i watched a few episodes of gurren lagann and didn't really like it. It seemed like they were trying too hard to set up the scenario. young kid <i>coincidentally </i>finds a powerful mecha that he <i>somehow </i>knows how to pilot right before a giant monster crashes through the roof, and <i>just happens</i>to have a loudmouthed companion who is good at fighting and <i>coincidentally </i>a cute chick falls from the sky to join them. i feel like it will be filled with 'if you believe in yourself you can do anything' and other typical shounen ideals. i'll keep watching it though since sadly its the best new anime this season and i haven't really seen enough to know where the plot is going and it may surprise me and redeem itself.

You don't watch a documentary and criticize it for its boring conformity to reality and fact: don't watch a loosely-tied together comedy sci-fi show and look for intricate technical explanation.
tl;dr? Gurren Lagann may not be for you. It appeals to me, and I consider myself a jaded and cynical anime veteran.. I like it because it escapes from the know-it-all, pseudo-intellectual, anorexic bullsh*t that seems to be so popular these days. It's easy to watch and gives me what I want. I don't always want to be fighting with my entertainment. Know what I mean?

True, for this I totaly agree. I guess I tend to analyse things to much to a point where it starts to interfeer with my amusement. After all, I've been doing support for over 10 years and doing this, you tend to start analysing just about everything. I think I should learn to turn off my brain once in a while and just absorbe like kid.
By the way Zig, how old are you ? I'm 43.
I've only started to watch (more like wanting to watch) anims for the past 2 years. I didn't realy do it before until I started to discover some shows on TV.

I'm 20. It makes a lot of sense with your background that you're analytical by nature... I suppose to enjoy something like GL you kind of have to retreat back to a childlike state for enjoyment, or something <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Watch Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo(The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) it is one of the best movies out atm. (<a href="http://animesuki.rut.org/series.php/1025.html" target="_blank">Link</a>) I throughly enjoyed it.

I would guess that most people here have a longer list than that... I'm 25, watching anime since I was 4 with Doraemon.
Would anyone recommend watching Basilisk, Trinity Blood, Beck:Mongolian Chop Squad, Gunslinger Girl or Love Hina? Or any other anime I should check out?
