Comments
The first minutes of actual combat are jaw dropping, you are leauges stronger than your enemies and you crush them easily. Strange powers you aren't familar with are at your despisoal, and soon from the goofy anticts of your soilder companions you soon realize everything is not as it seems and you are a victim of a much larger plot. Meet Tara.
This is just one of about 15 fully developed characters in this game, with full back stories and side quests avaliable to them throughout the game. With the amount of detail Squaresoft put towards making lovable and meaningful characters this game has stayed in the hearts of its fans as one of the bests. The people are what make this game great.
Now in terms of storyline this has got to take the cake, World Domination, Evil Empires, Magitek Armies, The world actually gets destroyed! And that's only half way through the game. Meet Kefka.
Kefka is the villian in this game, a maniacle court Jester bent on destruction. He poisions, backstabs, blows up, and lies his way to the top. Apperantly a coward he uses his pure evil mind to bend the world to his will, eventually actually destroying it with a power that even an Evil Emperor wouldn't dare use. Some people like their Emo Long Haired Tragic Villians, but give me a good old Sociopath any day.
The Sidequests. Wow. What more can you say about this, with so many side options in this game you could literarly spend more time doing them then beating the game. Every character has background stories threaded through the world of Final Fantasy 6, and each one is touching and deep. From Cain the knight who is haunted by the ghosts of lost families, to Shadow the loner ninja who's past is a total mystery, to Tara an Esper from another world trying to save her people and remember who she is, and of course Locke the "treasure hunter" living down a lost love and learning to love again trying desperatly to avoid losing Tara.
All in all there is so much to this game its hard to dismiss it even by the most jaded FF7 fan. I love you FF6 my true love of video games!
I have played Final Fantasy 6, but i havent finished the game yet.
It's a cool and wonderful game so far

take your time and test the game and then judge it ^_^
FF6 was meh, because (unfortunately for me, i suppose) i'd played and finished Tales of Phantasia before it..
and that game is just... well.. you know, if you've played it.

Yes, ToP owns all FF games, and indeed nearly all other RPGs at all.

FF7/Golden Saucer > FF8 / Card Game
I don't know.
I like Edgar. A noble theif? Seen that. A dark assasin? Been done.
A playboy, mechanically inclined, thoughtful, scheming, young and devoted king with brother complex.
Now you're talking.
I was however fortunate enough to play FF6 prior to PST, and from what I remember of it, it was still a great game. I still recall beating the stuffings out of countless dinosaurs to level all my characters post level 60 to storm the hell out of Kefka's Tower. The fool didn't stand a chance.
While I still remember a lot of scenes from the game, I can't really think of what scene really 'stood out' for me. The easiest element that certainly stands out would be the music, but as for being actually in game... can't remember, too many: Ghost Train, Opera, the painting that kicked my ****, moogles galore, Cyan's Kingdom, Sabin's oh so many blitzes, etc.
While the memories of these moments have certainly faded with time, the fact that I still have them in my memory must indicate that the game was quite well done.
Assuming there's time leftover after reading Dostoyevsky's Crime & Punishment, and playing 'The Longest Journey', I might take a look into finishing Chrono Trigger...
I just think if you are playing Role Playing Games, you should like the roles you play, to me they have never been about grapics or real time combat, voice acting? Fine, but if they are shallow characters that happen to speak I'm not going to be impressed.
gameplay floats my boat. which is to say, ToP floats my boat.
which is also to say, FF6 is like a sweet lullabye. *snore*
also, ToP score = win

