Please let this thread die, Lerks are the best kept secret in the game . Seriously though, I won't add any strategies since everything I do is somewhere in this thread. My favorite Lerk adventure though was on ns_bast. We had cornered the Marines in their base, but they had quite a huge supply of resource points saved up (I suppose) and they seriously, and I mean seriously, had their base defended. I flew up through the elevator shaft, over all of the defenses, and landed in the corner. The turrets fired on me for a quick second while my cloaking took over. I probably spent an hour in that one corner, firing spores over and over and over again. By the time we finally broke through and won the game, I had racked up over 100 kills in that one room, without ever leaving my corner .
As lerk lovers you should all appreciate the need for Defense and Movement chambers being set up first. Nothing is better than a lerk with Adrenaline and Regeneration! So be sure to voice your opinion on your local pub server!
I really only think we need (as lerks) the movement chamber for adrenlan, but my set up is Adrln. Redeemer, and Cloak. I can get pretty much anywere i want and fly up to the corners and hide, but i'd like to be able to hang from the roof that would just own (not be able to walk on it though just hang).
Story #2, this just happened. So, I log onto my server, and find the teams are an even 6 on 6. The aliens have been winning a lot on my server, so I figured I'd join the marines for once. I spawn in, and oh dear lord, what do we have here? A commander commanding? Marines following orders? No team chat messages containing the words "n00b" or "ghey"? Anyway, as I log in, the marines have just killed off the third hive (ie the hive that makes Onoses) and are securing it. The commander recalls everyone to base, so I figure I'll just hang out and let them arrive. He drops down HMGs and HAs for every player, plants way points, and we proceed to systematically mow down hive number 2 and secure it. Needless to say, the aliens are quite unhappy as the server is now 8 on 6 in favor of marines. I really didn't want to switch teams because, to be honest, I was having a lot of fun playing for a commander who knew what he was doing. Unfortunately, people on my server knew that I was the admin, and I was asked to switch to the now defunct alien team who has one hive late in the game. I put my fun aside, and joined the aliens like a good boy .
So now I'm an alien with one hive late in the game. Boo-friggin'-hoo. My team expects to lose, and obviously, so do I; I've seen the marines playing and they are playing well. I skulk around a bit, try to bite the oncoming marines from behind while my team holds down the last hive. Needless to say, I gain quite a few deaths for my troubles (not kills mind you). I spawn back in and realize that I have the magic number of RPs, 33. I figure hell, why not. So I evolve into my beloved Lerk, fly past the marines, and head to the nearest marine-secured hive. I wedge myself up in the rafters where their turrets can't see me, and proceed to lay the smack down on their turret factory. Having destroyed it, I settle on the ground for some metal-munching and clear out the rest of the hive area. I morph into a gorg, and settle in for the RP regeneration hoping that my team can hold out awhile longer. I hit the magic number 80 and suprise my team with a newly started hive. My team is rolling with laughter, they can't believe I snuck out, cleared the entire hive of enemy structures, and started building one. Their strength is renewed (I feel like I'm in the movie 'Braveheart'). The hive gets finished, a new gorg shows up to help out securing it, and I figure, hell, I can do it twice yeah? So I morph into a Lerk, and head to the third hive. My team stunned the marines with newly created Fades (they assumed the game was almost over) while I proceeded to clear out hive number 3. Evolving into a gorg, I got the third hive up and running. By this time, my comrades had beaten the marines back near their base, so it was time for this little Lerk to go poison gas the hell out of them from the safety of the next room. I honestly couldn't believe it when the message came through that team 2 had won. Just goes to show you, never give up in the game of NS .
Wow, great story man!
Really, it can't be denied, Lerks are often underestimated as small, puny creatures who can only fly around and maybe harras a few marines, no more. No sir! We Lerks are terrible fire breathing dragons, who sow terror and death through the corridors... Ehm, that's some other story.
OK, I'm not a 1337 Lerk player, need to practice some on that (the flying especially, lol). But I do know that a single Lerk hiding somewhere in the ceiling can easily take out a marine outpost. If the room and your hideout is high enough, the turrets can't even touch you. A Lerk with regen L2 or L3 hiding in a vent can easily drive a heavy marine away even without Umbra, if his commander isn't paying attention to him. Just fire a few spikes, hide, fire again, hide, wait a few secs for regen to heal, fire... Eventually even the heaviest of the heavies will notice that you're still coming on strong while his armor is dropping seriously.
Well, you have to be pretty sure that heavy armored marine doesn't have grenades. Anyway, if he does, just speed away through the air.
I remember once, there were 2 marines in the room. They were chasing me. I picked a fairly large room and started flying around by the ceiling. The 2 poor suckers ran out of ammo and started to knife.
