Try to remember the pre-loading we've done for Half-Life 2. (Some of those were big-*** files!) This should reduce the strain on the network a fair bit. If not.... well I don't care because i'm having the day off on my birthday (HL2 release day) so I can just go buy a copy.
1. Valve makes gets about 2.5 times the money from Steam sales than retail sales. There is no such contract prohibiting them from taking the money they are earning off Steam. Evidence can be found in this thread on the HL2.net forums, where a member asked a Valve employee about this. I can't be bothered to look for the exact post, but as always search is your friend.
2. Everyone will need to activate Half-Life2 via Steam before he can play. That includes Steam preloaders as well as retail buyers. Evidence can be found in one of the last posts in the above mentioned thread as well as here, a site showing the minimum requirements for HL2, where it states Internet Connection.
Of course everything may be subject to change, although i doubt it as they propably already begun pressing the discs.

I think you may be very right there....
it would be a shame to get this far(release) and then have something else to
