<div class="IPBDescription">You know...that medieval game thing?</div>Am just curious - who here in the NS community actually plays M&B? I'm kinda suprised that there hasn't really been a topic about it here yet - with the exception of course for the fact that this site's been dead for a year or so.

The full version price so far is still pretty low (price goes up slightly for each update until it is finished in which it will cost around $29). Currently it's at $18 but a major update is due...hmm...today at the earliest so the price will most likely go up a few bucks...so if anyone's interested then now's the time to go get it.

I haven't heard about this game before. I'll download the trial and give it a go.

Eh, I've got a copy. It's okay for an in-development game, but the framerate is crappy, especially in larger battles. Which either says it's badly coded, or only optimized for nVidia cards... oops, repeated myself.

Sitting back and playing marksman is rather nifty. Too bad most of my lackeys seem to get killed so easily, or do stupid things like have the Caravan Guards go charging in ahead of the rest of the group. So they die off first. So I only ever really have one Cav guard at a time, because they always keep dying before another Watchman is ready to be upgraded. :b

I run around with a two handed weapon and no shirt. One well timed swing and down goes a horse+rider, then another big chop to take out the rider before he can stand back up. Fun stuff.

Also, after a big battle you end up mostly red.

Well, AI is still in need of some tweeking, that's for sure. As for the framerate, that pretty much depends on what card you have. Still a beta game after all <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

It seems like a decent-ish game. It could use a bit more complexity in its 'level-design' and a few more sounds, but for a beta it doesn't seem too bad, but I do have some questions...

    1. Where do you find padded cloth armor? I've travelled all over the 'land' visiting different merchants and I can't find that particular type of armor anywhere.

    2. As interesting or exciting as it is to play...what's the point of going past level 6 anyway? To hold more prisoners, to attack 'stronger' people? There doesn't really seem to be any reason you'd need to buy the full version - especially since any kind of grand storyline seems to be missing, as far as I can tell.

    3. Is there some way to control my troops? As it stands it's just like: battle starts -> everyone runs at eachother. There doesn't seem to be any kind of strategy around at all.

    4. Why is unmounted combat completely unfeasible? Heck, if you're against 10 people they all get to swing at you at once, there's not even a point to having a shield. Realistically they'd all injure eachother, but magically they all hit you...

    5. Why are there mods for a game that's still in beta?

...it doesn't run poorly on my computer, and I've got an ati card, so maybe the problem lies elsewhere with your framerate. Then again, I've only had about 50 people running around at once, max, so maybe the threshold is above that.

I'm also using a hacked FireGL X3 (read: X800 Pro VIVO modded to a X800 XTPE, then hacked old FireGL drivers installed, so I can actually use Maya without the damn isoparm garbage bug). Might just possibly be part of the problem. That and playing at 1600x1200x32@85.

As for the padded cloth, you can occasionally get it from the armor dealer in the starting town. Random what the vendors carry each day, so check each morning. Usually shows up every couple days.

As for the reason to go for the full version, the ability to take a side in the war and attack enemy castles is pretty fun.

Attack enemy castles eh? Looks like I'll have to take another look at the game. I got bored of it a while back because there just wasn't very much content, but it looks like they have been adding to it.

Actually it's pretty fun. Very solid for a beta game, and the graphics aren't half bad. Very nice!

I still don't see a lot of changes since I originally bought it, though. I guess I should start looking at mods.

    Guys. Hear me out, PLEASE.

Wow, alright. Hold on. It's 1am. I started playing at 9pm... I have Oblivion, and I have nearly every mod for it. (My list is like, 223).

    But this game... Wow. Alright..

Okay. The graphics might not be that great. It looks like the freakin' quake 3 engine.

    Wait, come back!

Alright. Now, the physics. Yes, physics.. and animation (great animation!) more than make up for the lack of graphics.

Good god, I wish Oblivion had this combat system, I'm hooked.

I was with you nay-sayers at the beginning. This thing sat on my hard drive for three days before I got around to installing it. I played it for five minutes and was like, "This game = crap." And then, for some reason, I gave it another chance, and started playing again... wow.

It's amazing to just.. mow through a big group of enemies with a long sword.. the feeling behind swinging a weapon feels so.. solid. It's great when that one crossbow hit takes out a horse, sending it's rider tumbling off. And then you whip out a dagger and lunge for his FACE!

Or you can knock him unconscious and take him prisoner, selling him to slave traders... guys, don't pass this game up. Wow. This is pretty good, very pretty good actually. Don't let the graphics fool you.

And now, back to MnB. Seeya guys around. <3
  • SkyrageSkyrage Join Date: 2003-08-27 Member: 20249Members
    And another one is converted...

As for Oblivion...I'd like to see the game or any mod reproduce the mounted combat that M&B has.

Actually - that won't happen in this reality.
  • UltimaGeckoUltimaGecko hates endnotes Join Date: 2003-05-14 Member: 16320Members
Yea, the mounted combat is really nice, especially the way your character picks the attacking direction based on the enemy in front of you, meaning you can make one broad swing to the right and then another to the left as you quickly come upon more enemies. It really reminds me of the part in Gladiator.

It's just the fact that nothing really happens outside of combat. Sure, combat is fun and everything, but that's all there is. Now, Oblivion with Mount and Blade combat...there's something (...although MnB has the problem with fighting on foot being essentially impossible, which they should probably fix). Mounted combat ftw, though. Plus, this is the only game I've ever seen than involves charging with a couched lance, so ++ .
  • SkyrageSkyrage Join Date: 2003-08-27 Member: 20249Members
Combat on foot is only hard when you've just started playing. With some practice it becomes just as easy...well, as long as you don't rush into a horde of enemies without backup. Then you deserve to be beaten to a pulp...unless you actually happen to carry a two-handed sword or sword of war. Then you might actually take several foes down with you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I can't seem to find the mod now, but download 'Battle Size Increaser' or something like that. Evens out the odds. I just hate getting my ###### kicked when I have 80 troops and the enemy has 40, because the game only allows a fraction of them on the battlefield at a time.

Not only is it much fairer now, but you can also be more strategic. Without the mod it depends wholly on luck what troops you get, but now you KNOW that you have x amount of archers and x amount of cavalry. Makes for good battles.

    And besides, a 200vs200 group battle in the LOTR mod is so cool <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

The mod works for all your other M&B mods too.

I like being an archer, on foot. Sniping the enemy down from a distance is fun. Having lots of archer henchmen and just peppering the enemy with a hailstorm of arrows is even more fun.

So you stand there on the outskirts of your little army, the bolts are flying thick and heavy around you, and you see a rider heading for you, swinging a huge axe. You're no match for him on foot, but you don't lose your cool. You nock an arrow, take careful aim and let fly a second before he would decapitate you. Your arrow sails throw the air and implants itself in his forehead, knocking him off the horse and sending him to his makers. You sidestep the panicked horse as it gallops past you and enjoy your victory. And then you're hooked on archery.

I'm past the archery stage. I find it more enjoying planting throwing daggers and axes in enemy skulls instead <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

In fact - leather armor - throwing axes and a two-handed sword and maybe a spear or similar polearm and you've got yourself a highlander! Risky but oh so damn fun!
