Sorry, but this is a problem with ALL evolutions.
Let's take a look at ME playing the big bad onos in classic <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> (rarely seen)
The truth: My first encounter is always a group of HMG/SG marines which slaughter me in 5 seconds. Most of the time I kill one or two (LA) marines before I die. So from my point of view the onos is crap. It needs 3 times health and armor and gore should deal 3 times damage to be of any use for me. Same goes for many other players who die in less than 2 minutes after going onos without doing any damage (LA marines spawn with all upgrades).
You need to practice with every evolution. My favourites are skulk and fade (and gorge in classic) so I do play these most of the time but still I don't say "onos is crap, give it much more health and armor". A decent marine in combat can easily drive away a fade (eg. lvl 10 vs lvl 10). Fades in classic are a joke (they are crippled no matter what you do because they can't have all necessary upgrades).
It's not possible to balance a game for bad players (in this case the bad players are marines with bad aim). You have to spend some time to become a good player. This becomes even more important in games with different evolutions/weapons (most players can't play with every evolution/weapon at the same skill level).
PS: I don't even bother playing fade in classic because it sucks against decent marines (10vs10, by the time the fade appears you have the choice to kill their RTs or defend your second hive which just gets sieged to oblivion or shot down by HA train).
He's talking about a 10v10 pub. In which case only aggressive use of starting res and good coordination would win (4 guys drop RTs, 2 drop 2 OCs each at chokepoints, 2 save for fade, 1 for DCs and 1 for hive - Fade/Hive appears at the 5 minute mark, but at least you stand a chance to make it there).

That or as usual down-syndrome marines.
Understatement.
It's pretty hard for MARINES to lose a 10 on 10.
