Rebellion against the swear filter.
<div class="IPBDescription">COME. ON.</div>I mean, we know, the swear filter is there for a reason. But there are some stupid words censored. Poo-p, Hook-er, horn-y, and hosts more. Last time I checked these forums weren't for little 6 year olds browsing for Barney. No, those words don't need to be a part of every post every three words, but sometimes they're just right to use and make a post genuine and interesting to read.
Can we <i>please</i> tone down the nazi filter?

I second this though, we are censoring words that aren't blocked out on PG movies, and we are on a forum for a "T" rated game.
yea but i think i read something about them using a generic stock swear filter that came with php or something

They made theirs custom over time.
(see, it's funny, cuz you don't know what word I just said, or if I just put in four Shift+8 thingies)
Finally, I'll be able to say ****!

An Asterix, then?
Also, I too hate the censorship, but in general, I hate language censorship anyway, not just limited to this board.
An Asterix, then?

Actually, its rated M.
<!--QuoteBegin-'6john'+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE('6john')</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->rom what i understand, it takes more work than its worth to remove words from the swear filter. i remember one of the devs or someone talking about how its all kinds of ingrained into the webcode and tough to get to and change or something. of course that couldve been a load of BS just to shut people up<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I've also run a message board , and on mine there is a section in the admin panel where you can add or remove words and the replacement word from the swear filter. So... yeah. The swear filter is freaking insane. I don't care about the whole, "This isn't a democracy" or "If you don't like it, go somewhere else" arguments, because that doesn't change the fact that the current swear filter is just plain crazy.
SAL######ER!

Take for example, if you go to a funeral, walk up to the pulpit, and start talking heatedly about how the rights of the house fly are being infringed by the availability of flyspray. If you are ejected from said function, this is not cencorship, this is moderation of a private forum. I'm sorry to have to pick such a stupid example, but I don't know how else to get this point across. These boards are the property of UWE and you have no right to post anything here at all.
Censorship is where an authoritative organisation tries to prevent ideas from getting into the public domain. We can't even come close to doing anything like that, because our small private forum does not represent even a smidgen of the zeitgeist.
Having said that, I do agree that the current swear filter is too harsh. Those of you who think it is cencorship need to go back to listening to ratm <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

QFT. phpBB is NOT hard to modify. If you can handle adding in you own custom tags (ie: recent very cool youtube tags) you are certainly smart and skilled enough to do it. *smacks forehead*
Oh wait what's that? Oh you need a satircal example to explain it? Very well...
Oh you got to try this plastic spork, it will increase you life effiency by 130%!!!
But isn't that just a plastic spork like you find at a fast food place?
Heck no! This is like the spork that Jesus used in the Last Supper! See the painting on the wall!
Ooh
Yes, it will make you have no-clip and pwn people while hovering while your eyes are closed. It's yours for the low price of $4 million!
Okay deal.
PS: Drink more Slurm!
Oh should I vote too?

...and that's x5's two cents. Bite me. (or is that next to be censored?)
chicks dig rebels!
it's thanks to radical heroes like the swear filter designer that we don't get weird kids growing up who go around schooting their schoolmates. you do your bit for society lads, be proud.
And also, no-one was ever questioning the forum owner's rights to do whatever the hell they like with the forum, they can cens- uh, moderate whatever they like. Hell, i'm pretty sure we banned the word "Bob" at some point for reasons I'm not exactly clear on...
The point is, there's a difference between demanding the swear filter be changed because we feel like being some kind of <a href="http://redwing.hutman.net/%7Emreed/warriorshtm/rebelleader.htm" target="_blank">forum revolutionaries</a>, and <i>asking</i> nicely if the mods, as reasonable human beings who are in a position to do so, could look into this.
I'd like to think we're doing the latter.
And for the record:
We do not use our own code for the swear filter.
We do not use phpbb, we use Invision Power Board.
Also, I strongly protest the recent removal of my DO NOW WANT cat picture. It was perfectly within the rules and on topic.
But guess what? Nobody can be arsed to read every single post here every day. It requires far more manpower than the moderator team can field.
Personally, I say abolish the swear filter entirely, allow swearing, and just outright ban the most foul-mouthed people. But that's just me. If you can't carry on a discussion without calling someone a festering horse ######, I can do without you.
And I have no idea where puzl's getting this 'censorship is removing things from the public domain' stuff.
<b>censorship </b> (noun)
1 a: the institution, system, or practice of <i>censoring</i> b: the actions or practices of censors; especially : <b>censorial control exercised repressively</b>
(the other definitions relate to the use of a Censor in Roman times and in Freudian psychology)
<b>censoring</b> (inflected form of the transitive verb censor)
: to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable <censor the news>; also : <b>to suppress or delete as objectionable</b> <censor out indecent passages>
You find me someone that considers poo-p objectionable, I'll find you someone who's bat[expletive] insane.
And, Underwhelmed, that's not the point; the point is that Flayra wanted to build an essentially T-rated 'family oriented' game, even if it's based off an M-rated game (your mind will tend to want to explain how a game based off an M-rated game, and R-rated movies can pass as family fun...<b>Don't question the overlord!</b>).
Oh come on, it's not like it's necessary to swear when posting.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
QFT. It is also not true that we censor the idea in the post. some words are blanked out. It isn't the end of the world.
And lolfighter, I'm surprised you support a solution that will result in bans of people who choose to speak a fouler form of the English language. I'd personally prefer to see a few asterisks in posts than an inflating ban list.
To repeat, I agree that the swear filter is overly harsh, but the basic concept of it is sound.
Another alternative would be to prevent the post until it is free of swearwords. Who would prefer that alternative?
