Both games were great, doom 3 had its moments and got really fun here and there. The graphics were better than hl2, except for the physics but their still good. Lighting in doom3 is ok, but they wanted the 'creepy' more than the good looking lighting.
Hl2 got really fun when you had to use the airboat. Nothing beat running past the chopper past the apc's shooting rockets at you and doging bullets from the combine. Twas the best part in the game. Other parts were ok I suppose, but just lost my intrest after the coast, the weapons kinda got boring or were hard to find ammo for. D3 scared me witless pretty often, I liked the style of the enemies and the weapons better. the hell area also rocked, and should have been much longer, it was a real drag to get warped back to the base for the rest of the game after Hell. the voice acting and writing in the logs rocked for immersion and creepiness and made up for what the repetitive levels didn't do.
HL2, I liked the immersion, but not as much as most people did. I mean, there was little to no revelation about the HL universe throughout the course of the game, just a lot of plot devices as an excuse for you to keep moving forward and killin' stuff. the weapons and baddies were blase, and being that this is a FPS, the weapons and baddies are supposed to be the meat and potatoes... I loved the facial expressions on the main characters, and if given the choice, would probably give up the playable part of the game for much more plot and dialogue.
hl2 obviously wins on moddability and multiplayer potential, yet we're still waiting on good mods... UT mods came out much faster than this, n'est pas?
Doom 3 was OK, not really worth the money. The graphics didn't really impress me, probably because of ugly human character models and poor art design (the entire base looks the same, and hell is a bunch of stones and skulls with fire). AI was non-existant, gameplay boring, basically the bastard child of DooM and a console-style survival horror game. I pretty much stopped playing after Hell and then came back a week later and beat it.
The funny thing is, Ressurection of Evil is a much better game but Nerve software is not as good with the engine as id was. They have lighting set up that interacts with 4 geometry surfaces at once and other small details that make it run about 10 fps slower than Doom 3.
HL2 was also a really fun game, but I find that aside from the fun physics it lacked substance in gameplay. You don't really have to do anything other than shoot if you're not messing with the grav gun.
...
But don't listen to me, Far Cry was my favorite of the three.

Far Cry is the best of the three by a large margin for one reason alone. Doom 3 and HL2 were stupidly easy even on the hardest difficulty (nightmare is easier than veteran), making playing them about as fun as a... moderately fun thing. Far Cry though, that was a man's game. One of the hardest, if not the hardest FPS in years. Playing Far Cry was a real challenge, it took skill to get anywhere, and it felt good. It gets bonus points for having dynamic combat instead of that scripted to bone crap you see in HL2 or the cramped to the point of always being the same combat of Doom 3.
The only other game I've played that had that awesome/hard/fun/dynamic thing going on was Halo, but I think I'll stop here, lest I awaken the horde of idiot fanboys who take offense to anyone saying anything good about that game.
j00 guys know, that this was also a post about the state of FPS games in general and where you hope the genre will go...
Though I will comment on Far Cry - I didn't like it too much, but I can understand what other people see in it. It's very non-linear and very hard. Personally, though, I'm much more of an action gamer than a tactical gamer (same reason I only play very small CS:S maps, on the rare occasions when I play at all. And when I do play I have my Gamecube on so that when I die I can just turn left and unpause, then pause again when I respawn).
But IMO, HL2 showed that physics can make gameplay very interesting, but games still have to have superb core gameplay to be truely classic (though the presentation of HL2 was fantastic). The Hell level in my eyes showed me that classic gameplay can still be done right, that environements can be abstract without being retarded or frustrating, that conventional boss fights aren't bad boss fights, and that you can have more than two fun weapons in a game. (I still can't get over how incredibly bad-**** that one level was... I'm just left to wonder... Why only there? Why? Why couldn't Hell have been at least 50% of the game, with the other 50% to explain the story and make you appreciate the hell action more?)
I might've liked Far Cry had who you played been less realistic (some sort of neat vision goggles, thermo-optic camo, more health, something...). Far Cry, to me, felt like an awesome concept that had a few fundamental flaws...
Painkiller displayed that shooting is still immense fun, but being stuck in one big room, just mindlessly killing one enemy after another, no matter how good your game plays, will eventually get boring (the level progression that Doom 3 and Duke Nukem 3D had saved them from this, you're constantly in a new room and you do have goals to complete before reaching the exit).
But as I said before, the only games I'm looking forward to now are NS2, as NS blends genres (RTS, FPS, and even somewhat RPG) and does it very, very well; and Duke Nukem Forever, which I think will take the lessons learned from Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 and combine them while adding in some unique flavor, and having the traditional one man vs. hordes of monsters gameplay. I believe that Duke Nukem Forever will stand alone with Duke Nukem 3D at the top of the genre, and NS2 will be one of the best PC games, period.
On the topic of HL2 vs. Doom 3, I... I do like HL2 better, but had Hell's gameplay been more frequent, Doom 3 would've come very close, and had they had a realistic physics engine, Doom 3 would've nearly blown HL2 out of the water (can't forget that hoverboat vs. chopper fight, though. And the G-Man's kinda cool).
I played the D3 demo, didn't finish it out of boredom. But I did get a little bored at times with HL2's story. And also, the weapon set was seriously lacking. What would be nice, is HL2 with Op4's weapon set. The laser sighted desert eagle, the SAW, an actual sniper, the teleporter gun thing. but I didn't like op4's regenerating alien electric bug thing as much as HL's hive hand. So, if someone was to whip up a weapons pack with op4's weapons + hive hand, that would rock.
I never played Far Cry, how cheap can I get for these days?

