    Loved:
Jetpack/HMG rush! w00t! I w1|| pwnz0r u so|2|2y 4|1umz! Ramboing actually worked! I know people hated it, but I was so damn good at it I could have taken down the entire alien empire if I had enough ammo.

Importance of Hives: Aliens used to depend on them, but now... ugh... it's a lot more like a simple deathmatch without the Hives as the absolute ultimate point of contention.

The old blink. With a little tweaking it could have been kept in, which would mean no more Scooby-Doo monster Fades, as someone put it.

The full size WoLs. They added a bit of balance when it came to the aforementioned JP/HMG rush, and when you ran around a corner into one there was a sense of "Oh... $#1+." The new towers don't have the same kind of psychological impact as the old ones.

The chamber stacking. I've got many fond memories of building the ol' tower on ns_hera.

The semi-auto Grenade Launcher. It was far more effective at clearing WoLs quickly, which is what the Launcher should do, and seemed a little less effective against aliens themselves. That's just me, though.

The old Scent of Fear - hiding in the vents of ns_nancy as the lone Marine survivor was scary and fun as hell, especially when you have teammates cheering you on (or cursing you out for extending the game) with voicechat.

Lerks with spikes=Fun... No one knew it was hitscan, quite fun back then
Fade acid rockets at 50 dmg, you can't even SCRATCH a marine now, its weak as spit.
    Edit
    Must add...
OLD WELDER EFFECT-IT really looked like a welder, not some pulse-weld gun, bring that effect back, even if you have to lower damage, it was the BEST weld effect EVER

    The almighty JP/HMG.
    The single-gorge system.
FADES! When they meant something else.
    Mines for base defense.
OMG TF IN BASE NOOB COMM EJECT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111oneeleven
    WoLs.
    22-res RTs.
The old maps. They all seemed to have a much better atmosphere.
A real sense of urgency and purpose.
When two hives really meant something.
    The anticipation surrounding NS 1.1.

    w00t my 100th post!

The Unstoppable Onos. I miss all the exploits in nancy, and I miss the old Eclipse. One thing I don't miss was the one gorge, because some morons would go gorge, and not have the slightest clue as to what they were doing, and stay on gorge. Also I like gorging and I didn't get to gorge much in 1.0-1.04.

Not so when you were the one getting piz-owned by either any rush(this on pubs, I don't give a damn if you played on an elite pub where people would make walls out of the skulks and chomp jetpackers out of their) or any of the admittedly overpowered stuff. Like acid rocket. It would work as a 3-hive weapon with the previous damage, but as a 1-hive weapon? No...
But I really liked the lerk flight, rather than point and jump you needed to learn about how it moved, and how to change direction, etc. Plus it was faster.

Oh, and the support abilities taking all of your energy, but lasting for like 10 seconds(rather than THREE).

I have to say I loved the old gorge/res system.. I mean, okay it had its obvious downsides (people going gorge when they didn't know what they were doing) But, how is that so different from someone jumping in the cc when they don't know what they are doing?
I mean, with the old system, aliens used teamwork. Not teamwork in the "Onos needs umbra" thing.. it was hardly teamwork forced by game balance as teamwork in the newer versions are. It was just generally working as a team. Keeping your team posted on what the enemy is doing. Helping the gorge and so on.
The current brand of teamwork for aliens just doesn't work in general. I mean, my previous example of an onos and umbra. Well, simply put, the onos probably won't get umbra if he needs it. Just because of res for kills. Before RFK the onos would get umbra because that lerk knows the onos is going to do more damage than he is. Pretty simple. There was no downside to not spiking/sporing/biting instead of umbra.
Now, that lerk wants more res, so he is going to try to kill instead of help his teammate who needs said umbra. That lerk wants res to go onos himself, so he ignores the person who is onos. So instead of giving umbra to his teammate, he spores the place hoping to get some cheap kills.

