It's coming
As a quick note to everyone working on maps for NS, I wanted to mention this to you: we're working on a model for the command center. This means the command center will no longer be a brush entity, but will be point entity instead.
This is being done for a few reasons:
- People get lost looking for the command center. A standard model will help people find it (especially given how important it is for both sides)
- We're probably allowing new command centers to be built by the marine team. This allows the marines to build up in a part of the map other then the marine spawn.
Sorry if this negates some of the work you guys have done, but these things happen (just ask Merks or Relic sometime). I'm not sure how, if or when we'll get this update to the NSTR2, but we'll do our best. Thanks.

What does it look like? Is it a full console with body/casing and everything? Or just a screen or something to put onto existing architecture?
Ah, well... at least it'll free up some polys in that room! I hate it when I have to make these kinds of changes to my level, but -hey- it's part of the process, and things always turn out for the better in the end.

Being able to make more than one command center is interesting, that's a strategy I know is used in a lot of RTS'es. Plus it'll probably keep the aliens from knowing exactly where to go to find the marine base every single time.
Hey, I can always resize if that's not enough room...
Now I wont have to worry about that anymore!
I can't wait to see it!
First of all, very nice idea all around! I had been talking over the idea of having a portable CC, and I'm very happy to see you guys are one step ahead!
It wont hurt me too badly. (Boy am I glad that I never got around to remodelling my CC as planned! ) I had some planned in-map CC defenses, basically to prevent level 1 rush tactics. I may still implement them and leave it up to the players to make use of them.
As others have eluded to.. it would be nice to know the ballpark we're looking at for the size of the model.
Other than that, I think it sounds great!
As for marines building a new command console...woop! I wonder if there should be a way to transport buildings around too, say using phase gate technology?
Sounds like the dev guys are geussing too...
* imagines a marine with a 'weapons factory' strapped to his back asking his commander 'where do you want this?' *

:edit: I figure I probably should've asked this sooner, but if the marines build multiple command consoles, does that mean that more than one person could be commander? Or is it just a backup in case the first one gets blown up? Multiple commanders sounds inherently messy to me..../me imagines a marine team where every marine is a commander.
but what happens to the shadows?!
Anyhow, I for one -am- concerned about the model-based Command Center... mainly worried that it won't fit into my map, texture-wise.
Heh... and I thought I was the only one worried about the model replacing my already-built CC...
I'm sure it will be wonderful though, regardless what it looks like.
Even better, have it as two models - one for the basic structure, and another for the holographic screens etc floating in the air, with rendermode set to additive or whatever.
To the mapper, it would still be one entity - but it would give the modeller a lot more leeway for interesting designs.
Hows that look, ken20banks or bozman?
Sort of - you can have multiple skins for part of a model, and these can be switched as required.
Some of the aliens in Half-Life use this for blinking eyes, such as the hound-eyes, bullsquids and icthyosaurs.
Maybe some scrolling, flickery holographic screens would be nice...
NoooOOOOooo!
ill keep my cc, no doubt !
