good tips :> I'm doing most of them already, and even trying to cook my brewed beer, which is another tip I heard somewhere, but my dwarves are so hungry they're eating everything before I can cook it... and just 2 growers? I have about 15 of my 30 dwarves set as farmers and they still sometimes don't feel planting food is important enough to bother with. also, all dwarves gather crops by default and STILL no one picks the crops half the time and they whither right in the field -_-
yes, I'm full of problems and complaints. =p
why is it important to only allow 3 or so barrels? I would think the more the merrier because they're space-saving?
Two of your initial dwarves should be farmers. As you get more migrants, get some more farmers too. Processing, brewing and cooking plants reduces the need for mad farming power. And when you decide to make a dwarf a farmer, disable all other jobs and haul orders on him to make him concentrate on farming only. And when they do nothing but farm, they get more skillful at it, and work more efficiently.

I've not played DF and kinda not really much intending on it seeing as the ascii interface is a real turn off for me BUT I read the 'boatmurdered' story for a while and the time managed by StarkRavingMad made me giggle until I was in tears. I still burst into laughter just thinking back on it.
I'm not sure if we need more games with this kind of madness or just more writers who can recount a tale so well but either way I'm glad I read this thread now :p
is there a way to locate individual items? I had a dwarf make an artifact spear and I don't know what he did with it. I'd like to make sure someone makes actual use of the thing =p I checked his inventory and it looks like it's not on him...
ok, I just realized one thing I've been doing very wrong -_- I've been cooking pretty much everything, thinking it just created extra food, not realizing that cooking something like a plump helmet means you get no seeds from it. no wonder my farms are doing so badly.
He might have dropped it if he was attacked, and sometimes they just drop it soon after making it. It's a bug. You can find it by building a weapon trap with it; if it shows up on the weapon list, build with it to locate it; if it's not on the weapon list, someone must be carrying it (or it's lost, but the creator would FREAK OUT if that happend). Or, move it to your trade depot when a caravan comes in.

Eh...I was under the impression that you did get seeds from it...
But when it comes to food they say that the best thing to do is to grow plump helmets, brew it into ale and then cook the ale. The output will be very high then, and you will still get seeds from the brewing process.

Well, can't really, just have to have dwarfs constantly walking there I think to get rid of it. As for the shrub, just pick it up...herbalist needed.
Why do I only get 5 fps? This computer isn't that bad but everything takes forever!
Also: The building of one of my channels has been cancelled, can I restart it? I guess it started to flood as it was being built and my dwarfs got scared (going home to live with your auntie and uncle in bel- oh... sorry).

bah, i've got so much ######ing food and all my barrels are full, but I don't have any empty barrels to store beer and i've run out. how do you designate barrels for certain items?

In your [p] stockpile menu there is an option to reserve barrels. Change it to allow whatever number of empty barrels that will be used only for brewing and syrup making, but you need empty barrels in the first place for it to work.

I kept having to reload my fortress save because I'd strike the river and it'd insantly flood to the outside sweeping eveyone away and killing one of my miners <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Well my fortress is surviving through winter without any problems, any everyone seems to have recovered after the unfortunate loss of rhes, who decided to take a nap to close to the river side... poor bugger never had a chance.
Since Im too lazy to train my dwarves to fight, Im building an elaborate system to flood my entire base with water. Except ofcourse my rooms that have valuables in them.
I think Ill build an underground forest as well, just need to mine out some huge area of rock and flood it a few times a year.
Right, so I've got exposed veins in some of my walls meaning they can't be smoothed. If I mine them then my room is all screwed up. What do I do?

Don't worry about the flood though... It'll dry up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> I'm not quite sure about this, but I think that high mining skill -> no flood when discovering river.
And about the barrels: my way of keeping barrels free for syrup/alcohol is to make separate stockpiles for food and drink. In the food stockpile I allow only a few barrels, but in the drink stockpile there's no limit (= max barrels). And I also designate yet another stockpile near the breweries/farmer's workshops that holds only empty barrels.

I dunno if it's because I struck the river at a high point or if I mined a tile and the water was immediately adjacent. Everything's okay now though. In about mid winter with plenty of food and plant for brewing, got a huge workshop setup, now I just gotta work like mad to make a ######load of beds and stuff for the inc wave of immigrants <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
I'm moving right along and getting better at this damn addicting game... I have about 60 dorfs and my first two nobles, whih brings up my next set of questions... how do room designations work? I have all my non-nobles sleeping in a gigantic barracks (I understand I'm going to have to suck it up and give them actual rooms when the economy turns on... do I have to designate every single bed's room size and designate it as a barracks? or if 1 bed in the room sets the size and sets the room as a barracks, will all other beds I plunk down default to the same settings unless I manually change them?
and say I've got a room set as a dining room via the table, but then set the room as a study via the chair right next to it. is the room both of those things now, or does one have precidence, or what?
I was trying to figure out how to multi-source rooms to satisfy my nobles... I guess that's impossible? eg, 2 nobles can't share the same dining room even if they both have their own table and chair in it? so each noble needs at least 3 3x3 rooms - bedroom, study, dining room - all to themselves? and bigger rooms for higher nobles? I have my fortress pretty lean and mean currently, but I can see how it's going to need to get pretty huge in the long run...
I've been putting off extending past the underground river, because my military basically doesn't exist... I have some competent hunter marksdwarves, but when I hit the chasm I'm concerned they're just not going to cut it for the hordes of monsters that pour out... I guess I would just need a nice trap corridor to take care of the chasm baddies when I come to it...

Hahaha, dude it's <i>maple</i>.
So I updated my video drivers and now I get 30 FPS, oh thank god. Now I don't have to wait eons for my dwarfs to do stuff.