Doom 3 was pretty much the same thing over and over again...so was HL 2, though.
HL2: The vehicles were a pain in the **** to control, and no fun to use. That said, the parts of the game where you are using a vehicle were too long. The only reason I really finished the game was so that I could say I had. Physics? who cares.. The game was pretty mediocre.
doom3: many will disagree but I'll say doom 3 had much better graphics and designs than HL2. The gameplay here, too, became a chore...blahblah
Basically, I didnt particularly like either.
I'd take MGS 3 or RE 4 instead any day. Better in every aspect.
I absolutely hated HL2 up until I finally got the shotgun. But 36 shells total? Cmon. HL2 has the most pathetic weapons in a long long while. The weapons are basically carbon copies of one another but the other is somewhat stronger. I'll admit though I really really enjoyed the Follow Freeman chapter as it dripped with atmosphere but the game leading upto that seemed like Valve going LOOK AT WHAT MY ENGINE CAN DO LOL! I also must be one of the few who found the citadel chapter boring as hell. Oh look I can kill everyone in less than a second and regenerate my hp and armor 500 times. Woo.
Doom 3's weapon selection is simply awesome. It may not be unique but every weapon has a purpose and a place unlike HL2's cookie cutter shotgun sniper rifle extravaganza. The game itself did get a tad tedious at times but no more than HL2. And Ressurection of Evil brings back all the good things doom offered and made it a blast. Not to mention Super Shotgun > All
To break it down down to the nitty gritty
Graphics - It's close but I believe HL2 is the last of the current generation engines and doom 3 is genuinely next gen on par with the Unreal 3 engine
Sound - No contest Doom 3. HL2's is quite buggy at times. I actually think they use a semi scripted thing like the distant gun fire mod for DoD
Gameplay - Different strokes for different folks on this one. I hated HL2's gameplay up until Follow Freeman
Story - Doom 3's is more spelled out and HL2's is so open for interpretation I swear they just see what the community spits out and takes the best idea and uses that for the next game.
Variety - Doom 3 wins for weapons and enemies. HL2 had quite a few enemies but there was never any variation to it or real mixing. It was all the same throughout most of the chapters. Up until Follow Freeman which is again the only part of HL2 I enjoyed. Environments I'll give it to HL2 because there really isn't much you can do with a mars science facility
Physics - HL2 dur but Doom 3's ragdolls are much better than the limp noodles of HL2
Atmosphere - HL2 was hit and miss constantly but Doom 3 kept it up right until the end. Doom 3 by a hair
Personally I can't wait for Quake 4. If it's half as good as I think. It will completely dominate HL2 in everyway and finally shut people up by the limitations of the Doom 3 engine . Not to mention Quake 2 had the coolest story. Ever.

Couldn't stand it. The normal manipulator was sorta fun because it made you think. This gun was stupidly overpowered. The first time I discovered I could kill with it was cool, 5 seconds later I was bored of it. It felt like the ending to Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, except instead of having multitudes of powerful techniques and infinite energy, they just overpower only one gun and give it to you. Which sucks because I would've far prefered the shotgun, or revolver, or... Any gun that shoots, really... And yes I know you could use the energy spheres.
I didn't like the Super Duper Ultra Xtreme Manipulator. I play shooting games to shoot, damnit! >.<
Argh. So yeah. If they, say, gave you rediculous amounts of ammo for your already existing arsenal, I would've had fun being able to constantly use the crossbow and revolver. Or maybe they could've buffed up the rocket launcher for the Strider fights. Possibly throw in a new weapon that excels at all ranges. But whatever. I thought the ending in and of itself (after the retarded boss fight) was pretty sweet, but the ending gameplay sequence was horrible. =\

