Virii, All Of The Place.
<div class="IPBDescription">You won't believe these numbers...</div> Well as some of you know, I occasionally do freelance computer fixoring for people who can't take care of their computers themselves.
Today I picked up two units, one is a brand new HP pavilion in the box, so of course they just wanted me to add avg, remove norton and add any spyware eliminaters.
The second one, is an older compaq persario, now while this in and of itself isn't so bad, the fact they are on dialup means I was expecting few if any virii/spyware/malware/etc.
As soon as I attempted to load AVG on there (I have fixed this one before, and I installed AVG 6.0 in Sept of 04) the database said it is out of date. Ok, so they forgot to update it once or twice, not a big deal no?
Wow, was I wrong last update is from sept 22, of 2004. Which is the date I fixed it initally. Of course on startup AVG said there were virii but it wasn't leting me run anything, like windows explorer... so I removed the harddrive, put it in my puter, and booted up and I deleted the AVG Vault folder (where the virii go when they can't be healed), there were over 168,000 files in that folder (various files that were infected). As of right now I am running AVG on that HDD, and after an hour into it, it has so far found 8600 DIFFERENT virii...
Please tell me I am not insane for thinking this is absurd for a dial up internet connection.

...my god.
I'd just wipe that one. Don't even bother with disinfecting them, it'll do more damage to Windows than leaving them in will.
You are totally right, it is absurd for a system on a PSTN connection to have nearly 7000 different varients on it.
It will be my 3rd attempt at either Maya or I can use bryce, you tell me which one and you may have it.
On with the guessing (who ever comes closest I don't expect anyone to be exact)
*edit* I will post a screen shot of the final number as well.
How many has 1 hour done?
I think about 25000 infections, but it might change if you can tell me those answers <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I figure there can't possibly be <i>that</i> many more left to find....

Must have been a major porn downloader.
Dial up... Viruses?
14038 infected files
Breakthrough, the PC that had the 39000 infections was on dial-up. VBS/Redlof only weighs in at a measly 25KB (I think)
Did the person do p2p? That was one of the reasons the job I was doing was so bad. Silly teenagers downloading pron and mp3s with p2p. They need to learn about BitTorrent instead.
Oh, and you beat my record. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
However, currently after 2 hours of scanning we have... 14,925 DIFFERENT virii.
Keep those guesses coming, and this is the last update untill I finish the scanning. (
I'll be watching Seinfield on DVD, just recieved it in from netflix today. :-)(Seasons 1-3)
(Prize still remains the same, a picture of whatever from me.) :-)
if i get this rite, im gonna play the lotto next

OMG
there a particular reason why you are bothering to do anything but a format?
I say about 18,865 in total tho
And he's not doing this because its fun to find out how many virii there are <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