That's fine. But the way I look at it for gameplay there are RTS, FPS, Action Adventure, Platform, puzzle, and word games. The best RPGs have always been able to tell the best stories, hence why its a niche gengre and one of my favorites.
But to show you where I'm comming from I once beat Kefka's Tower only using Locke and Terra cause I thought it would be romatic, so yah....
an good STORY rpg, i would say, was Septerra Core..
it's combat and level design were its most repetetive (and thereby boring) features.. but the story was gripping IMO
Their the company that disappoints you, then covers it up. Either that, or they dissappoint you and weed you out among the millions(yes, millions) of people playing Final Fantasy XI.
The first way though, is shown in many of their #1 RPGs- Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, their 2 "most popular" RPGs.
Looking back on them, all I can say is "Wow, what were they thinking when it came to the art?"
Final Fantasy VI was a beautiful game. It required no battle preperation other than knowing what spells to cast and when. As long as you knew the system, it was merely a matter of speed and control that would win the game for you.
Final Fantasy V was a late-blooming story, with the ingenious job system also adopted by Final Fantasy XI, them just using a different battle system.
Final Fantasy IV, my personal favorite up until this last week, is a amazing story, very traditional in its roots with the usual Squaresoft spin on everything, where the story starts hard and fast and ends the same way.
Final Fantasy IX, the unerappreciated game that to me has more to do with Final Fantasy XI than any other game in the series, even V, because it simply is hated because it doesn't put you in your usual place, and is a late bloomer. Its incredible story doesn't even get noticed by most of the hardcore Final Fantasy crowd, despite its perfect finesse to it all.
And Final Fantasy VIII, the game I learn more about every day to be the most controversial game in the series, and also the one requiring the most intelligence. The incredible Junction system to most was merely its breaking factor- they neither had the patience, or the brainpower, to get everything of what they needed then just auto-junction it, let alone doing it by hand. Those that stuck it out with patience got to see one of the best stories of love in all time, over all ways of telling, in the great way that hasn't been repeated by Squaresoft/SquarEnix to this day. Though one thing is true about it- there isn't one thing in it all Final Fantasy fans agree upon.
And then, Final Fantasy X- the most overrated game of the series, I'm surprised it even has people saying its the best. It required absolutely NO thinking, no planning, no speed required, NOTHING. In fact, I'd say that it was the weakest link, because frankly, the story is a late bloomer, and the only thing that kept people playing was the "Incredible" graphics the game had for its time. When the story finally DID get good, it started getting good, you started getting interested in what happened...then the game ended.
Final Fantasy VII though, the single most loved one of the whole series.
I don't see why. Lets see- for the time, bad graphics all around. The gameplay required no skill or intelligence. The story was the same as any in a action movie, except with the Squaresoft spin, except not done very well, being that they had the girl that EVERYONE wanted the main char to get with die, but let people like the one he went with because her buzungas were bigger than my upper body.
Its funny- FFVII is like the CS of RPGs. Overrated to a sickening degree...
The setting just 'fits'. The beginning of industrial revolution is where every Final Fantasy game should take place, not semi-futuristic FF VIII and FF X.
The story is great, given it's not as good as FF VIII and FFVI. I like the light hearted feeling and for a Final Fantasy game, I don't feel like a chore playing.
omg agree!!!

That's amazingly awesome, what's the pricetag on this one?
after all this time, I still don't entirely understand the plot of ff7... someone fill me in... jenova was, what, an alien? or an extinct life form? its purpose was to destroy the world and that desire seeped into sephiroth or something?

the whole game is about cloud being apathetic. if he cared about nothing and no one, I wished he'd just crawl in a corner and not go on the damn adventure... and if it was just a facade and he DID care about everyone, he was just a plain old jerk for not showing it and making everyone miserable. either way, not a sympathetic character in any way, shape or form. squall in FF8 was angsty, but he was passionate... cloud is just apathetic, and essentially by definition, apathy does not make for a good story. I wish the other characters dumped cloud in a ditch and continued on without him, because everyone else had actual personalities...

cloud has 2 girls fawning over him - 3 if you count yuffie - and he shrugs them all off. I guess he's either homosexual or the mako radiation neutered him, but either way, I wish they'd have filled us in.

cloud lets his most likely romantic match croak

he is a failed experiment to begin with

they go on the whole epic journey, getting one-upped at every turn, and in the end, the world is more or less destroyed anyway... IMO the ending was supposed to suggest that humanity was rendered extinct, and just Red 13's species survived; apparently the movie changes that...

I don't know, I guess it's good to have a non-happy story once in a while, but a story about utter impotence just doesn't grip me. FF8 was a beautiful love story, though the plot I admit wasn't truly as thick as some other FF games. FF6 reigns supreme -- tons of emotion, tons of hardship, tons of story and drama, and the characters pull through in the end...

*SPOILERS KTHX*
You forget the end showing Red XIII was way off in the distant future, I forget exactly, but it was at least 100 years. Advent Children follows up immediately after meteor.
As for Sephiroth and Jenova... Jenova was an Ancient which was found from 2000 years ago. This is when 'something terrible happened'. Nobody really knows, and AFAIK, its never explained. Sephiroth was 'created' by mixing Jenova cells with him either being inserted into Lucrecia, Vincent's love, or she was already pregnant and experiments were done by Professor Gast to infuse Jenova cells with him. I'm still trying to figure out if you were actually chasing the real Sephiroth, or if the real Sephiroth died and you're chasing a clone. Either way, he has the power of the ancients, and he can find the promised land. But, being the psycho he is, instead of helping the planet in finding eden, he decides he wants to destroy it, and the descendants of the 'traitors' as he explains in Cloud's flashback in Kalm, of the ancients that decided to stop trying to find the promised land and settle down. I still have no idea why he went to the promised land anyway. I'm guessing he wanted to go into it and for some reason because he was an ancient, use its power.... Like I said, for what I don't know, because meteor was already coming. Probably to make himself immortal, like any good evil villain would do. Anyways. His mistake was killing Aeris. By killing her, she joins the lifestream, and her spirit summons Holy to stop the meteor.

aha, thanks otto, you reminded me of a couple things and filled me in on a couple others... as for sephiroth -- wasn't the seph you chased the whole game just a projection of him, and the projection leads you back to his real self, which was frozen in the ice/mako/whatever it was, and that self was freed and you fight it in the endgame?
just working from memory...
my last post was a little hard on the game -- I loved the game at the time, I just get peeved at the main character for being such a yutz
6 was great but you no matter how fantastic 2d rpgs can be they can never bring a story to life as 3d can.
Also the argument about 6 Vs 7 is abit mute as 99.9% of people say the one they played first is better.
