I'm playing a game on hardcore mode. If you die *once*, it deletes the world. It totally changes the game. Survival trumps everything. Building a full set of iron armour is one of the first things I did. Combat is incredibly tense, given the stakes. Venturing into the Nether is truly horrifying. I have to somehow kill a Blaze before I can start playing with brewing, that's an almost impossible prospect.
Combat already terrifies me in Minecraft because having a spider land on my head/a skeleton shoot me from just outside my field of view/etc makes my heart jump up into my throat.

It's indeed a fair review, but lacking some insights as to what Minecraft actually is. It's more of a game of nerves. Sure combat can be boring on the surface and they aren't exactly the brightest with their pre-Doom AI. But down below in the depth of the earth without maneuvering room (much less AI exploitation), lacking light and perhaps ammo for your bow. Then come back and say combat is boring...
The other points are indeed obvious (maybe too obvious), but that doesn't mean the game is no fun... I mean I'm certainly enjoying Minecraft for what it is. A sandbox environment, which is mostly way too much freedom for some to handle (in this case the reviewer :P)
Pathfinding, NPC AI (or lack off) and more thrilling AI of mobs would indeed be a good thing to add to the game... Also there is only so much random generation can do, dungeons, strongholds and mineshafts seem lacking. But are probably still fun (haven't seen them as of yet, well I found a mineshaft I think...)
Heck I could even go on about Fallout 3 (which I like) lacking AI and depth if you really think about it, I mean ALL games are exploitable in some form. Unless it's a MMORPG with auto-aim mobs and such :P
