Ah, my apologies, it's a videogame!
<a href="http://minecraft.net/" target="_blank">http://minecraft.net/</a>
It's a blocky world, where you get to survive.
You get to craft your own tools, dig your own dwelling or build your own home, not unlike dwarf fortress.
At night the creeps come out of the darkest places and will kill you on sight.
Their wiki explains this better: <a href="http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Gameplay" target="_blank">http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Gameplay</a>
Walkthrough for payed version, currently in "alpha": <center><object width="450" height="356"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0VWnQHS-ffs"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0VWnQHS-ffs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="450" height="356"></embed></object></center>
Retales and I were playing the <a href="http://-http://minecraft.net/play.jsp" target="_blank">free (classic) online version - requires java</a>, in that version you can only build, no creatures, crafting, dying.
But some people come up with really cool stuff:

Really? I always assumed it was a computer game :S. Seeing as the free version is in the browser coded in java I kind of thought it was logical. But you might know better than me, so I guess its a videogame.
Edit: downloaded the new .exe and it works fine. It's foggy out so here's a picture of my garden.

I'm trying the free tryout now during the weekend.
I've built a small indoor farm and meadow to try and give me a reliable source of health regen (bread and ham, mmmm) but I've totally run out of coal at the momement :p
My big project right now is working out how to drown some spiders as they come out of a spawner I discovered and encased. I managed to make something that worked but the water flow wasn't carrying the string they drop out to me so I'm trying to work out a system that will successfully drown every time and still deliver the goods to me safely... it wouldn't be so difficult if the beggars couldn't swim and water seemed to stop the spawner working XD
Who needs a lava lighthouse when you have a giant stone tower visible from space?
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v366/anem0/minecraft001.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Actually you really don't need either, one of the latest patches added in a craftable compass that always points to your spawn point, though towers and lighthouses look much nicer overall.
While Survival/Alpha has less building materials (currently) than Creative/classic, building feels much more satisfying.. at least for me. That tower is not simply a tower, but inversely it represents a rather sizable underground cavern, hollowed out to hold a forest of trees.
Not only that, but Survival also has the exploration and adventure aspects.. Classic takes place in a closed cube, filled with randomly generated geometry when you begin. Survival on the other hand generates its world on the fly, as you're exploring. The filesystem it uses supports areas up to 8 times larger than the surface of the earth. You could walk for years and nothing would repeat.. and the simple art-style belies the grandeur and beauty of these worlds.
It looks like a modern office building, has an observation deck, a workshop level and the top (which goes above the clouds) is a giant glass dias you can walk on that has lava bubbling around in a massive pool inside.
The centerpiece for me is the giant glass pillar right down the core of the building from top to bottom just so sunlight can get to the single flower on the ground floor =D
Must learn more about.

Speaking of which, there is a utility to convert Dwarf Fortress levels to Minecraft!
<a href="http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=64473.msg1557713#msg1557713" target="_blank">http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?t...7713#msg1557713</a>
so if you get a bucket full of lava or water and dump it out, what happens? you get just enough fluid to fill one cube?
I wish the crafting guide at <a href="http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting" target="_blank">http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting</a> was complete. I had to intuit how to make some stuff, like glass and grilled pork.
Now I'm just wandering aimlessly trying to find some better minerals than iron. Maybe I should just dig straight down.
Anyone know what the circled crap is here? The two saddle-looking things, I found in a chest guarded by a spider spawner. I wonder if they *are* saddles and horses just aren't in the game yet? the other misc. substance I'm guessing is maybe gunpowder? what's the proper way to make that?
<a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/99279/minecraft%20junk.jpg" target="_blank">http://dl.dropbox.com/u/99279/minecraft%20junk.jpg</a>
The little black pile is gunpowder, the only way to get it that I know of is killing creepers.

Use the product carelessly, ???, profit.
a) the grey pile is gunpowder. Used for making TNT and not much else.
b) As LF mentioned, those are saddles and you can use them to ride pigs. You can't control where the pig goes sadly and it's the only animal you can currently ride. On a fun note though, it seems that skeleton monsters can ride spiders, though spider-riding skeles are rare indeed :p
I got bored of my old map so I deleted it and started a new one. Currently in the middle of building a tree tower which consists of growing trees on top of trees... I'm 4 trees high now :3
I think I might put the tree tower on hold to build a mother tree type thing: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwd0IrXpzWc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwd0IrXpzWc</a>
Oh! quick tip on doors: always put them in from the outside!
Because doors take up a whole square but bias to one side, you can stand in the mostly open area and hit things near the door side but not vica versa, this means if you put doors in from the inside monsters can hit you through it but you can't return the favour without opening the door :p
For those with redstone and no idea what to do, here's some videos that seem fairly useful...

I'm actually all out of stones here, might have to go mining...
I would like to urge anyone to give this a shot if it's still free, if not, get the classic version which is free. I give it my personal stamp of approval.
So awesome.

Gets a thumbs-up from me because:
A: It's gives this newb some ideas and
B: Because it's uses the music from Inception. (I LOOOOVED Inception!)

You can play creative safely in multiplayer though :p

Anyone want to get some multiplayer action going?
Interesting concept but I'm not touching it with a ten foot stick.

Try running the linux java version. It might work for you.

Tried running a .jar version and an exe version, both do the same thing.
It either crashes the display driver, or crashes the display driver which then causes the entire computer to crash.
