Marine heroics = TEH FAIL!!! Ahem . . my story.
It was a small game on NS_Bast. Some point last weekend. At the time, I had just played an alien game and we had been pounded by marine Might. I wanted to be on the dishing out side of that battle, so I joiend marines for this game. As the countdown to game start rolled, I asked "Who's commanding?". Nobody answered. "Fine . . I will". I ran to the lift, typing "EVERYONE TO THE DOUBLE NODE NOW!" "DOUBLE TIME!!". I reached the foot of the lift and noticed TommyD already en route to the console. Fine, I thought, he can take comm, less stress for meh. I watched as marine kill messages rolled in. Two conclusions can be drawn from this. 1. The double node is secure. 2. The aliens are in Water hive, a 8 second walk from the double node. Figuring that it would be impossible to hold a room so close to an alien hive (and therefore, spawn, and still feeling commander-y, I yelled "Back . . .Ignore double node. Not worth the trouble." Tommy D and the marines decided they wanted double node, so I packed up and headed out to engine telling my commander that I'd scout it out for him. Stepping into the airlock, I felt my instincts warn me that a lone marine is a dead marine. With any luck though . . the aliens would be too busy fighting around the double node and water hive. I stepped out of the airlock and cautiously worked my way into the engine hive. Finding it empty, I requested a T-Fac and few turrets. My commander met my requests and I was soon reinforced by 2 teammates. We set up and fortified the hive room quickly. My teammates headed off in a disorganized manner and . .as I stood in the Engine hive, TommyD warned that he had to go and left the CC. Crap. Before i know it, my teammates are requesting health. "Lemme get to the CC!" I say. Running back to the airlock, I leap in and pull the lever. Twisting into the marien base, I run to the lift and get in the command chair. First priority, ensure the security of the Engine hive. "Guys" I type "Get to the engine hive, regroup there". Over an indeterminate amount of time, I eventually set up a small base of operations in the engien hive ans simultaneously slowly lose my old base. Due to my lack of marines under my command, I have only 3 nodes under my control. Realising that there is no room for bells and whistles and attempts to secure nodes will be met with swift attacks from lvl 4s (which my mariens arent equipped to handle), I ignore the upper portion of the tech tree. Instead, I get an observatory, upgrade myarmory, research motion tracking, and place a phase gate in the middle of the hive. We are now set to go romping. I drop one of my mariens an HMG and tell them to both head off to refinery. Already, we are off to a bad start. My marines initally split up, each taking a seperate route to the Refinery hive. I had a certain "loner" marine on my team (who will remain unnamed) who had a tendency to do his own thing. BAH! Eventually, they reached the refinery hive. Blasting through a few turrets with the assistance of health and ammo from above, they got to the middle of the hive room, where Mr. Independant marine (We'll call him . . .Mr.C) tells my men to fire on the hive. I had intended to kill it with turrets . . . but . . .fine. I drop a glut of ammo and health and watch as my Marines Unleash a roar of Gunfire onto the hive. It winces and twitches. With a satisfying "POP!", the hive dies. Just as they finish killing the hive, a Fade rampages up the ramp. Flinging acid rockets, he kills both LMG marines before my HMGer kills him. My HMGer is all alone in the hive. To be continued . . .
You know, everytime I've read Humbaba's stories, I've been able to hold off and wait for the next installment. But, then again, he hasn't broken up a commander's POV before.
I certainly hope Hum was able to lead his team to victory...

I wont tell you which "C" it was . . . . cept it wasn't Chumbaba. Continued now from the previous page.
