I'm pretty sure that particular scene was scripted. I think this mainly because at one point in the video the guard will start shooting through windows at a dishwasher (whatever) that's in the room. At the time the player isn't behind the dishwasher but you see him look at where the guard is shooting and actually move behind it for cover. Looks like it was scripted for them to shoot at the player at that location (along with all the other interactiong) and the guy playing missed his cue <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Infact that entire clip has many parts where the combine will shoot at you at points that seem suspiciously scripted.

e/ upon watching the bink video again, you can see a combine soldier spawn in at the beginning as the guy purposely moves slowly passed some sort of scripted point. In the staircase there are two combine soldiers shooting at you, each missing by miles. Aparently they are targets to show off physics (tossing the barrel and hitting the soda machine) and show the effect of how the blinds move when struck by bullets (the guy outside shooting you through the window). Then when he gets to the area where there is the giant steel beam swinging back and forth, the soldiers that see you after the first swing are scripted (it seems) to fire up at the roof where the player is (simulating suppressive fire). The car blowing up at the end has a wheel that spins off after the car has been blasted a few feet. All in all it looks prett scripted. Cool none the less

Suppresive fire is not scripted. In the beta on totaly different maps they shoot in your general direction. For example a wooden crate, they SEE you crouch behind it so they try to destroy the crate(Which they will).

do they keep shooting the crate when you move away? (when they dont notice you move away)

Well to make sense they should keep shooting it... Since you said if they don't notice you moving away then they would have to presume you are still there.

What game was it that claimed that each and every AI unit had it's own daily schedule?

It was a while ago... Was it FarCry... or STALKER..? I know it wasn't HL2 or Doom3... Hmmm.

posting to say that doom 3 will run on a geforce2. lowest res/quality runs at 25 fps with a GF2 GTS and an XP 1700+

I know some people that play NS with that framerate :-]

I know Black and White was supposed to tout a "people go about daily lives" thing. I don't really see it - but that games basically only fun for whipping rocks at stuff. Since you don't get anything really for being good (except an angelic looking animal and a better looking citadel). Hopefully the benefits are more balanced in the 2nd one.

Fable is also supposed to have a (more complex) life simulation thing going on. Which seems to be there, since in one demonstration there were kids in school and guards on patrol and stuff.

If Fable is half as good as it proposes it is, it'll be great fun (as long as the controls are solid). Then again, half the stuff coming out in the next 4 months is pretty much awesome...

Rome Total War, Half-Life 2, Fable, Halo 2...pffft there's tons of them.
[maybe Stalker should fit in there too, but I'm not sure if it has a release date yet]

As long as Half-Life 2 runs on my computer it's all good (being as Fable and Halo 2 run on my Xbox...as long as it doesn't fall apart before then).

I don't think my Radeon 9200 can even run Doom 3.... *cry*
    [my Radeon might (not sure), but my 256 RAM wont <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> ]

    I'm looking forward to HL2.

If I remember correctly, HL1 was great. Why ? It certainly wasn't the graphics. The storyline was pretty linear. Yet it got just about every award on the planet.

I really don't understand all this argument over whether a building is square or round. I'm going to be running from striders, whacking zombies and shotgunning combines too much ton notice. The rest is just gravy.

Although I haven't played it, the impression I get of Farcry is that graphically it is excellent, but the gameplay is average.

    So the buildings are blocky?

Uh just out of question are you going to be looking at a building while a large three-legged thing is walking at you giving you a taste of laser?

    No I didn't think so.

Plus HL2 has much much more scope for cutscenes and whatnot (Facial Animation system for example) and a much better physics engine than DOOM3 and Far Cry.

-EDIT- and the Stephen King book was The Mist IIRC -EDIT-

    I play Doom 3 on a 9200 at work -.-

I'm interested to see the SDK's for HL2 and Doom 3. I originally got into HL coding becuase of how easy it was to work with the SDK (compared to say... Quake 3... o.o C++ made everything more logical imo). Of course since HL 1.1.0.0 and the addition of VGUI and client-side predicition it's become pure evil in some places.

Easer coding = more coders = more mods. Simple.

Doom 3's graphics I love simply because they're one of the few games that uses OpenGL (and Doom3 proves GL still pwns Direct3D <3)

Seriously, that's a poor excuse. I'm not looking at the brilliant sci-fi/horror architecture and level design in doom3 when im trying to dodge the fireballs from an imp, or sticking a shotgun down a zombie's throat, but it's still there.

Or to take it away from hl2 vs d3, when im unloading an hmg into a fade, im not paying attention to what the surroundings look like, im paying attention to the fade. Does that mean ns maps should all just be cube rooms to speed things up?

I think I saw somewhere it's about a mist that takes over a town and it fills with monsters and some people are trying to escape. The entire game isn't based on the book - some people just think the strider is based on a monster who's legs could be seen going up until they disappeared in the fog (probably connected to a hideous monster...or something).

Of course, lots of people think the striders are more based off War of the Worlds than The Mist...but whichever you want.

    Maus' quick review:

Sure, it's not going to be as graphically groundbreaking as it would have been if it came out a year ago, but apart from doom3 and farcry what is its competition, graphically? The original HL was nothing terribly spectacular graphically (unreal beat it easily) but it was a far superior game to quake2 and unreal - I have a feeling that HL2 vs Doom3 vs Farcry will be very similar to that setup.
