The fishing Rod can actually be used on any Mob, not only ghasts, it's just exceptionally useful with ghasts because they never normally come close enough to bat with a sword. I have pulled a few skeletons into my moat though.

Reading through the minecraft wiki, you *can't* be safe at bedrock.
Layer 8 and down, no level of light will stop things spawning. Between layer 16 and 8, you need a light level of 14 to stop spawning.
Quotin' da wiki:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->After the Halloween Update enemy mobs can spawn in higher light levels than 7 depending on the depth above bedrock. For example, Mobs will spawn at level 14 light at depths of 16 and below, which means that torches are useless, and you'll have to fill the entire place with Lava, Fire, Jack-O-Lanterns, Lightstone, or Sunlight to stop mobs from spawning. At level 8 and below, even those won't stop mobs spawning. The formula for the depth monster spawning is 16 - Layer / 8, rounded down. There are 128 layers on the map, and it is zero-based, so the lowest layer, which is entirely bedrock, is layer 0, for example. At layer 64 monsters will spawn in level 8 light, and at layer 32 monsters will spawn in level 12 light. Higher layers, like 100, would require level 3 light.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I did a heap of mining at layer 2 or so above bedrock and I didn't have any problems keeping monsters away. I might've been a bit more liberal with torches but I didn't go crazy.

Well I don't know, I don't even play the game. I'm just trying to be helpful.
And then you barge all up in here with your australianness and bring ruin on my post.
Ah, they figured out the formula now? I checked at the wiki the three first days for that info but gave up after that.
Also scythe, higher light levels lower the probability of monster spawning. This means I rarely get monsters spawning, as I have at the lowest light level 10. But sometimes I do get monsters...
So I take it we need jack o lantern flooring at bedrock, as somehow I doubt lava is a wise choice...
Also, anyone else got a shortage of cobblestone? That is something I never thought would happend, but the nether devours it (Ghasts cant break it, and I want to be safe while moving there, so I am making a vast base, maybe also making some rooms bit big compared to what I need (6*7, going down more than 10 blocks, as I want off a mountain))...

Friday patches are back I see... For now <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/biggrin.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
[edit] It seem Notch also made stuff bounce of Lava once, instead of instantly getting incinerated. I had to destroy a few things and some of them bounced back, would make it easier to get obsidian.
I think mob spawning is also affected by how much space there is. I made 1 block wide stairs right down to adminium and have not experienced any monster-spawning in my mining operations. Modest amount of torches, increasing as it goes down, but not 1 every square or anything.

That mechanic did not make it in to the update, nor was there any finalized details on exactly how it would work. That wiki post is pure speculation.
It DID make it in, however people doing research on the forums discovered there was a lower bound on the formula (they couldn't get anything to spawn in brighter than 11). It was reverted back to normal though, in last Friday's update.

b... bu... but, we have to treat that guy D:! He can only say yay, that could be lethal. What if he knows how to disarm a bomb, so the good guys (who else would plant a bomb?) cut off his arms, and then when the reinforcements arrive, they all get blown up, as when he tries to instruct them of how to disarm the bomb, all he says is "YAY!"?!? That scenario is totally likely and just waiting to happen!