But i sort of didnt spike them. Wanted to bite them instead. Don't know why my computer freezes for 3 seconds every half an hour or so. Knifed me to death...
Well it was that time again. The Kharaa had pushed the marines all back to their command center and they were just barely holding off our fades with grenades.
That was when 2Lerk Crew showed up
Me and another lerk shared the frags as we gased their base. First he'd umbra both of us and I'd spore the marines. Then after 10 frags or so I'd umbra both of us and he'd spore the marines. The marines fired a slew of ammo at us, and when that didn't work they slashed at us with knives and came back with bloody stumps for wrists.
The fades got wind of our combo and shared the umbra goodness until the onos lumbered in and punished the marines for ever thinking they could build an outpost in our space and not share it with the locals. It was a good day, yo!
I don't normally play Lerk but I did have an interesting story involving one.
Picture: 1 skulk (me), 1 lerk (if you're reading this you know who you are )
We both have level three cloak.
The map is eclipse and he calls me over on the voice comm and the guy gives me this plan that is beautiful in it's simplicity.
I slip over to the door into the marine base and park myself in an upper-cieling corner, and cloak a second or two later. Now what this results in is the door opening for a bit, then closing, then opening again. My Lerk partner has already cloaked by the time the door opens, and every time it does in goes the Spore Cloud while I just sat up there snickering to myself as I watched the kill counters rise. Wish I could have looked at the marine chat logs, they were probably confused/irritated as hell
Lesson: Never underestimate the little people
i usually play as a skulk.... oh how i love teh skulk.
i think im guna give mr. lerky a little try-try when i get home today.
Even before the Glory of the godly umbra and the pain of the deadly sporecloud, the lerk is not something to be scoffed at. He is the ultimate harasser, and he can finish weakend marines(Scent of Fear) very easily. A flying , dashing Lerk is incredibly hard to hit and a very big distraction. While they try to hit you as a lerk, a skulk can dash in for a few well deserved kills. I tend to fly over a marine spikeing a few times, and once I beleive he is down low enough, I dive in for the final bite, or just keep punsihing him with spikes.I love to just flap around a room spiking every one, and I laugh my butt off when those poor turrets cant touch me. keep that in mind. Skulks may be the best ambushers, but lerks are the best assasins. With umbra they can support an army and greatly increase its lifespan, and with sporecloud....oh man...the frags just roll in.
I just realized also that my highest score so far as been with a lerk
Lerk=133 kills/2 hours Eclips (haha, of course) Skulk=109/1:40?-50 Caged Fade=79/2:00 Hera Gorge=58/1:20-30? Hera Onos(dont play this bad boy much)=43/2 hours Bast(dont know how it happend, but once I got up that elevator..wow, I just kept regening and cloaking in the corner.)
I've been playing with the lerk for a bit, and it takes a while to figure out just how insanely tough you are in that umbra cloud.
Well it was a 4v4 on NS_Nancy I think (the one with the unnamed hive). Well as soon as we got 2 hives me and my friend evolved. Me to lerk, and him to fade. We just ran around and wiped out everything we could find. Nothing could stop us, infact we took the marine base at 2 hives without even waiting for a 3rd. (well the gorge couldnt find the unnamed hive either ;p)
That was the first time ive ever won a game at 2 hives, even though ive had some rushes at 1 hive, and lots with 3 hives.
Just barely behind the skul, Lerk is my next favorite. I love seeing 2 fades trying to bomb or rocket a marine base. I know they are gonna be there for a few good minutes, so I got plenty of time to evolve into a Lerk. Get my adrenaline and regen on, say "Ready guys" (they usually say "For what?") then fly in, umbra right over the factory, and chomp away. The Fades finally figure out what I was talking about and hop into my umbra cloud and start pounding on the factory too, and in 3 or 4 seconds...no more base. I really don't need the Fades help, but it makes them feel more usefull . If I am by myself trying to clear a hive or something, I'll just make 2 or 3 runs on the factory/factories, popping back to the vent or around the corner for regen. I just love the love thinkin about what must be goin through the fade's minds. "Huh...but...we are fades...wtf"
Us Lerks pwn all, marines cant hit us as we zip around the room like a kindergartener on crack, and when we umbra in the middle of their group and parkourselves as if daring all comers
Love to see such nice stories! Especially, because they show the Lerks strength, which is greatly underrestimated. (i say this again, because poor marine suckers still think they can handle a Lerk in umbra with their heavy armor and heavy machine gun... No sir!)
You CAN'T kill a Lerk if he's a good player! HA! He wouldn't kill me. No way, i'd bite him to death. Hehehe.