There was one scripted thing in FC that really, really annoyed me, though. There's this one spot where you're trying to get into a facility (as per), and there's a small lake in front of it. You can either approach it from the left, swim across, or go around the right. Going around the right looks a bit risky, although it is possible. Swimming would be a bad idea, due to lack of cover and a few guards not in your line of sight (can't snipe 'em). The left way looks the best. As much cover as going along the right, but easier to get to the guards unspotted.
So, I took the left way. It's scripted that if you do, though, a helicopter comes, and sees you no matter what. It's also kind enough to drop off some soldiers.
If you take the right way, it doesn't appear.
That still leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

That does sound pretty bad and I'm glad nothing like it ever happened to me.
However, it does raise an interesting point: had this happened in HL2, you would have killed all the soldiers effortlessly and went on your way without a second thought; in Far Cry, though, it's a jarring deviation from the norm that just looks lazy. Discuss.

Could one of you HL2 fanboys/Far Cry haters take over?
I like action games as well, but the tactical gameplay in Far Cry was still more fun. I'd take Serious Sam over CS any day, yet Far Cry was still more fun. Did anyone else notice that the Combine actually seem stupider than the grunts from HL1? And in my personal opinion they were nowhere near as cool, with their squealy death noises and lack of "THAT ALL YOU GOT?!"
Doom 3, well, the guards in that hid behind crates, which made them really hard to kill as even if their head was sticking out you could not shoot it unless you moved around the side of the crate. That's just stupid (and lazy). They don't throw grenades and they don't help each other at all. At least they have the zombie excuse; Combine troops are supposed to be the best of the best.
I don't really see how Doom 3 enters into this discussion because it really is just a tech demo. Hopefully Quake IV will make better use of the engine.
And I hadn't thought about it, but I suppose you're right when you say that Far Cry is better because it's so much harder. That game made me curse a lot more than any of the others. In HL2 I might have died about 5 times in the entire game the first time through, in Far Cry I might have died about 5 times in an autosave zone the first time through (at least until I got a grasp of the stealth tactics you need).
I think someone else said they liked RE4 and some other console game better than HL2 or Doom 3. I don't mean to offend, but how is that possible? I own RE4 and it's just... nevermind, that's off-topic.

The funniest thing about Doom 3 was that the worst of the zombie marines were smarter and more capable of defending themselves than the best the combine had to offer.
Well, you do get some really awesome night vision/thermal goggles later on. As for more health, well... that's what difficutly settings are for, right?
HL2: The vehicles were a pain in the **** to control, and no fun to use. That said, the parts of the game where you are using a vehicle were too long. The only reason I really finished the game was so that I could say I had. Physics? who cares.. The game was pretty mediocre.
doom3: many will disagree but I'll say doom 3 had much better graphics and designs than HL2. The gameplay here, too, became a chore...blahblah
Basically, I didnt particularly like either.
I'd take MGS 3 or RE 4 instead any day. Better in every aspect.
Ever.
Suckup. No, KFS will still not give you a tester spot
((j/k- I'm the one that hits him up on that.))

Well it was the lack of the experimental weapons, really. They needed -something- to match the feel of the old Gauss/Tau and the Gluon/Egon. I personally would have preferred either of those myself, but I guess they didn't really fit the story too well.
Doom3 has an amazing lighting engine that looks absolutly TERRIBLE throughout the entire game.
HL2 has a outdated and fairly crappy lighting engine that looks absolulty increadible throughout the entire game.
WTH?!?

I agree that Far Cry is my favourite of the three - maybe because it didn't have the hype, and so was more of a pleasant surprise.
However, it does raise an interesting point: had this happened in HL2, you would have killed all the soldiers effortlessly and went on your way without a second thought; in Far Cry, though, it's a jarring deviation from the norm that just looks lazy. Discuss.
You could download Fraps then use sv_cheats 1 to go to the speach without playing the entire game then press f9 to record the whole thing. Or record a demo from the console of it.

I thought the lighting in Doom 3 looked quite good, I guess I'm just easily pleased.
As for HL2 I didn't once stop and think 'great lighting' or anything like I did in Doom 3. Although lighting related I did stop and think "good shadowing" on both games.
Well ok then. =/
Could one of you HL2 fanboys/Far Cry haters take over?
HL2 was nothing but a tech demo. I'm not saying Doom 3 wasn't, but it had a bit more game to it.
