This underwater city I'm sure was not actually built by hand (but by a level editor). It took me a good hour just to make a small glass room under water, and I started from inside an island and dug out. It's pretty cool to look at from above the water though because you can see the torch lighting up the area under water through the glass.
I have a dream of one day making a whole underwater city, safe from monsters, etc... Would be fun. :)

We Dutch usually seal off entire areas to keep out the water so we can build stuff like towns and other useful areas. Submerging those areas to cover a prepared underwater city under water could be an option (something we Dutch might do some day when the polar icecaps melt <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/biggrin.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />). That is if water would listen to the laws of physics more, but then again that would probably be asking to much what with Java involved <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/tongue.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
So:
1. Seal of an area, and pump out the water (sealing it entirely with sand or something) 2. Hollow it out 3. Build your town 4. Flood area 5. ? 6. Profit?
Or use a level editor <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/shifty.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Yah, if you wanted to do something like this with out the editor I think the answer would be sealing off a large area, building your item, then flooding it.
i dont really know how stlll springs work when stacked together w/r/t flooding areas (in survivor), I have no idea how you'd go about flooding a 50 block high chasm liek that \o\

There are even some tricks with bit arrays Java can do that blow just about every other programming language out of the water in terms of speed. Sure, they're only useful under very specific circumstances, but they're there... I just wish I could remember what they were, that'd make this anecdote a lot better. The main issue with Java has always been startup time. Sit around. Wait for your virtual machine to get itself "booted" and sorted out. Ladeedaa. Make a cup of coffee while you're at it. That's what the icon means, presumably. It's one of the reasons Flash won out over Java in web games. Try to imagine programming minecraft in Flash. Not pretty.

It is very, very time consuming.
Because you have to build up to the roof and all the while you're doing it you're running out of air and moving very slowly and in the dark.
Craftable deteriorating-with-use SCUBA gear would be lovely.

Build a floor over it, flood the floor, then remove the floor.
Might not be totally accurate but it'll give you a huge ocean (that may be extremely hard to swim in but surely that's a bonus).
It'll constantly flow downwards below the surface, but I think if you take spring blocks from the surface and place one on each z-level of the "ocean" it'll immediately propagate through that level and turn it into all spring blocks. But I haven't tested this.
Fill an area with blocks (ie sand) to remove the water. Dig out the sand except edges, and build your thing. Fill the area above your building again. Replace the blocks at edge of top level with spring blocks. Dig out the rest of the blocks in top layer, and the spring in edges should fill the inner area with new springs (every empty block next to 2 springs with block below becomes a new spring). Repeat ... Profit.
IIRC, After that you have flooded the top layer, you will only have to replace one corner block with a spring, and the others will fill because of water coming from above and the corner.

I recently was told that in many cases Java is perhaps equal to if not beating C/C++ in speed because their virtual machine can make runtime optimizations. Best C and C++ can do is profiling during compile, and that's sketchy at best.
So yeah, there's plenty of nasty overhead, but the portability is nice and due to virtualization and runtime optimizations they're actually getting really fast now too.
I saw a slime, but it died in 1 hit to a diamond sword which is 1 less than I was expecting D: Was in a fully lit hallway though so I have no idea where it came from :X

DDOS on minecraft.net makes my timelapse video on mah biodome sad. I need one instance of minecraft logged in, while the other is offline (camera guy) to be able to put two local players in minecraft.
On the other hand I did discover a spider rider and music disk or records...