That having been said, I also enjoyed no RFK.
I truely believe RFK killed alien teamwork. Before if there was a lone rambo marine walking along, you may have chosen to parasite him and tell your teammates of his actions. Now, most people don't. Unless its a good number of marines they know they can't take, they will just go for the marine themself. They don't want to tell the team, they want that res for themself..
I mean, its not even something people think of. Its more a subconcious level. They just don't think about telling their team stuff anymore because it doesn't benifit themselves.

Then we have the old onos config.
I'm not sure about you, but imo the most annoying weapons in the game are devour and stomp. I really never understood what people had against paralyze. It was a finely balanced attack. Whats so bad about a non-hitscan projectile weapon with a moderately slow rof and a good bit of adren usage? I mean, compare that to stomp, which takes about the same amount of adren, can stop an entire hallway of marines and works almost instantly? Wasn't too unbalanced.
Then there was primal scream. Lets face it.. Lerks just don't have the general build to scream like that. Onos do.

Jetpacks weren't too bad. I enjoy the 3.0 jetpacks a bit better, but if the 1.04 ones weren't FPS dependant then they would have been fine.

The longer games were also a bit of an upside.. They allowed for a more memorable game in general..

Webs.. 2nd hive webs were great. Along with the lower limit.. When ever I think of webs I always seem to think of the hall in NS_Nothing, just below the generator elevator, completely covered in webbing.. In the newer versions you would be lucky to see webbing there, or anywhere.. Let alone a hall way full of them

Ah, memories. I was a 1.04 Gorge... My recrod was 20-7 before I stopped keeping track. (And that's 20 wins, homo)
I definentley vote for a 1.1, as in 1.04 with a bunch of bug fixes and other such stuff that doesn't effect gameplay that much, though it does need some balancing. 3 hour game... *drool*

    - hives being important
    - people escorting the gorge around
    - laser mines
    - Onos being the ultimate end-game
    - no stomp/devour easy killing
    - Long games
    - The first 3 minutes, SKULK RUUUSH

The main thing I loved about 1.04 pubs is that nobody knew how to position themselves yet. So you'd constantly leap into a pack of marines and take 4 or 5 of them down before being killed. With carapace of course.

On marines, I'd stand at the end of 2 corridors near Cargo in ns_nothing and keep a whole team out of that area while a friend blocks the vent going viaduct side while skulks rush you in straight lines at distance.

Early hive rushes were almost fun, but I'm glad they're a lot less common now, as a result of being much harder to pull off.

the old blink was just so cool. even as buggy as it was, it should not have been removed.
a hive meant something. however hives = 80 res so you had to protect it at all costs.
no RFK = skulks can actually mindlessly attack at marines.

    oh and what about SKUL, GORG and REIN <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The importance of hives, and the acid rockets fades had.

When you actually needed a second hive to go fade, everybody on the team tried their best to get that second hive. Now, every stupid n00b trying to get better stats to boast about just saves his res and goes fade or onos as soon as possible. The game has basically turned into TFC where everybody just does their own thing.

The acid rockets issue is self explanatory. Aliens need projectile weapons - bad. If a group of heavies is coming down a long hallway, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. In 1.04, fades would actually put up a good fight trying to stop those heavies.

    In 1.04 I was always a fade because acid rockets were just awesome. In 3.0, I'm always a gorg because fades suck now <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    GAWD,

Reading this thread i want to play 1.04 so bad. I would actually put a server up, but the CPU usage is intense. Only thing holding me back so far..
  • ShawnDShawnD Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7827Members
That and bandwidth. My download rate on Guns4Back2School often goes up to 8kB/s. T1 can only support like 12 players at that rate.

Anyways, I the bad things that people are listing like exploits, jetpacks being overwhelming and winning everytime, HMG overpowered, bunny hopping, etc... just dont post those. I wouldnt ever want to see those in NS in a million years, and I think ya'll wouldnt either. You might remember it as "fun" when it really was "lame" to /stuck through the glass, or dominate aliens every time until the comm pulled his head out of his arse and decided to do some more intresting tactics.

Oh well, good feedback so far.
