it's awesome. like, in native mode, there's next to no plot, but the combat is so fun that I've still played it as much as I've played some big-name developer games. you can download the full game for free (capped at level 6) so there's no reason not to try it.

    Version .892 released...

For those who don't know about .890 +...

Several MAJOR changes and the game awesomeness has gone up an additional few steps. Incorporated a lot of features from a mod (Battle of Sicily) apparently. You can now even own your own fief (village), are several more factions now (5 instead of 2), all who has few castles each which you can take over - and increase territory that way.

Meh, and a heckload of more stuff...oh yeah, on the technical side - dual core support; basically squeezing some extra performance out. And performance in general has improved a lot whilst graphics quality has become even better.

    Check it out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Buying it back in the day seems to have been a good investment. It was cheaper back then, and the game is still improving. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Absolutely. But even when it's complete it will still be one hell of a worthwhile game to buy.

But I'm glad I got it really early on...think I paid $14 for it (12+2 for paypal). Seems that you can't get it via paypal anymore though.

It's decent, but it suffers from what it's brother, Sid meier's pirates, also suffers from. After the novelty wears off there isn't simply enough to do.

I have to agree with that. You kinda "run out of features" after a while. I suppose mods might be a way to keep the game interesting, but I've never tried one for some reason I'm not sure of.

Also, I can't seem to download the game. Apparently, Filecloud's taking revenge for me not wanting to sign up just to download a single file, so they're interrupting my download after twenty-thirty megabytes.

Well, obviously it's not a game that you can play forever, but for many the vanilla gameplay holds a surprisingly long lifetime. The mods add to the lifespan considerably and as the mod tools are also evolving, alongside the game, the mods can be made more and more complex and branched out. Only drawback is that the existing mods from older versions also have to be updated which is a bit of a pain.

    But hey, it's still a game which gives extreme value for the money <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

This is pretty much true - but like Pirates!, even though there's not too much to do, the gameplay is still so fun and addictive that you'll find yourself playing for hours anyway... I think I've played this game more than I've played some Final Fantasies... mounted lance combat, mounted 2h weapon combat, mounted 1h, archer, infantry, crossbowman, etc. - they all play differently and it all feels pretty engrossing.

I'm downloading it now and can not yet comment on it, but we've been in version .800 space for over a year so this should be quite a milestone I hope =D

Well, some pretty nice changes. More quests, villages are more alive and stuff, and most importantly, the game world is...well, it's big now...and looks much better. Along with tweaks and whatnot else...

I played through the Tutorial and some of the first town/part/level thing, and it seems pretty cool. More focused on Melee combat than anything else, but I like the way it's done.

all the weapons are fun in their own way. melee on foot is awesome until you get overrun. mounted melee is cool but you have to be careful not to get dismounted. archery is fun but you have to make sure the enemy doesn't close in on you, and have to use the tactics settings for your army to make sure they protect you. The game is an awesome sandbox even if there's no huge objective in the long run.

Well, I'm bumping this one up cause version .950 was released today, enhancing the game even further. New animations (horse jumping is sexier than ever), tons of new features, additions and whatever else that suits your fancy. As always, this release has it's fair share of bugs so it'll be the usual couple of days later before a fix is about.

Apparently you can even get ambushed by bandits in cities now. No clue how that works exactly yet though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

sweet, thanks for the heads-up. I actually just checked the website a couple days ago and was disappointed that there was no new version yet so I probably would have missed this for a few weeks =P

Cool, I tried M&B for the first time ever, and I must say I'm impressed. It felt like being a soldier in Medieval 2: Total War. Now I no longer blame cavalry for sucking in close combat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

I'm already looking into buying a serial for M&B. I enjoyed it so much I think it deserves the support, and also do my part to ensure future development <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

it's a very rad game. I've put more hours into this indy game than almost any retail game. This new version has some neat new features too. when your king goes on the war path, it can lead to some pretty epic crusades.

