Maybe I'm just a retard or I play my old consoles too much. Sega's still my favorite console maker =\
I think that if I buy a console it'll definitely be a PS3. Now the problem is, by the time the thing's released they're going to be getting even better graphics and such in PC games. along with the characteristic better gameplay.
[edit'd] I don't get why people have to join this retarded and unfortunately trendy uprising of "GRAPHICS ARE BAD, YOU CANNOT DEVELOP INNOVATION!" As gamers, we should not be moving towards either extreme, rather we should hope that both graphics and gameplay will increase in quality as the years go by. The only thing is, from what I've seen, graphics steadily increase (at least for the PC) and gameplay advances in fits of genious, spaced out over 5+ years... [/edit]
I don't see what's wrong with the design of the PS3. It looks like a high end DVD player. It fits right in with my entertainment center, and happens to match my TV and DVD/VCR... What it wrong with it? Meanwhile, there's the Xbox 360, a truly terrible design. If it were up to me, no console would take up more space than it has to, regardless of looks (but don't listen to me; my older computer doesn't even have a case anymore, so it's fairly obvious I don't care), but I recognize the need to appeal to people other than gamers. This does both, though I don't really get why they'd have a rounded side. Probably the most annoying thing about it is the fact that the lettering reminds me very strongly of the Spider-Man movies. The controller is ugly, but we really can't judge its ergonomics till we hold it. Also, they're bluetooth.
Originally, I wasn't going to buy any consoles, but the backwards compatability might just sell me on this one. There are a lot of currently unusable PSX games sitting around my house and I know there are at least 15 really great PS2 games I missed out on because in the last gen I bought an Xbox instead of a PS2 (is it obvious I prefer the strong hardware?). Another thing is the blu-ray reader; I'm not going to have to pay for a stand-alone BR player now, though I probably won't get much use out of the other features as I use my computer for all that stuff.
Nintendo can't sell to me because their most appealing games just don't appeal to me. Zelda, the Marios, Metroid... they're just not my kind of games, and yes I've tried them all in different incarnations. The only first-party Nintendo games I really love are the 2D, 16-bit Metroids, and now that there's no more GBA they're not making them anymore. Nintendo's third party support is kind of meh, which is another reason I think I'll go for a Sony this time. The Xbox had the same problem; everyone was amazed by its first shooter, Halo, and then spent several years playing Halo and waiting for Halo 2. It should be renamed Halobox. There really aren't many hard-hitting Xbox-only 3rd party titles except Riddick, and I've got the PC version.
Anyways, there's my justification for blowing $300+. Earn your favorite console producer money or deprive Sony of my not-so-hard-earned cash by convincing me that I shouldn't buy it or should go for another, for some reason that I... for some reason, have not seen. You're not working with bias; I choose the console I think represents the most fun potential. I went from Sega to Sega to Sony to Microsoft, with no loyalties, and remember, I'm a hardcore PC gamer and casual console gamer.
...
I'll probably just end up spending all my money on computer parts. Damn X800 Pro...

I've already got an X800 Pro, it's the weakest part in my system because I was sent the wrong card by the site I ordered from (I was originally going to get an AX800XT, AGP version). At least I got a refund for the extra cash.
Right now the most attractive card is the X850XT AGP version, but that's just because I'd rather not change out my mobo as well. I'm not upgrading till Unreal 3 engine games force me to; incremental upgrading costs way too much. I did it when I realized I needed a DL burner and I had a PX-712A. That first drive was a waste of money.

That's a lot higher res than most gamers can run at right now. And while yes some cards are coming out that let you run in 3200x2400, take a look at how many people have to run HL2 in 1024x768 or less. People sticking to lower resolutions for one reason or another has been the major trend ever since games started supporting higher resolutions. That isn't going to change within the next few years.
Also remember these are launch titles. Launch titles never look as good as games that have been released after the system is a few years old. Compare early PS2 stuff with what comes out on PS2 today, and its almost like its a different system. For an even more drastic change, compare the pilot NES games with games made near the end of that systems lifetime. 360 games and PS3 games are bound to get even better looking.
And of course PC's will (very quickly) catch up and in the years ahead come out looking way, way better. That's a given. But its also worth mentioning that the cost of maintaining a continual upgrades to your PC to keep it at that top of the line level will probably be $3,000 to $5,000 from now till 2010. When compared with simply $300 or $400 for the console, you have to be mad with fanboyism to write off such a large price difference as meaningless.

