b
This would also explain why I'm losing water... boiling off, even under 13psi pressure, due to the turbo getting just THAT hot.

There are more cars that do this, but as you can see there is very little difference between the two. If there was no difference, they wouldn't have two cars. (Avalon = V6, Lexus V8) Keep that in mind as well. Since there is about 20,000 dollars difference between the two. I was wrong it was the solara and not that avalon, pretty close though for two different models.

Toyota does not manufacture a vehicle in it's own carline that resides on the Lexus frame or uses a Lexus engine. The Lexus LS400 does not exist in the Toyota carline as a different model with re-worked sheetmetal. I stand by this fact.

Ill do a car facts search on it when i get internet back at my home, at school now. (Not haveing internet at home sucks.)

Dont worry, i will be picking up a '69 mustang.</span>
*sigh* I had a '65 Comet Cyclone with a 289/4-speed that ran pretty well in it's class when I raced (Stock Class) at Lebanon Valley. Don't ask me for 1/4 mile times as that was nearly 40 years ago ..... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
That's how I roll.

It was a 4-speed manual, with a Hurst shifter. I do recall beating my buddy's '60 Corvette in a street race - w00h00.

Alright manual, drop that time to high 14's then :-)
Oh please, a '69 mustang with a cobra jet 428? Fairly low brow arn't they? Want you need (should you have the odd £60 000 or $100 000 lying around) is a '69 BOSS 429.
I was damn lucky to walk away from both of those wrecks, thanks to the beefy frames they rode on. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I call bluff on the 250 hp, considering you never showed an engine bay shot. :-)
(Sunfire is currently running around 250, to the crank, and around 200-210 to the wheels) Still need to take pictures of the hawt exhaust system just added.
'69 and '70 <a href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang#The_Mustang_grows_up' target='_blank'>BOSS's</a> were either the Trans Am homologation 302 short block version, or you could get one with the 429 long block Ford version of a hemi. Its easy to tell if it has hemispherical chambers from the frankly huge rocker covers common to the Ford and Chrysler engines:
<img src='http://dbusso.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/boss_429_engine.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
