hmm...

For the most part they all look exactly the same as the shots that came out a year ago, except for perhaps some minor texture improvements. And now the Combine's eyes glow fullbright...

[edit]One improvement I just noticed is p_models (weapons in their hands) cast shadows now. Hooray.[/edit]

[edit2]Also today is supposed to be the day that lots of gaming mags hit the news stands w/ new HL2 info...[/edit2]

[edit3]3DGamers now has the exact same shots too. Betcha $20 I know what shorts will be in the magazines too...[/edit3]

On my lunch hour tommorrow I'm going to go pick up my copy of COH (had a report to do today) so I'll see if they have any mags then, if they do I'll pick one up.

Who is that? Could it be the long-time mysterious character, the Administrator?

Edit: Not the Combine guys, the image in the upper right-hand part of the shot.

Not really to do with the screenshots, but it seems like it would make more sense to have armor and health next to eachother (since they basically tell you how soon you'll die). [edit] me = retarded; see posts below for reasons why [edit]

They look fine to me, especially the one looking through the gate thing. If the resolution is high enough it gets to replace a stalker pic that's my current desktop .

Hopefully we'll get the summer release mentioned in that one, other thread. Either way, nice to see new stuff.

And UltimaGecko, I don't know where you buy your drugs, but let me know. There isn't anything about Armor on the hud or anything in those shots. Perhaps you confused Armor with Ammo?

No, no; 2 is a number.

Err, yea, that ammo counter should be more to the middle...
[last time I post after not reading properly...well, hopefully, but probably not]

In my defense: Armor should still be next to health...if there is armor. But there should be armor, because Gordon wouldn't be Gordon without a hazard suit!...unless health and hazard suit power were just combined or something.

Maybe there's some armor counter I'm just not seeing...

Would these be directx 8 shots? They don't have that 'everything is shiny' look that was in the dx9 demo.

I wonder how that new Nvidia card will play it. They were putting up some impressive numbers at Toms Hardware. Some of these shots are in serious need of some AA.

I'm hoping... PRAYING, that screenshot was showing the headcrabs leaping and that my first thought that they had somehow gained the power to both raise the dead AND hover will be proven horribly horribly wrong.

I have no opposition to a corpse being dragged around by a headcrab and lobbed at me, but when they start ressurrecting the dead and flying, thats enough to force a man to spend a day pacing around the block muttering to himself in a vain attempt to grasp what he has witnessed.

I can only hope when I play through that level, my foremost thought won't be that I may soon encounter a 180 foot tall monster and have my score tallied at the end of the map.

Just read the PC Zone UK article, some interesting details along with a few of the shots DOOM found as well as new ones.

    - 15 minutes into the game was shown. Gordon walks confused around City 17, without weapons or the suit. Combine soldiers seem to be abusing civilians while Dr Breen replies to a civilian's letter on a giant monitor. Walking into an abandoned playground, a downcast civilian mutters "I was the last guy to play here" (physics-enabled see-saws by-the-way, naturally).

    - Another vehicle is shown: Combine APC with what looks like a giant rifle/machinegun on the back.

    - Valve are planning to base an add-on pack around Alyx's backstory.

    - "Half-Life 2 won't just be set in City 17. You won't be leaving the planet though, or going to Xen but we're brining pieces of Xen to Earth"

    - One picture has "Squad: Following" with the little symbol of a man on the HUD, displaying the command system you can use to order your teammates around. Of course, it's said that you don't even have to bother with this if you don't want.

    - One level is a night-time dash through an infested graveyard with quintessential monk Father Grigory at your side.

    - Stun-stick is one new melee weapon, but also an "powerful alien machinegun" is mentioned.

    - New enemy: 'Roller Mines' designed to halt your vehicle antics.

And that's about it. Aiming for a Summer release seems reasonable to me.

Halflife 2 seems so bland from those shots after a trek in the jungles and secet labs of farcry OH no I'm ruined

I never liked the Crayon coloured Far Cry it didn't look right.

However this has a level of detail much above Far Cry granted theres no jungle in the shots but if Half-Life 2 could impliment it it'd look amazing.

High-Surface-Range Rendering was probably toned down a bit, or most of the shots may have been indoors. Most of the prior 'everything is shiny' shots were when Gordon was walking over the rooftop, which was specifically to show off HSRR.

Though they might have been having problems with those new shadows and HSRR'ing the tile of the floor... not everything will be as shiny as those older movies showed.

I don't know what everyone's obsession with shininess is. It makes a lot of levels look sortof fake, how often do you see tiled floors shining like the lighthouse at Alexandria?

Looks better to me...but then again, I think Half-Life and Stalker look better than Far Cry (cartoony jungles, looks pretty good, but to bright and strange) and Doom 3 (to shiny and reflective, even if a lot of it is metal, who builds a ship out of mirror-like metal?)

In the right settings, the Doom3 engine looks absolutely fantastic - those settings happen to be that sleek futuristic style the game is set in. Far Cry is another great looking game, and it does a great job mixing the two types of environments while not looking horrible, which tends to happen when you try to use excessive bump/normal maps and specular highlights on semi-realistic stuff.

It's funny, you look at the comments on these shots on blues or the shack and it's full of Far Cry fanboys saying how horrible it looks and blah blah etc. etc. - you know, the usual . But these shots look absolutely fantastic to me. Not because every pixel is the best pixel ever in a game, but because the entire environment is just so wonderfully stylized and well constructed. The entire game just oozes of a style all to itself, which (graphically) is a huge draw for me. I don't want to see 18000000.3 engines that all look the same, I want to see different interpretations of graphical flair and stylistic control, and that is what HL2 offers. It's not realistic by any stretch, but it doesn't feel fake. There's some word that I can't quite grasp that describes the artistic style here, and in my mind, that is a very good thing

On the release fiasco, do remember that HL2 hasn't even been delayed as long as HL itself was, and this summer estimate is only the second estimate that Valve has made any statement with.

I for one could care less when it actually releases, as I will promptly buy it, but I sure hope they make this summer release so I can watch Fragmaster get his own arrogant words shoved straight back up his ****. Opinions are one thing, but using your position at a major news site to post arrogant and egocentric "I AM GOD" personal speculation as fact? Uh-uh.

These new screenshots do not impress. The grass textures and buildings look years behind the times: the houses are boxy, flat (look - no window sills or eaves), and lack detail, while the grass is not meshed well with the ground and sprite based, making it... well, ugly.

The weapon models in these shots are of lesser quality than the High Definition pack available with Half Life!

The one shot I felt is anywhere near what was shown before in e3 is the trainyard shot. While it is not intriguing or entirely atmospheric, it does show the level of detail in polygons that was shown in the demos.

I don't think these came from the X-Box, but rather from the PC... at least, it seems the folks at that news source think that way.
