PS 2 was awesome until they added the caves, as for PS2 im hoping it can revive the PS world but the f2p model makes me nervous.

    I <strike>think</strike> hope you meant PS 1.

The f2p model makes me nervous as well. Nevertheless, I will tentatively endorse it: I think it's necessary. The one unequivocally <i>good</i> thing about f2p is that it removes the biggest barrier to entry: paying up front. This means that anyone who has any interest at all will at least try it, even if only "to see if it sucks as bad as the first one." This is exactly what PS2 needs.

Planetside 1 had many things going against it: Poor marketing on SOE's part (which they seem dedicated to making up for this time around at least) meant that it never had a strong player base to build on. At launch, it was buggy and laggy, issues that were eventually dealt with, but too late to prevent most players from leaving. A poor expansion saw more players leave. The later addition of BFRs drove even more players from the game. The steady decline of player counts never stopped, doubly dangerous to a game that offers only PvP. You can't PvP if there's no-one to PvP against.
Planetside 1 could (should?) have been a strong entry in the MMO market and have given the MMOFPS genre the momentum it needed for competitors to produce similar games. The genre could have been mainstream instead of obscure at this point. But PS1's many failings ensured that it remained marginalised, and that it left a sour aftertaste even with players who liked the game.
If you disagree, remember that sour aftertastes fade and that we're wired to be better at remembering the good times (like that awesome gal drop where your squad saved the day in the nick of time) than the bad times (all those times you spent 15 minutes guarding a hack while terminally bored). If you STILL disagree, ask yourself why you're not playing the game anymore.

Planetside 2 has to go up against that legacy. A few years ago, if you had asked me whether there would ever be a sequel to Planetside, I would've said "no way." A "spiritual successor" at most, but you don't put a failed brand on your new money earner. But SOE are going ahead anyway, and they score points for guts if nothing else.
At any rate, this brings me back to the f2p model: By lowering the barrier of entry to almost nothing (create account, download game), SOE ensures that a lot of people will at least TRY the game, despite the poor reputation of its predecessor. And I think I've explained why that's probably necessary.
So am I worried? Yes. With freemium games there's always the risk that important or borderline essential features end up locked behind pay barriers. But if it turns out that I can play it for free and have fun, that's fine. And if you can pay a modest sum every now and again and have MORE fun, I'm okay with that too. I paid monthly fees for Planetside 1 after all.

tl;dr: f2p: Desirable? Maybe not. Necessary? Probably.

Pretty happy those don't make it into the game. What would be next, wifebeaters and incest?

Hmm... I wonder if they did something more interesting with the territory resources than "if you have a territory with x in it, you'll get some amount of x per tick". Like some sort of supply lines sort of deal, where if a territory you own is isolated from the rest by the enemy, you'll only get what's in the isolated section.

I'm excited to see the difference between ps1 and ps2. Great idea for a game in theory, but hopefully it won't fall through the cracks like Huxley.

    Except Huxley was:

    1) Korean, and therefore terrible in its own way.

    2) The ######tiest name ever. Even if I *wanted* to care about the game, I don't think I could on account that I would never take any game with the name 'Huxley' seriously. You could rename Planescape: Torment to Huxley and I probably would never have played it, because that title is that unspeakably awful. You could name a game <i>You Know, I Think Hitler Was Right</i> and I would have less issues going in to a store and paying cash for it at the register than I would playing a game named 'Huxley'.

    3) Seriously, what the ######. At least the Hitler game would make me think it's being ironic and won't take itself seriously at all... that's something Monty Python would name a video game. Huxley is the kind of name of someone who dies from some awful new condition and then gets it named after them. Like "Hey, stay away from Steve, he's got Huxley's Disease. Yeah, his ###### will rot off and putrefy and leak down his pant leg any day now."

What ARE you jibbering about? Huxley wasn't a nazi sympathist.

As far as I can tell, it was him simply saying that he would rather play a nazi sympathizing game then one named Huxley, why he has such vitriolic hatred for the name, I have no clue...

    It's at about 140k views. If that's approaching 200k views, then a teenager aged 14 is approaching 20. That's <i>technically</i> true.

    Lightning tank revealed.
    <a href="http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-first-glimpse-of-lightning-tank-2759.htm" target="_blank">http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-fi...g-tank-2759.htm</a>
looks pretty sturdy, more like a light tank rather than the vaguely badger-like original
    For comparison:
    <img src="http://i50.tinypic.com/29m108l.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    tanks're big
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
To be fair, the original Lightning still looked sturdier than it was. It was a buggy, not a tank.
