I'm guessing you ended up underneath your portal room because there was a cave under it, and the algorithm used to teleport you from a portal to a free space on the other side messed up.
Ghast fireballs can be hit with swords or arrows (or even punched!) to deflect them. Fishing is in. If you die now you don't drop all your stuff; it's gone forever (may be a bug). Jack o lantern can be worn on your head...
So my adventures in The Nether have been... expensive. I spent a while digging in the real world to find enough diamond to make a pick to mine obsidian to build a gate. After I had the mats I decided I should build a Cheyenne Mountain to house the portal. My initial plan was to build a Stargate Command replica, with a gate, control and briefing rooms. I gave up on that after I realised how much work it would be. Instead I made an underground inverted pyramid and put the gate at the bottom.
I got geared up with everything I could concievably need through the portal (A full suit of armour, bow and arrows, mining picks, swords, flint and tinder, ...) and stepped through. OH GOD WHAT IS THAT SOUND ARARHGARGH.
I got into a battle with some Ghasts, I shot a few of them down but an errant arrow hit one of the pigmen. A croud of five of them turned around and bolted towards me. I was overwhelmed. Goodbye, only diamond pick ever.
After a few futile attempts at retrieving my gear, I decided to adopt a "if I can't afford to lose it, don't take it through"-approach. A few suicide runs left me with a cobblestone shell built around the hell end of the gate. I went exploring a few times and found some glowy ore. Took it back home but I couldn't smelt it.
i hear you craft the glowy ore 3x3 in a workbench to make a placeable glowy block, i also hear the game is riddled with bugs and havent bothered trying the update yet ;p

Thank god I finished the biodome timelapse, before this patch!!! Running two instances of Minecraft and the server would actually work. But with this new update... As soon as it turns day on the server makes everything lag like hell... now onto the processing of the video, it does have a small treat inside for those who can spot it XD

Haha, trick or treating in Minecraft, in my Halloween special!!!

And finally the Biodome Timelapse, it is done. Well the dome is done...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFbDZz6VKCQ

ugh is it just me or is the game much harder now? can't go 2 feet without running into monsters underground. can't survive long enough in caves to find any diamond to make any picks to harvest any obsidian to see hell...

That IS really good. Music selection fits like a glove, too. Only criticism is that final remark - it seems ham-fisted. Replace the final text screen with something else (like cool stats about how long this took to plan/build, how many materials you used, whatever, and the video is now diamonds.
I did see him :O . Oh an that video was amazingly great.
A question to all you of you:
Have you ever managed to enter and exit the Nether from the same, self built gate? I built my gate on top of a mountain, but when I exit the Nether through the same gate I came in, I end up on sea level about a minutes walk from the original gate. If I break the sea level gate and swing by the Nether again, it'll just spawn a new gate right next to the broken one.
Perhaps... When I first went through the gate, the generated Nether world didn't have a valid place for a gate in the corresponding spot (there is a magma-ocean nearby), so it placed one as close as possible. Instead of 'aligning the worlds' and taking me directly back to the gate I entered, it calculates a new corresponding location of the Nether gate in the normal world. Maybe?

The update got "scarier depths". That mean, the further down you are, the lighter it needs to be to make monsters not spawn. I do not know exactly how light it has to be at bedrock layer, but I think I actually had mobs spawn ontop a block with light level 10 (torch is light level 14, every block away it decreases by one, so if I got a torch every second block, all 3 blocks up from floor, the floor block inbetween 2 torches is light level 10) in one of my horizontal mines.
Was a hell to kill it, as it was a skeleton and I tried to use my sword... In a horizontal mine you cant dodge arrows as they are 1 block wide.
Another time I entered a room just to see a creeper jump into my face and blow up...
EDIT: Anyone know how light it has to be to be safe at bedrock?

made my portal in a sand wall in the desert. looked pretty cool. when I portal back to the surface, the exit portal is... on top of my house. Interesting.
What is the secret to killing ghasts? I have not successfully shot one of their fireballs back at them yet. How am I supposed to harvest fancy light crystals with giant tentacle monsters raping me? -_-

I've never been able to kill a ghast by shooting a fireball back at them. I'd imagine you have to hit them with quite a few, since the fireball doesn't do all that much damage. The only way I've seen one die is when they've killed themselves in magma, either by flying into a magma "pillar" or landing into the magma ocean.
It is also usefull to make closed rooms around stuff in the nether. Such as closing in your portal so you can survive exiting it (and reach it later on without having to bridge huge amount of empty air caused by fireballs). Would probably also help for harvesting the fancy light crystals.
Also, noone told me that the nether had an ambient sound of screams and cries! I freaked out when I exit portal first time, thinking I had like 10 ghasts around me screaming at same time! Still freaks me out sometimes, as parts of the ambient screams is very much alike how ghasts sound when they shoot fireballs.
Also, why does the nether create portals with corners, when it is not needed? that is like an infinite obsidian source. And so is the fact that it creates portals in normal world anyway. I wish they just forced it into position, turning the nearby area in a 5*5*5 cube intp empty blocks (portal floor in ground, and 1 block empty space above its roof level). Or maybe use the same system it use now to place the nether portal, but instead of placing a portal there, it creates a tunnel to that position from the portal position where a portal should be. If it tries to force itself partly into a pos occupied by another portal (or the immediate vincinity), it should just link to that portal instead.

The Ghast reminds me of the Cacodemon. Come to think of it, wouldn't be cool if he also shot something else besides fireballs? Think Doom's Final boss!
I was watching a minecraft stream the other day and the guy was playing ghastslayer by "catching" them with the fishing rod, reeling them in, and then beating on them with a steel sword. They're not that tough, only takes 2 hits.

Music selection fits like a glove, too. Only criticism is that final remark - it seems ham-fisted. Replace the final text screen with something else (like cool stats about how long this took to plan/build, how many materials you used, whatever, and the video is now diamonds.

I'll have a look at getting stats for it... How I'm not sure yet. There is a small stats thingy on the lowerright corner of the vid for the time window of how long the recording actually was. Maybe I need to count the blocks

Indeed, Seatbelts - Too Good Too Bad (Cowboy Bebop OST)
Kinda wish it'd just spawn it anyway, as long as it's not literally submerged in lava you can just dig or build yourself free.
EDIT: I spawned in woodlands with a surface lava stream. After I found enough iron for a bucket, well...

edit: awesome biodome timelapse =p that's dedication!

EDIT: Anyone know how light it has to be to be safe at bedrock?

this is what endless expanses of the team liquid minecraft server looked like today ;p
made my portal in a sand wall in the desert. looked pretty cool. when I portal back to the surface, the exit portal is... on top of my house. Interesting.
What is the secret to killing ghasts? I have not successfully shot one of their fireballs back at them yet. How am I supposed to harvest fancy light crystals with giant tentacle monsters raping me? -_-
This is one of those eternal questions, that man has asked since the dawn of time...
