I just use the default tile set. I might switch some time, but I doubt it.

Anyway, I'm considering pushing on to the magma river and effectively making two forts. One that's deep inside and set apart, and one at the front. They'll slowly grow together.

My craftdwarf just made something and the name is so long it goes off the edge of the screen. I give you:

Othsashas Sedilozorugog Rigoth, "Knotrushed the Angelic Subtle Bane of Crafting" A slate ring.

I have another strange mood, I'm a little late getting to her so she'll probably go insane.

She's in a secretive mood and is drawing pictures of an ore mine and stacks of cloth.

I have rope reed cloth and pig tail cloth available, as well as silk.
I have copper and zinc ores available.

    She isn't moving.

I haven't struck any other ore and I'm thinking she wants some other kind of ore, or perhaps a different kind of cloth. But who knows.

    Any ideas?

there's really no telling... you could try digging deeper and find some new ore...

half the time I forget a dwarf even went into a strange mood until I get the message that they go nuts =p I've probably missed out on some really good legendary dwarves because of it...
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
Yeah I've been trying to find new ore, so far I found some tin and am about to mine out some silver.

Meanwhile, a human swordsman got separated from his caravan and is in the middle of a gorilla killing spree.

The game does pause and center on the mooded wwarf, it's kind of hard to miss <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Got it, she wanted silver.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Gasisdelertunur, "The Satiny Steal Style", a silver scepter

This is a silver scepter. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is studded with silver and encircled with bands of cave spider skilk.
On the item is an image of dwarves and dwarves in silver. The dwarves are speaking with the dwarves.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

edit: I came across a disturbingly long smear of blood. Actually it was wide set of smears and spatterings until it came to a long river of blood pools ending in a rotting gorilla corpse. Don't know what killed this one, but it had apparently tried to cross the bridge... I suspect my many war dogs. (both of my trappers died and the human swordsman left)

    It was 28 tiles high.

edit2: I now have a formerly possessed carpenter carrying around a willow casket everywhere he goes.

Any ideas on how long until the next release? I've vowed not to play DF until the new version comes out.

When <a href="http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_notes.txt" target="_blank">these numbers</a> reach zero. I don't know how soon, but pretty soon. With my luck, it's like tomorrow or something. I have to study for exams, but if I get a new, awesome version of DF it's goodbye studying :T

When a dwarf makes an artifact, he will carry it for 2 years. There is no way to separate the dwarf from his item besides standard violence or death. This means if the artifact is wearable, he will always wear it. If a dwarf makes an artifact weapon or armor you may just want to draft him. On the other hand, if he makes a very HEAVY artifact (like a floodgate) he will carry it around for 2 years, making him very slow. This could lead to his death in a multitude of situations. In any case, if a dwarf is alive and the artifact he made is destroyed, he will get a powerful bad thought which will at the very least make him tantrum. Since most dwarves who make artifacts (or any masterwork item for that matter) have good stats this makes them doubly dangerous. In addition, even though there are no artifact engravings, there ARE masterwork engravings, so mining engraved areas can be hazardous for your health. The only situation where you are exempt from this is that cooks will not tantrum when a masterwork food is destroyed - for pretty apparent reasons.

For this reason, many players never engrave walls unless they are 100% sure that they'll never mine them out (for example, the supporting walls of a room). Engraving floors is safe, however, and smoothing is always safe.
Oh, and if you plan on having fun with dwarven economy, don't engrave the floors or walls in the quarters of commoners. It'll only lead to mass homelessness.

If you build a channel or a well over a masterwork engraving, the engraver will go nuts! Don't try this at home.

It's a <i>game</i> and although I'd normally attempt to justify stuff like this by saying what you get out of it is orders of magnitude greater than the effort you put in by learning to play, I think in your case that would be a justification based upon the false premise that you'd be able to figure it out.

In an attempt to get this thread back on track before it gets locked.

Has anyone found a reliable way to run water over lava?

I once tried a bridge over a lava channel but it spilled off the sides. I think a series of statues might help there but I haven't tried that yet as I haven't created any magma channels.

    Anyone have some ideas?

you can only use aqueducts to channel liquids over the river/chasm/magma
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
that's the accepted method, however an aqueduct blocks channels not in its flow direction.

If you place a bridge over a channel, you can get fluid to flow over top of it and below it, channeling that is my current problem.

    Ohmigod! The release is so close. Since yesterday <a href="http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_notes.txt" target="_blank">the upper number</a> has gone from 56 to 44! Seems that the average decreasing / day is about 10 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

at least my inner dwarf does.
