No you haven't. The two oldest NS clans are EC and egc and you were in neither. I don't even understand why you'd make that up in this instance, those clans were more of a social thing, and weren't very good at NS. Most of the members who were good moved on to other groups once the comp scene got going.
Anyway.
I was going to go further through this thread but the level of unpleasantness was more than I was willing to deal with. So if I see one more flame post added to this thread, it gets closed and that person gets a 3 day ban. Hooray!
On the immersion topic, I already said it but the main immersion breaker for me is the GUI, specially text display. For example the "need commander" ad and the "+5" score pop-up. The reason why these break immersion is that they are drawn on a 2D layer on top of the 3D world, instead of inside the world itself, they focus your attention on something else than the game world, breaking the illusion.
In contrast to that, umbra transparency level doesn't has anything to do with immersion, transparent of not, it's still drawn inside the game. You can't break the illusion by having a transparent umbra.
tl;dr: effect obscuring vision level has nothing to do with immersion. Text GUI does.

My biggest immersion issue is that skulks seem to have their eyes inside the mouth, but judging by the model they look rather more like a dog.
This is how a skulk <i>ought</i> to look: <img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QJDOQQGmSDU/TL_Pc5lmHWI/AAAAAAAAESw/rW0uHxKuyQU/s1600/Beetlejuice%2024%20-%20Barbara%20makes%20a%20scary%20face.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
You'll have to forgive us westerners, the stars of the AUS scene did not really make a huge impact over here because their scene was not as widely broadcast to our shores.
And without wanting to take sides, even though I'm really tempted to - reporting someone to vac is asinine. Valve do not and never have banned anyone based on cheat reports, because you'd need a staff of thousands to deal with all the morons. You can report people to vac, but it is an automated system and people are not banned unless detected Perhaps you should find the alleged speedhack, and report THAT to vac.
It used to be possible to go faster than NS1's bunnyhopping using the wallhop in NS2, I don't know when this cheat accusation actually took place.

I think that it is clear that Umba's greatest strength is the ability to obscure marine vision. Which is crazy for an ability designed to be damage reduction.
Some things in the game just don't make any sense.

Anyway, VAC doesn't take user reports and that's a documented fact, there's not even anywhere you can report users. I was doing standard 10-11 speed 'walljumping' - how this got called out as faster than bhop celerity and speedhacking is still always going to be a mystery to me. I'm not an especially good walljumper either. To get to the bottom of it, i asked him ingame if i was teleporting (network issues perhaps), to which he replied no. No IP or phasegate pushback was used, nor any known exploit. He did say he was then recording it, which i would personally love to see.
And yea, agree with Yuuki. Those banners that popup can sometimes coincidentally block vision. Waypoints tend to vision block as well although less than they used to - an option to turn them off would be nice. When you get people doing even small things like changing crosshairs to allow them to shoot better, there really shouldn't be any reason to force alot of the 2d visual clutter that can occur.
*basically, i'm trying to ref a bit for the aus ensl division and don't exactly want this hanging around my head. No flamebaiting intended and i regret bringing it up in the first place.
edit: I don't think the problem visual obscuring problem is THAT bad. It would be nice if things were toned down a little bit though. There's no reason it needs to be the level that it is at the moment

You're not being punished anymore so than any other FPS. It's common knowledge to anyone that plays games that if they want to play to win they turn the settings to minimum if they want to play to have fun/be immersed they play on high.

I wouldnt say the screenshot is exagerated, I compared them the same way, which was shooting 2 umbras directly in front of me. While that may not always be reflective of how you see it, it hardly represents the worst it can be, and is IMO a decent comparison of the effects.
Its more to point out that the effect is more visually imparing than needed.

Because the message wasn't "Umbra really blocks a lot of your vision, let's talk about it", it was a demand that anything that blocks your vision is crap and that we should have some sort of revolution over it, and it got as stupid as complaining about NUTRIENT MIST. The thread then proceeded to leap to ever-increasing amounts of ridiculous arguments: people who don't mind it got compared to CoD Kiddies, complaining about how competition is more important came out, and by that point this thread had completely jumped the shark. All of this was interspersed with 6 pages of on-and-off internet d**k-waving. I lost interest when Mouse removed my video.
Thanks for sharing that video Elodea. I agree there is a plenty of room for improvements there and I'm glad to see that you brought it up. Sadly I'm not to participate in the discussions because it seems all points have been made, the thread is simply going in circles.

Now if only we had an option in game that addressed the issue of overly immersive graphics and not enough competitive play level graphics... Oh wait we do it's called graphics settings!
i just watched the OP video multiple times and i think the visibility is just fine. i mean what i can see i can shoot, so yeah the gorge as example isnt clearly visible, but far from "hidden" or "unseeable" so i dont understand what the fuzz is about.
that said i wouldnt mind umbra beeing more transparent or jetpacksmoke for that matter. to be thorough here my opinion on the rest: mist isnt high enough to hide any aliens; spores and ink are doing what they are designd to do; spit and bilebombs obstruction is also by design;
i might have missed some vision impairing effects, thats simply because i dont see them as something bad.

Yeah just bumped my settings up to see how bad it was, this picture is just troll material :(
*BLUSH* Sarcasm detector seems broken.

I know. But the fact that it is common doesn't mean it has to be that way.
Its more to point out that the effect is more visually imparing than needed.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't remember him. As you know, I kinda dropped off the radar after a couple of years and I wasn't sure if he had just shown up late. Part of me can't help but wonder if he just picked an obscure region to pretend to have dominated.
EDIT: Hang on, was that region even a thing? I remember Aus vs NZ matches starting to crop up after a while, but I certainly don't remember hearing about Asia and Oceania forming a single ladder...

I think those teams played in AusNS for the lack of other options.
I'm from NA and while I didn't exactly follow the AusNZ scene closely, I've never heard of this guy. Reminds me of grizzly, trying to puff up his e-cred.
I do remember FeX though.

He / you people might have a point, but I honestly don't care.
Sadly I'm not to participate in the discussions because it seems all points have been made, the thread is simply going in circles.
Even though few do not agree with the issue shown in the video - their arguments simply fall flat compared to constructive feedback already given in this thread.
I could easily say the opposite. The other arguments don't work because of the sheer amount of hyperbole, rhetoric, and ****tiness in this thread.
Constructive feedback in this thread? Don't make me laugh.
Now if only we had an option in game that addressed the issue of overly immersive graphics and not enough competitive play level graphics... Oh wait we do it's called graphics settings!
i mean what i can see i can shoot, so yeah the gorge as example isnt clearly visible, but far from "hidden" or "unseeable" so i dont understand what the fuzz is about.
that said i wouldnt mind umbra beeing more transparent or jetpacksmoke for that matter.
to be thorough here my opinion on the rest:
mist isnt high enough to hide any aliens; spores and ink are doing what they are designd to do; spit and bilebombs obstruction is also by design;
i might have missed some vision impairing effects, thats simply because i dont see them as something bad.
