you guys always find some awesome games. another game added to my 'must-download' list...

from what i've read here, sounds like that xbox game series - what's it called? where you run around medieval japan and control one dude in huge battles, mowing down tons of troops...

If you expect the enemies to be complete pushovers, you're in for a disappointment. They'll put up a fight, particularly if you up the difficulty. You'll probably be able to beat anyone one on one, but you'll rarely be given that chance. Most close range fights are chaotic many-on-many melees. The trick to surviving is to avoid those.

Well, new version is released with a lot of changes and improvements.

Also there's the customary batch of bugs as well, but a patch version ought to be out within a couple of days or so with a bit of luck

the game IS awesome, and I'm not very far into it at all yet. I'm definitely wowed by the combat. I'm just messing around in the arena and hunting down river pirates for some seed money. is there a better way to get started? and is there a plot, etc. outside of mods? I haven't even been to a second town yet so I guess I wouldn't know. at any rate, riding by infantry and cutting them down with a sword is hella fun.

another thing I don't get is lances/polearms. the trainer guy who tells you about combat in the first town makes it sound like lances are awesome for mounted combat, and should even annihilate a dude blocking with a shield, but whenever i get stuck using a lance in the arena, I can rarely even hit anyone, and when I do, it's for like 10 damage even if I'm at a full gallop...

I am downloading it now and will install it at home later. I do hope it doesn't require any internet connectivity right?

It's called couched damage. With enough momentum and good timing you can rip anything in any armour apart.

Here's a quick how to:<ol type='1'><li>You'll need a horse. More manouverable horses are better, and speed is a great way to get good damage if your lance sucks. </li><li>Lance. Big heavy lances gather better momentum (p=mv remember? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> ) so bigger is always better. I find that, with enough speed, the actual lance isn't important. Try the lance with a rock on the end. Blunts are great because they're effective against heavy armour, which you'll be facing a lot, later on.</li><li>So you've got all the gear and are in a battle, great. You'll notice that the (lance) weapon you're holding is perpendicular to the ground. Gather some speed and your guy will lower it to more suitable headcracking height. </li><li>Make sure you know what you're targeting and charge at it, so that the target is left on your right, same side as the lance. Aim the lance tip at the target without clicking anything, and if you were successful, you'll see a "<b>Couched damage</b>" message in red.</li></ol>Couched damage is a great way to mow through infantry when you're outnumbered. The NPC's rarely use it so it's pretty much up to you to strafe that colon of archers. 1 handed lances are your friends. Make sure your horse has good defence, and that you're not the only horseman in your army. If you get dismounted, which happens often when charging infantry with 2 handers, make sure to call all your own horsemen to your aid, and maybe take one of their horses.
Throwing weapons are the best defence against bands of footmen when you're alone. Aim for the head and stay out of melee range until help arrives.

Go to the forums on the taleworlds.com page...There's a News post with links to the .800 release download. I think it's still kind of buggy or they just don't want to update their mainpage, but their is a newer version than .751

ah thanks Spoon - I figured out what I was doing wrong trying to do couched damage. I didn't realize you weren't supposed to press the attack button to pull it off...

Yeah, I did that. First time I did couched lance damage properly I got hooked on lances.

The only problem I have with M&B is I have to choose just three weapons to carry into battle, and they're all so equally awesome. For pure unadulterated slaughter, a greatsword is a must, but is generally really expensive. A shield is nice, but that takes up a slot which could be used for another weapon. Bows (mostly crosbows) are fun, but take up two slots as you need somewhere to put the arrows. Then there's thrown weapons, spears, axes, daggers and the like, and of course polearms. And I have to choose just three from that list. Grr.

    Well, there's an easy solution for that: make multiple characters <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Tried it out for the first time last night, before I had company, so I didn't get a lot of play time. Only about an hour, but it was fun. A lot more fun then I've had from rpg type games in a long time. YAY!

From .800? Just a bunch of bugfixes and a couple of tweaks. Will probably be another patch or two released in a few days to fix any remaining serious bugs.

.802 is released, with some bugfixes.

.800 has some new features like an upgraded graphics engine. Still some bugs though.

the .80x versions are really buggy so far, I'd suggest sticking with the release version if you're just starting out. I should revert back to the release version myself; .802 is more trouble than it's worth.

edit: it DOES look much cooler though in the new version. after a couple more bug fixes, it should be even more awesome than before.

Well, with a bit of luck it will be stable enough when the next patch is released...which will hopefully be within a couple of days from now.

    I can't wait to get playing again when I have my computer assembled <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    Aaaand...new patch released again: 0.803

The only problem I have with the game is the fact if you pay for a serial key you have to have the internet to activate it, so gg no more game for me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
  • SkyrageSkyrage Join Date: 2003-08-27 Member: 20249Members
Eh - there's an offline registration possibility too where you don't need the internet (directly)...you end up getting a really long code instead or something like that which you fill in and which unlocks the game on your computer...
  • LanfearLanfear Join Date: 2006-11-15 Member: 58615Members
Negative, the manual registration requires you go to a website and it has to be from the computer you are on. Else it will give you the wrong code required. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Meh...my bad then. I thought that you generated a code from the computer in which you have the game - you then used that code on another computer that's got "teh net" to recieve the activation code.

    AHA...

    Manual Activation Process

Mount & Blade allows for manual activation for use on systems which cannot connect to the internet. The process is as follows:

    1. Install Mount & Blade on the PC you wish to activate it on
    2. Run the activation, and choose "Manual Activation"
    3. You will see a screen with a Hardware Hash number and an empty box for the Activation Code
    4. Write down the Hardware Hash (you might want to write down your serial key on the same bit of paper)
    5. On a PC which has internet access, go to <a href="http://www.taleworlds.com/act/" target="_blank">http://www.taleworlds.com/act/</a>. (if that gives you problems, try <a href="http://www.taleworlds.net/act/" target="_blank">http://www.taleworlds.net/act/</a>
    6. On the activation page, enter your serial and hardware hash. Click OK
    7. You will be given a long (16 or so digit) activation code. Write this down.
    8. Return to the PC you wish to activate M&B on. Run activation and again choose "manual activation"
    9. Enter the activation code you obtained in step 7 into the box and hit ok
    10. You should be returned to the M&B splash screen, with "Mount & Blade is running in full mode" displayed to the left

And the game has to obviosly be installed on the computer, but it doesn't require to have the net whatsoever.

    Hmm? Lack of mobs?

Play for a while + have the battlesize modifier mod installed and you can get up to 1k units in the field at once (assuming your computer can actually cope with these numbers - limit was increased from 400 recently, I think)

Of course, as I said, you have to play for a while before there will be such large mobs spawning.

I got my char up to level 20 and am having a blast. I can take down black hunter parties with ease... but still can't take a damn castle <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> has anyone else managed to take a castle, with 'good' AI and full PC damage? I'm wearing full black armor with good weapons, and my party is 30ish men-at-arms and knights and crossbowmen and sharpshooters and other high-level troops, and we still get our butts handed to us. I may have to 'cheat' and turn down the difficulty a little if I can't pull it off like this...

bump because this game rules and I just got addicted to it again. It's amazing that a game with so little content can be so addictive... and I haven't even tried any of the mods yet. but skewering hapless peasants and dark knights with my great lance just never seems to get old. The battle engine really is incredible considering the game has like a 2 person dev team. I'm surprised no commercial developers have bought it or licensed it yet. sadly, there hasn't been any patches since this thread died - but I hear rumors that one will be coming within the next couple of weeks...
