O.K., THis isn't much of a story, but it sure as hell was scary. I was playing on NS_Caged (or was it Nancy) (I believe, the one with the Bar readyroom . .). Flayra was commanding the marines, and I was a grunt along with 4 or 5 other teammates. Well, we were in the late-mid game, and we had pretty good technology, just about everything but jet packs. So were running out of resources in the base after a few faield attempts to take hives, mostly because any tiem we'd attack, we'd find the "crawl space" in front of the "mess hall" under attack. SO we move out and re-secure the crawl space after respawning and rebuild. We end up with 2 sentry turrets and a siege turret just out of the crawl space, but with visibility into the crawlspace from the mess hall. To give you an idea of what kind of room the crawl space is, I need to describe it a bit. There is a resource node in the middle. There are two vents in the ceiling, which bend at Ls before emptying. There is a hole in the floor which an player can crawl through which is about 10 seconds from a hive at bob speed. There is a wide openign at the end of the room with twin ladders which is about 15 seconds from another hive at bob speed (consider it the unit of measureing from now on), and fianlly, the back, which opens into the mess hall, is linked to a hive by about 20 seconds. In other words, its a Junction between three hives in front of the marien base, and very hard to defend. So us 5 marines are just chillin and buildign turrets for flay when 2 bobs and a flyer come in, the flyer is in the vent above me. We blast the bobs with the help of the turrets but the flyer skitters off to heal. Well, flay decides it's time for action. He sends my four teammates off up the laddes r to take out a hive, the one thats about 15 bob seconds away ( or about 30-35 human seconds). He tells me to stay put and defend the crawl space. Plopping down a pack or 2 of health and a welder (for reparing turrets), and a shotty, (he wants to make sure I can hold this place), I assume he scrolls off to orchestrate the hive attack. Well, I never like the idea of chilling alone, but hey, if flay's dependign on me, Im not gonna let him down. Well, sure enough, the flyer that skittered away pops his little head out of the vent and begins to spike a turret. I rush over and pump 2 shells up into the vent, but he flies out of sight before hand. Next, a bob skitters i nthrough the mess hall and is blasted by the siege turret. Well, I feel pretty relieved here, my only concern is blasting the level 3 that occasionally pops out (curse his hide). Well, next thign I know, my 4 attacking teammates are killed off attackign the hive. We had only one infantry gate. That means 1 respawn every 20 seconds. Well, its gonna be 80 seconds before I'm getting any help here. The aliens evidently see the marines in their weakend condition and attack. I finalyy peg the flyer in the vent (he was too slow this time), I run back to the armory to refill my shotty. I then hear the click click of the ladder and think "Is it a team mate?" I get up and head on over to the ladder and thud, a level 4 with a level 3 by him drop down and stare me in the face. I rush back to the resource tower to use it as cover, pumping shotgun shells back towards him as he flings acid rockets at me through his orange cloud of umbra. No use wastign ammo, I grab one of those unused health packs and begin to refill my shotty at the armory (I hadnt finished). The level 4 takes delight and proceeds to pump rockets into our beloved base, the turrets (all but useless due to umbra) falling first. As I coruch behidn the armory, hoping he forgot about me, the level 3 flies over head. Whirling my shotgun up, I blast him as he bites me, but redemption (which returns a near dead alien to the hvie automatically) saves the sonofabitch. Well, my location is givin up. Finally, soem help arrives. Flay drops a Grenade launcher in front of the armory. I rush aroudn, grab it , run back behind the armory lauchning the 4 grenades that coem with it at that foul level 4 as I duck. I refill and proceed to lob Grenades from behidn the armory. Well, the level 4 has finished destroying our bakcup CC here, as well as our turret factory and resource tower, all thats left is my armory. Evidently the level 4 has had enough. The flurry of acid rockets stop and I hear him stomp toward the armory. Grabbing 2 more grenades, I run hell for leather toward the mess hall lobbing grenades. The level 4 whirls around and blasts me to smithereens in 3 well aimed acid rockets. But he's in a bad way. As my screen turns, I see a beautiful sight. From the far door in the mess hall steps my four teammates, fully packed with grenade lauchers and Heavy Machine Guns. Ah . .the cavalry has arrives. As my screen faded to black, I consoled myself with the knowledge that the cruel ####### who destroyed our auxillary base and me was about to meet just retribution. Ah .. marines are so great. . .
It sounds like those health pack where on the ground for a while.. is there a time limit on how long something droped by the commander lasts? It would be done to drop a nuke gun then have it disappear before anyone could get it.

At the moment (STC!!!<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->, health packs last for ever (as far as I can tell), as does ammo. However, weapons disspear after 30 seconds ish.
great story <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

humbabaThat Exciting Tales From the Frontline GuyJoin Date: 2002-01-25Member: 86Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Well, building health depends really a lot on the building. No building will take more than 45 nice easy seconds to kill. Soem take as little as 4 or 5 good bites. The crucial thing about a base is that turrets are a necessity, or your buildings will be toast. Without a marien that is. Its not hard to take out an average structure, provided its standing all alone with no marines to repair it or turrets to defend it.
As for turrets, they are worth it against anythign but a level 4, which can Umbra (which protects it form turrets).
what about turrets? They seem to be everywhere in your stories, but they seem to be annihilated everytime a alien starts yelling at them.... are they worth anything at all?
question: Umbra whats that? and err another one: do different turrets inflict different kinds of damage to aliens? and how much shots (seconds if its MG) can for example a bob survive? <!--emo&:siege:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/siege.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':siege:'><!--endemo--> + <!--emo&:bob:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/bob.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bob:'><!--endemo--> = SPLASH!! i know ok

"So, I was walking down the hallway when I came across..."
"No, you weren't."
"Yes, I was, now, anyways, I was walking down this really narrow hallway, the walls rising high on either side, crowding me in..."
"You couldn't have. You're not even in the playtest."
"OK, fine, it happened to someone else. It just sounds better if I tell it form the first-person point of view. Anyways, the hallway seemed to stretch on into eternity, although I realize it couldn't have been more than a 15-second walk."
"If it wasn't you, then who are you talking about?"
"That's not important. Now, every shadow seemed to be moving towards me, and everything looked like an alien in my peripheral vision. I must have swiveled my gun and stopped, frozen, about 20 times during that walk. I never knew where the next attack was coming from, and I was isolated from the rest of my squad."
"Well, who were 'your' teammates, then?"
"They aren't in the story, now, are they? Anyhow, I was relying on my commander to guide me safely out-"
"Who was your commander?"
"THAT DOESN'T MATTER! Now, do you want to hear the story, or not?"
"Sure, what happened next?"
"A bunch of aliens came, and I shot a bunch of them, and ran away."
"You're storytelling skills suck."
"Yeah, well, YOU suck."
"No, you suck!"
"No, YOU suck."
"You suck even more."
"No, you do."

lemme rephrase that: Could we get a SERIOUS story (I would prefer if we could get it from the playtesters:D) Or could you give us the mod instead? maybe one of each? <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
Or (and this one is really, really cool), you could spin in a circle until you fall over from dizziness, thusly preventing you from asking for more stories over and over.
Plz stop asking ppl, before MonsE end up doing something drastic. (like pulling all your IPs out of the web server and then hunting down as many of you as he can) Everyone on the dev team realizes there is a demand for stories, but right now the can't have the supply meet that demand without cutting down in some other area, wait until a PT has a 30 min to spare.