Nice reading about the lerks. IMO lerks are great supporting units when they have umbra but good lerk players are a rare sight. When the team has only one hive up the lerks are completly useless (imo) and a waste of good resources compered to carapaced skulk. oh, I know, lerks can shoot down a turret from a long distance but those oppertunities are rather rare. As I said when the team has only one hive the resources are needed elsewhere than on lerks. Don't get me wrong here, I loved being supported by umbra and/or poision field. But going lerk too early hurts the team. [XOR]Sloop
Is there any way for a Marine to kill an Umbraed lerk, other than Grenades?
Knife doesn't count as a viable way at all - lerk bites are insanely damaging.
The only time I've ever killed an umbra'ed lerk is because he was a noobie; I rushed him with a knife and he ran away instead of biting me to death, letting me kick his **obscenity** with a LMG.
I agree with Sloop. Lerks are pretty much useless untill you get that second hive. Better to stay as skulk and keep your resources as close to 33 (carapace is cool) as possible to help out the hampsters. For marines to kill a lerk, concentrated HMG fire from 1 or 2 grunts should do it no prob. Just make sure to AIM! If you think about it you are better off having you HA/HMG guys kill the lerks right off the bat, then take care of the guys they are supporting, since they no longer have umbra cover. If its just you vs. the lerk, just hang back. Dont run into the umbra or waste your LMG ammo, unless the lerk just sits there forever. Otherwise, wait till it moves out of the umbra to run away or come after you. If it has adrenaline and keeps spraying umbra and trying to bite you, either run away, or whip out your knife and MAN UP!
I don't play as a marine often so I'm sure there are more effective ways to kill a lerk. Check out Frontiersman strategy...traitor. JK
No offense to those saying that the lerk is no good at one hive, but you must not be that good at playing the lerk. I had 33kills in the first 22 minutes of a tanith game. I just fly around and harass and once they are weak, I spike kill or dive bite them. Maybe I am just a really good lerk, but I have no problem leading my team as a lerk with one hive. Though I agree that a lerk main battle role changes in late game from a harasser to a support unit.
If you can, while attacking a base, use spores, period. An effiecent way to raid a base.
Hince the sig
I guess I was rash to say the lerk was useless with one hive. I should have said that I veiw it to be a better tactic to save the resources that you would use evolving into a lerk for the hampsters. The lerks bite is awesome combined with the manueverability, but I am a huge fan of the skulk. I'd rather save resources and go skulking. I really only go on a killing spree with the lerk if I happen upon some marines in between base destroying missions or supporting other units. It sure is fun though.
I like to think of the lerk the way the designers do, as a support unit. For killing I always use the skulk. The skulk is free. No worries if I die. I actually prefer the skulk over the fade and onos. Its just so fun.
But if you can get 33 kills in the first 20 minutes of a game with a lerk without dying much and wasting resources, then that is freakin awesome and more power too ya.
About the Lerk being later only as a support unit - i don't fully agree. Sure, they are great supporters with their umbra (fly straight into the marine base, spray umbra and bite turrets to death ), but they are also AWESOME for assaults.
1 hive - very good and fun harrassing 2 hives - great support and also assault 3 hives - excellent support and AWESOME assault
When we get 3 hives, i always go for assaults. And those assaults are mostly 1 vs 4 or more. (1 Lerk vs. farms of turrets and marines) Nobody can hurt me!
See a guy with a HA/HMG? No problem, umbra and spikes or bite. 2 guys in HA/HMG? Not really a problem, umbra and aim well. 3 guys or more in HA/HMG? Right, this may pose a problem... But if ur fast enough, umbra and spore them to death.
Adding 2c. In case people don't know how to use advanced hive sight: you get it and then turn on your flashlight. Normally this makes all chambers, webs, and aliens glow (cool to see the webs glowing in a dark hall and then turn off the light and they dissappear). But with advanced it makes the marines glow too! I was standing at the bottom of a ladder, as a Lerk, and umbra-ing and firing up the ladder while they tried to climb down. Funny to watch bodies drop off the ladder and hit the ground dead. One of the marines even tried to jusp drop down from the top. He died from gravity, hehe. But I couldn't see them until they started climbing. So i got advanced hive sight. Now when they poked their head over the lip of the hole they glowed! I could just shoot for the lights! Very cool! There was a resource site at the bottom of the ladder and we could have held it if the gorges were not newbs who were asking things like "so, does a gorge build stuff..." AArrggh!
Lerk is a flight master, right? Right! So, much like a skulk can hold crouch to turn off wallwalking (Marines get scared when they think you have to run after them when they can fall down slopes, but suddenly you come luging after), lerk's fallspeed should increase when holding crouch. It would make swooping in and biting somebody, then flying away much better than waiting for hl gravity to kick in, dropping on top of the marine and killing him.

It was amazing.
It's a shame the fades were so dumb that it TOOK 15 minutes ... but such is life.