You will recall that I had set up a phase gate in the Engine hive among all the base structures. I placed another down in the middle of the refinery hive (a foolish place . .come to think of it) and a turret factory +4 or 5 turrets. Upon completion of the phase gate, the two marines who had respawned after dying in the refinery phased back in and helped set up shop. I had about 100 rps at this point. ::Go back through the phase gate to Engine now:: I say They all step through and I drop Heavy MAchine guns for the two marines without HMGs. Fully equipped, I send my men off to water. They storm out of the engine hive and march down through the atrium, down a lift, through a hall, down the tram tunnel, and finally . . they reach the Water hive. All they have to do is climb a ladder into it. They file up, one by one. One marine reaches the top and is met with the jaws of a skulk. I watch as the other 2 reach the top and take opposite points in the hive room so that they can cover each other's backs. They open fire on the hive and eliminate it quickly with their twin streams of bullets. I drop a whole bunch health on a narrow even strip of ground and then scroll back to base to see what the recently respawned marine is up to. Well . . they have no hives. This is good. You'd think that my marine's would be happy with me, yes? We have both of the other hives connected by phasegates, making them nearly impenetrable. In a breif moment of arrogance, I order all my mariens to seek and destroy. As they travel . . a certain Mr.C requests "Can I get some Heavy armor". Hah . . . come off it. Like im gonna spend 5 minutes climbing to that echelon of the tech tree, considering I hold so few nodes. Is he honestly afraid of a lone Gorge? They fan out across the map. In the mean time, me and Mr.C are having a heated argument about why I should have pursued higher technology throughout the game. This makes me mad! DId I not use phase gates tactically (something few commanders utilise)? Did I not secure both hives? Wasn't I the one to step into the command chair when tommy D left! UNGRATEFUL! INSUBORDINATE MARINE!!! My anger getting the better of me as I try to explain WHY I saved resources to invest in securing hives rather than securing tech. When I command, I go for results. Mr.C tells me that he wants to have fun. NO FUN FOR YOU!!! Im pretty frustrated now. All of my marines have yet to track down this single builder alien. Scrolling from hive to hive, I hear the sounds of gestating in the Water hive. "HE's in water!!! get to water". Mr.C faithfulyl complains that I shouldnt rely on turrets and should have pursued upgrades. BAH! just kill the gorge and win the game!!! One of my marines reports he's outside of Water hive. He asks for help. Thinking he meant backup, I order C . . Mr.C and his fellow marine to come to his aid. "Get to water" I repeat. Mr.C is still arguing . . . The lone marien who found the Gorge is killed by spit. Before I know it, aliens are spawning and running out from water. My disorganized, argumentative, scattered marines fall rapidly to skulks, despite their HMGs. "Gather at Engine!!" I type. They spawn and . .forgetting the cardinal rule of marineitude, they rush off individually. Unable to be patient enough to wait for their comrades, they run to their deaths repeatedly. In the mean time, amongst this chaos, A lerk . unnoticed . . in the rafters is spiking my refinery base. Little by little, he is tearing it apart . .weakening it. "GATHER AT ENGINE!" I type. Finally, 2 of the marines get together at engine. Me and Mr.Cs argument still going. Understandably, my mariens are annoyed with this arguement. "All together, go through the phase gate, get to refinery!". One by one, they slide through. Before I know it . .the refinery is crawling with Skulks. Cursing Mr.C for not aiding my fellow marine at the water hive when the builder killed him, I drop a heavy machien gun for myself. Now Mr.C is complaining about how he didnt get to use an HMG enough, that he's sick of LMGs. After defending the LMG (my second favorite gun). I tell him to shutup and drop another HMG. Stepping out of the console, I tell them "Like this". Steppign through the phase gate with one teammate. I look around me. Three skulks are rampaging aroudn us. We have no more turrets left in the refinery. The phase gate is in critical condition. I run back and open fire, killing a skulk. The level 3 swoops in and tears me apart in a flurry of fangs and wing flaps as I swing my gun up to his darting body. I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!! I HAD the game. IF only my mariens had obeyed and stopped water hive rather than wandering around and arguing! DAMN THEM! I cant think clearly. Mr.C leaves the game at this point, and I have 2 mariens under my command. Thats 2 vs 5 aliens. I drop three heavy machine guns at the Engine hive. "Guys, get to engine now or die". We suit up . . well . . me and one marine do. The other marine decides not to pick up the HMG I dropped for some reason. I'm tired of arguing though. We march off to refinery. Before we can even reach it . .we are torn apart by aliens. By the next time I spawn . .there are Fades all over the place. They tear at our base in engine. After a 5 minute pitched firefight in the Engine Hive, our spawn portal dies. From the Apogee to the Nadir of power . . my marines have fallen. I have fallen. The aliens win this round.
Damn if I was running that server I would have turned on FF and teamkilled Mr.C a bunch, make him learn his lesson

Of course . .after finishing the game . .I took a step back and realized that getting into an argument with one of your soldiers over how to fight the enemy is not something you can do in any other RTS. After this game . . I saw again why I love NS so much. The experience of commanding REAL people, with all their quirks and personalities, is what makes this game superior to any other I have played.
LOL yeah , also if you think of it, this teaches us a lesson for the future..... NEVER Fight for a stupid thing, and DONT fight the commander, because he/she has to take care of more important issues than a cocky marine =)
Oh well, I guess it serves as a lesson to us all. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Ive slightly started to worry about llama's now, I always underestimate peoples potential for bad behaviour and it hadnt occured to me that someone would try and be a backseat commander. You should have just let him be the commander and when he loses he couldnt blame you as much. Of course, this doesnt mean that I agree with you airing your dirty linen in public but Im hoping that the letter C was just a smoke screen so wed never know who it was. /me strolls around on the moral highground Id have just muted him and left him with his LMG though /me falls off