I saw a king with like 300 soldiers with him (zomg lolz) fighting against a hundred or so enemies. Too bad I couldn't join in the fight, the only option I got was to "not get involved" :/

[edit] I'm trying to pick a side, to be able to take part in mad fights like that. I've started raiding some of the enemy factions (can't remember the names <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ) villages and attacking their caravans. It's awesome, also solves the troop payment problems <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

do some quests for the lords of the faction you want to sign up with. eventually you'll be asked to be a merc for their army, and from there you can bug the king til you have enough renown to be an actual lord of his army. at least that's how I did it in this version. most of this functionality is new this version =p

So I did some quests and asked to be a vassal to the king. He agreed, and now I can raid and pillage the Khergit whatever villages, and also take part in those huge fights. So far the largest fight was about 150 (my side) vs 60 . They also attacked me when I was raiding a village, and it was 25 of us vs 75 of them. I won, with only a few casualties (thanks to my Surgery skill, propably <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ). I even smacked the enemy lord in the head with a spiked mace and knocked him unconscious. But right after the first battle was over, another force attacked (about 20 vs my 11) and the enemy lord escaped.

[edit] holy awesome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> . I didn't even know I had control over a village. I was looking for some mercenaries to hire, and saw a farmer in the tavern. "Sweet, a village cleaning job", I thought. The farmer told that the nearby village of Chide had been taken over by some bandits, so I of course rode to the rescue. The first thing that happened when I got there was that I recieved about 17000 denars in taxes :o . After killing all the bandits, I saw a "Manage the village"- option in the menu. So I started building a school <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I need to bump this because it's so awesome. The faction I joined, the Vaegir, have been in war with the Khergit Khanate since the beginning of the game. I've raided their villages and caravans, and sometimes crushed their armies when the odds were in my favour. So my King has really grown to like me.

Now, I saw a castle near my village being sieged. It had happened before, but usually the siege was lifted after a while and nothing really happened, apart from some fighting around the castle etc. So I rushed to aid my fellow countrymen in the siege. I noticed there were only about 90 enemies in the garrison, and several of my faction lords were patrolling around the castle. I thought "now or never!", and I started building a siege tower. It took three days to build it, and during that time an enemy army tried to attack, but got intercepted by my allied lords. So it was ~50 of my mercenaries vs ~90 enemies in the castle. I trust my forces so I ordered the attack...

The fight ensued... It was the greatest fight ever <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> . The first wave cut down the archers and took the walls. The wave was thrown back, however, when we tried to take the courtyard. We got swarmed near the enemys "spawn point", and most of my comrades were either killed or knocked unconscious. I made a desperate retreat to the wall, just hoping my shield would hold and the enemy archers wouldn't get a lucky shot. I was able to hold out until the next wave of reinforcements arrived, but got knocked out soon after that. The battle wasn't lost, however.

In the first assault, my forces killed more than half of the enemies, and I suffered only about 10 casualties. There was no time to rest or heal, so I embarked on another assault right away. The enemy had archers on the walls again, but like last time, they got cut down pretty easily. Then I rallied all the forces before assaulting the courtyard. This time the enemy had less reinforcements, so we were able to kill all of them ... except... After I had killed seemingly all of them, all my troops started acting all buggily. They ran at walls, and I thought it's because taking over castles hadn't been implemented yet, or w/e.

I called off the attack, only to find out that there was only one soldier left in the castle. I thought I'd try one more time, and I charged the castle yet again. This time, the soldier was on the wall, and my archers killed him. The siege was over, and I was victorious!! I returned to the world map to be greeted by a option to ask my King to be the owner of the castle! Indeed, my faction now controlled that castle!

Of course, I couldn't turn down the chance of having more power. A few days later I recieved word that I was now the lord of the Castle Yruma, and the neighbouring village! So now I control two villages and a castle! Unfortunately, managing castles isn't implemented yet, but taking over them is awesome... Now I set my eyes upon the castle Curaw and the surrounding villages =_=

assaulting castles and towns is some of the most fun stuff in that game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> though a lot of the time I have to resort to being cheap... if my troops can't penetrate their archers I have to take matters into my own hands and arm myself with a war bow and 3 large quivers of khergit arrows and pick off their entire army on the ramparts by myself...

Well, the final beta of Mount & Blade has just been released - 0.960...after that it is going to be version 1.0 when it will be going retail in September.

    So, grab it while it's still hot <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

as much as I love this game, I really think they should put in some goals and stuff before releasing it. Sandbox games are all well and good, but the plot and the progression are kind of hollow. I have played the game for probably hundreds of hours and it doesn't really get boring... but at the same time, it doesn't feel like there's a point to it in its current state. It needs a central plotline or something. Like, Elder Scrolls games are sandboxes and you can forgo finishing the main plot for as long as you want, but at least there IS a main plot =P