Check the ground (lower right corner). Pretty obvious and mundane bump mapping there. Then look to the left, on the close shot of the weapon. Sure, it's nice and curvy, but I don't doubt that these consoles will be able to render more polys than the current generation. Next up, the characters, which are what makes us all doubt the shots. Now, they certainly look very very nice, but I don't see any geometry that couldn't be done via normal maps there. Add to that the slight displacement filter that seems to lie above all the uniforms and that adds an impression of a little extra detail, and I can see this working with extant technology. They simply begin to use the methods used in cinema to draw our attention where they want it.
All in all, I'm impressed. I had so far not considered Sony because my love for Square products waned with the introduction of 3D (sorry, but I never got what's that great about FF7 and upwards) and I just never liked the scriptwriting style of MGS (give me Splinter Cell, Thief, or DX any day over it), but this certainly has potential. I don't recall seeing a $300 computer out today that can run Unreal Engine 2 games at any sort of framerate above 10, let alone Doom 3.
The way I see it, consoles will be ahead for a while, then they'll flatten out with PCs, then PC ports will have to have negligible graphics changes, and then the next wave of consoles will come out.
To Doomeh - it doesn't matter if you're a rich white boy.
To Crono - those Xbox ports are ugly, low-res, and run terribly.
Oh, and as I've said before, the main reason I prefer the PC is because it's games are just so much better. I've not had a console with more than 5-10 enjoyable games at a time, because they just don't make 'em my way. This is probably because I won't really consider playing anything that's not a FPS/RTS (I know from experience that the rest is crap to me, with the exception of 2D arcade fighters).

One other thing about this thread, all this talk is making me very happy that I enjoy games for substance over graphics. For example, NS is my favorite MP game despite offerings like Joint Ops and UT2K4, which are also great games. To me, it's better to have a decent-looking game like NS running at a perfect, constant, and high framerate than to have a great-looking game like Doom 3 running at 30-40 fps.
I am not going to buy it at release. $465 (the /. does not say $500) is way too much for me. That's 10-15 games. That's a new video card, plus 5 games. Last generation's consoles cost $300. That's 50% more.
Remember the last two consoles to come out with high prices? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3DO_Interactive_Multiplayer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeoGeo
They both failed spectacularily.
I'd say Microsoft will time a price drop and the release of Halo 3 at about the same time the PS3 comes out. If that happens, Sony will get slaughtered. This is also good news for Nintendo. They've been de-emphasizing performance and saying that they are designing the Revolution to lower game development costs. If their console comes out $100-200 cheaper than Sony's, with $10 cheaper games, plus a huge library of <$20 N64/SNES/NES games, then they'll pick up a lot of Sony's market share, even if the Revolution is less powerful than the PS3.

Damn X800 Pro...
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2379
P.S.- get the X800XL not the X800Pro
[offtopic]
I've already got an X800 Pro, it's the weakest part in my system because I was sent the wrong card by the site I ordered from (I was originally going to get an AX800XT, AGP version). At least I got a refund for the extra cash.
Right now the most attractive card is the X850XT AGP version, but that's just because I'd rather not change out my mobo as well. I'm not upgrading till Unreal 3 engine games force me to; incremental upgrading costs way too much. I did it when I realized I needed a DL burner and I had a PX-712A. That first drive was a waste of money.
Go play your PC games.
Infact, i like the ps3's lineup of games far better than the current xbox360.
If you recall, the launch titles for the ps2 and xbox kinda sucked too.
Yeah, I noticed it. It kind of bothers me.
They aren't pre-rendered, none of them.
You can make things look much nicer when you don't have to bring something to a insanely high resolution, like the PC.
XBox360's course is still to be seen: It may turn out as a Dreamcast release, may turn out well.

With modes like 720p and 1080i/p, next-gen consoles do indeed have to bring things to an insanely high resolution.

Not comparable to the resolutions we still must compete with, like 1600x1200 and now getting into 3200x2400.
But I really only like it becuase I happen to only like shooters, go figure.
You do realize that 1080i is 1920x1080, right?
Looking forward to Revolution.

They said it was gameplay.
thats because there was 1 doom 3 trailor that showed a different demon model and it looked bloody photorealistic
sorry for the tiny image but i cant find anything better

Doesn't X-Box have ports of Doom 3, Far Cry, Pariah, and Unreal Engine 2 games?
Didn't it cost $300 when it came out years ago?
I don't recall seeing a $300 computer out today that can run Unreal Engine 2 games at any sort of framerate above 10, let alone Doom 3.
The way I see it, consoles will be ahead for a while, then they'll flatten out with PCs, then PC ports will have to have negligible graphics changes, and then the next wave of consoles will come out.
So we're back to not knowing how the system compares quality wise to the x-box. Until we see actual gameplay footage that is...

Have fun.
I just found out it is a Wifi hub, and has the ability to play, through the PSP, whatever the PS3 is outputting at any time through video format.
It also connects to Sony's own secure P2P network so you can have save files anywhere in the world.
FTW.
Remember the last two consoles to come out with high prices?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3DO_Interactive_Multiplayer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeoGeo
