Whatever mod locks this dosen't care...
...about NS anymore.
Okay, I've played NS since release. Pubbed till late 2.0. Vet-tested 3.0 till vets were removed. Clanned from late 2.0 till last june, gave up out of boredom, am back again cleaning up my game a bit and getting into clans again.
Now, when I left, Co was popular and slowly overtaking NS. I can deal with this thanks to #nspickup, scrimming, etc.
Here is my gripe. Why are server admins allowed to run vomit-inducing extra levels, 32 man combat games, with upgrades that literally bend the game over and shove a jumbo cactus dildo up its rear end.
I cant decide whats worse, that people actually ENJOY a counter-strike pseudo clone with aliens or the people who commited this proverbial abortion in the first place. It is exceedingly pathetic that servers empty quickly after an NS map is loaded, or they say exactly this "RANDOMPUBBER: /menu"
"RANDOMPUBBER: What? no menu? This server sucks!"
*leaves*
Seriously, what the hell is up with this garbage. It is my sincere opinion that server mods should not be allowed to change the games balance in any way at all. Combat was meant for, and is balanced for 4v4 or 5v5 TOPS. 16v16 killfests are a spit in the face to what Natural-selection WAS. It USED to be a game that required not only the ability to aim, move, and adjust, but to think, strategize, and above all, adapt. Thanks. Also a pre-emptive pride obliterating ****-slap: Don't tell me that this game was only decided to be balanced via clan play because I very vividly remember balance for ALL being discussed. So get off your eliteist highhorse pubbers (you know who you are.)

CS has it's WC3 plugins and NS has it's 50 levels plugins... it's just a matter of time before people realize how stupid seriously players think these things really are.
For gods sake if you run a 50 level server put it in the frigging server title. 50levels is NOT combat, and I don't want to acctidentally run into it PLZKTHNX.
They are allowed to do this because it's their server. The only way to force people to play on unmodified server is to not distribute the server DLLs and only run official servers. And that's not something that will ever happen without money to pay for the official servers (monthly fee like MMORPGs or government funding like America's Army). Plus some people enjoy playing with those mods.

I understand that completely except for the last bit. Who can extract fun from 50 levels of insane upgrades, it isn't even NS anymore. If these people want to run these moronic mods let them but make it display a different game type than NS3.04 because really, I want to avoid whoevers garbage server runs it.
We have a nick for the newer players that are good at Co and suck at NS and they are called "Deaf Mutes" as most of them dont use or have voice comms, they never spot lone marines they dont shout "Oni in Eclipse on the PG" they just kinda ignore all and help lose the game for teamies, luckily having such a small community (80 + players) they learn real fast how play the game.Sometimes when i read whats going on in the international ns world i pity you purists that just want a good old fashioned game of ns without the plugin sceen spam, weird sounds, weird maps and stupid upgrades.I get to play ns the way it was created to be played, every night that i can log onto our server.Jeez i mean lvl 10 aliens in co are just dumb i actually dont even want to know what a lvl 50 alien is like.
Thing is though. There are times when I really don't want a long game. I just want a HMG and to spam a lot. CO offers me a quick 5 minutes of NS without having to get into a big game with lots of intricacys.
If someone wants to go and change it to how they want to play, thats fine. After all it is their server.

QFT.
anyway, ns is doomed already/
But co and siege make the odd fun game and siege believe it or not is the best for teaching newbies about what each thing does because you have the 5 minutes of peace... and the you can chuck them on an ns classic map and they wont give dumb questions like what does this do and they can actually contribute rather than running around senslessly doing nothing...
This is my opinion so don't flame.
I just find teaching new players easier on siege maps because on ns classic you are telling them what something is and something disturbs the teacher and the learner and the lesson is over because thhey are both dead...
i just dont see how co, in other words adren cele regen carpacey redem focus fades teaches you how to play classic
The larger the community, the proportionally more retarded.

I don't know what the reasons are for so many trash servers but I do get the feeling that the romance is slipping away. I'm no doomsayer but something just doesn't feel right.
Edit: Apparently it's a command for that "fifty levels" plugin. Nevermind.
Thickened skin (increase base health)
Ethereal shift (not sure, some sort of flashlight-enabled cloak thingy)
Bloodlust (like adrenaline but goes higher. You can get an onos with infinite charge)
Hunger (10% instant HP regen on kill, effect of primal scream for a short while)
And a 5th one I can't remember.
And marines:
Cybernetics (celerity for marines)
Reinforced armor (extra armor levels)
Nano armor (slowly repair armor)
Ethereal tracking (anti-ethereal shift upgrade)
Stasis field (damages aliens near you)

ya, saying /menu on all or teamspeak in a 50 levels server will bring up a # selectable menu with options for levels similar to normal combat levels... only they are not available NS upgrades and are totally unbalanced for the game, plus they wreck the way you play because it is nothing like playing the real game.
The larger the community, the proportionally more retarded.

Check for the SGS NS server.....beware we have very organised aliens and some seriuosly fast commanders. Some of our players are in Europe right now and get 200 ms pings to our server, infact i think one of em is in Knife.
Swirl the hack!
I know you all love reading my posts so I'll continue.
As I've said many, many times before NS Classic has problems with teamwork. Before you throw the "your team was noob and didn't help eachother!" crap all over my face, hold off for a second. Is it really logical to expect a bunch of random people from all over the world to work together for a 30 min time period? If you answer this with a "yes" - then I'd have to ask you why the amount of Classic players appears to be going down - and why there are more threads like "Classic sux for me now! bad servers ftl " appearing daily.
I think NS Classic is or becomes boring to many people because it's pretty much a deathmatch game that is hindered by teamplay requirments. The majority of times in a classic pub match a commander jumps in the chair, starts barking out orders, maybe people listen, maybe not. Either way, when most people join a classic match they really just roam around. I am saying this from my personal experinces throughout my years of playing Classic. It's this sense of "huh - what do I do, where do I go?" that is the core root of NS's problems. It should be obvoius where to go and what to do. Areas should hold importance, other than hive rooms and your spawn - and an interface should be telling you which of those areas needs your help. Pretty much, the game has to promote teamwork because people dont.
I've made suggestions on how to improve upon these problems - but they would require too much work - so it looks like we're stuck with this peice of crap is that is NS Classic
The issue is that vanilla combat servers stay empty, people like pwnz0ring people with 50 levels and feeling invincible while being called a hacker so the 50 level servers stay full..
It's not something we can "fix" perse... but I certainly feel your pain...
For those unfamiliar with HLSW, it allows you to monitor (and admin if you have rcon access) servers. You can see every single plugin on the server, and also the cvar settings.
Get HLSW here, use it, and quitcherdamnbitchin. No one is forcing you to play on a modded server, and all your crying in the world won't make them go away. No, they're just not going to disappear.
Btw, other than MvM and custom maps, my server is Plain Vanilla.
Join server with co_map
Find out max levels
Leave and join a server with default xp levels
Save some webspace on the NS forums

Fair enough to gripe about this, but the only thing the Dev team can do is work on some public announcement that frowns upon 50 level combat. They can't stop people from using mods to change the gameplay, but you can help empty the servers which do run 50 level combat.
If anything good comes out of this thread then it'll be a general consensus from good players to immediately leave a server (regardless of how much time you have left before your exam/wedding/spelling test ). If this much happens then Admins will get the picture that we want balanced NS games, not spamathons for whoever gets the first kill.

Zunni has been talking about some statement he's working on, which I know includes some sort of Dev opinion on spawncamping, so I wonder if maybe it'll discuss the abomination that is 50 level combat.
I'm normally very easy going when it comes to server selection but it seems that for the last weeks to months, every time I join a server it's either a) full of bots b) overloaded with custom images or sounds that I never see in game but have to spend way too long downloading c) has custom maps that look like they were built by 3 year olds d) has no open slots unless you suck up to the server ops or e) has the equivalent of god mode enabled by giving out every possible upgrade to everything and then adding new upgrades on top of that.
Maybe that does sound elitist but I've watched this game grow up and it's starting to look like a hormonally imbalanced teenager.
Don't forget the midget models.

uhm...
This is really interesting. I always thought there are only the "CO suxx" People who post into these threads. Well ig uess i ve been wrong.
Ok...so the great thing about ns_classic is:
You need teamwork to win. That is also why many games at public servers end with F4 or a commander that freaks out. But thats just the game!
Either you follow orders and work together...or you loose. Pretty simple.
In combat you have another thing...work together to win...or simply dont...it doesnt really matter as long as your skill level is high enough.
If you are pro there is no need for you to move out with another player...he ll just steal parts of your xp. It seems like combat teamwork is shortend to "someone has to welder me!" and "someone has to welder that CC!"
Of course you have teamwork if an actual team works together. Baiting/covering and all that stuff. But how will that work? Yes...exactly! If the Players know each other and play together often.
And exactly THIS...is what makes Ns_classic cool too! If you play on servers with a strong community...with the same people every day...you ll have the teamwork right there! And no yelling commanders and marines who dont follow orders. Its just about how well they know each other and if they want to play together.
And keep in mind: If you win through teamwork on a strong community server...people wont forget! So next time they will remember "ah lets go together again. worked pretty well last time." or "hey that commander was good, lets do what he says. Last time this worked"...and they will try to work together again...
perhaps you know what i am trying to say by now...
ns_ communites+server > co_

Just checked the stats and extralevels2 (50 levels) has been downloaded over 3000 times between all of it's versions. By comparison

extralevels has been downloaded 2955 times (21 levels)

Latejoin XP Giver has been downloaded 2794 times

Server Rules has been downloaded 1930 times.

Admin Icons has been downloaded 1852 times

MvM_allinone has been downloaded 1181 times.

And my point is now proven. The majority of players for any game (Let's take CS seeing how its the most popular) just click a server, play there for a map or so, then leave. If, in order for NS Classic to be fun, you have to reg on a server and get to know everyone, does that not say "hey look - here's a problem - our game requires teamwork but yet the mechanics of the game do not promote any"

QUOTE

Yes...exactly! If the Players know each other and play together often.

Pretty much the same deal. I think that players who don't reg don't find NS Classic fun. This is NS's problem - not half-assed server mods.
Don't forget the midget models.

My server is Plain Vanilla now, running only MvM and custom maps, NO gnome.
The gnome, to those of you interested, can be downloaded here.
I think there's some truth to this.
