Let me start out by saying that I have never actually played 1.04. I did start with release 2, and I can also see myself missing that version. I think the biggest reason for this thread is that NS just became larger and larger over the years, and a very tight community with an emphasis on team work became watered down. Even when someone fires up a 1.04 server now, a limited amount of people will come and everything will be "just as it was".
I find NS still to be loads of fun when teams are good and teamwork "works", and less fun when that isn't the case.

I think I just posted it because it seemed to be a lineup of a lot of the things everyone thought (at the time) were wrong with 1.04 in the first place.
Kind of ironic these are now the items someone is missing. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> It wasn't intended as a review, more as an 'Oh. My. God.' kinda response.

i loved when many people went lerk, lerk was one of the best and it really showed when they brought back its bite in Ns3 b1 but when b2 came no one was using it frankly i was dissapointed
I forgot something that really made 1.04 seem much bigger a game. The 1 gorge system allowed the gorge to make impressive 'infestations', where the buildings actually served a purpose. WoL's, DC clusters just outside conflicts, MC-hive rushes (gorge puts up a hive in a locked down hive room, everyone teleports in), and random sensories (when we were nubs <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->).
Remember when fights last beyond the first rush? guys had time to get out of the room, heal at a nearby def cluster, and come back for more
Now everygorge drops ALL chambers behind the hive and let it at that. When was the last game where you had more than 3 def, mov, or sen?
<ul><li>Leap and Charge actually killing marines</li><li>Gorges that could actually stay gorge and build </li><li>Fades and Lerks fighting for control of the third hive Against HA, rather than Fades ending the game within 3 mins of gestating</li></ul>

Silent bhop was universally frowned upon.
Diablo_fx: yes, it was uncommon, but it happens. Ive seen it at front lines for gorge to get out when the going gets bad. Ive seen more than one at a hive to get 5+ fades through to a MC-Hive rush as fast as possible. I was joking about the sensory chambers, but defense chambers were clearly a good thing.

I liked the babblers plus the awesome end game rushes when the aliens won.
Even if you were a marine, it was hella cool waiting for the huge end game rush of ONOS and babblers.
Blink was great. The game felt much more fast paced and was much more intense. People responded better. 3.0 feels like you are playing with a bunch of zombies.
3.0 sucks. It just feels like blah. Everyone sort of mills around for an hour. If aliens win, they are greeted with a long boring stand off with super marines... and if marines with, they just pretty much have their way with the aliens.
A revert to 1.04 or 2.01 style would be awesome. Down with 3.0!
Oh, and ya can't forget the laser mines either! Those were always fun, even when some newbie placed them in the most useless spot.. they still made base look pretty.
And now that you've got me thinking about it I kinda miss that whole giving the gorge your res thing that happened with healspray (my memory is fuzzy) That was just pure NS then You'd have situations where you had like 50 res saved but your team needed some chambers so you gave it up for the gorge to use it to make some defs or offenses. Quite a bit of alien teamwork that was (Why do I keep feel like im missing an important part of that memory... I was never a gorge much so I didnt know much about it)
The fact that that was a metamod plugin rather than an actual part of the proper game is the major thing you're forgetting <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
what happened to NS_BAST! The game has come a long way since 1.x, its way more balanced. I remember i quit for a while as the aliens were so strong after they got 2nd hive back in the old days.
Electrification has made it a lot better aswell, least the rines can hold down some res st the start, unlike haveing to waste loads of res building an outpost at all the res nodes and then having them taken out soon as aliens get a 2nd hive.
I've noticed most if not all of the points raised here are for aliens. Except the stupid laser mines, which were useless cos u could always see them as an alien.

Since when are we "reviewing" peoples opinions on what they missed...You cant just say "No, you can't miss that because I didn't like it." You're trying to discuss balance of an old version in a thread about what you missed from it...
Anyway...I missed everything R A C said.
Sadly, now that OC's are just a pile of worthless crap, this is impossible. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Well, we know he reads them...but that doesn't mean he takes them to heart. That's not a condemnation, that's commendation; no two forum-goers will agree on an issue, and "general opinion" changes every beta.
i loved when many people went lerk, lerk was one of the best and it really showed when they brought back its bite in Ns3 b1 but when b2 came no one was using it frankly i was dissapointed
Remember when fights last beyond the first rush? guys had time to get out of the room, heal at a nearby def cluster, and come back for more
Now everygorge drops ALL chambers behind the hive and let it at that. When was the last game where you had more than 3 def, mov, or sen?
I never think i have ever seen some1 drop more then 3 mcs. I've seen dcs under hive to heal but nothing more. BTW sens spamming noob gorges who think it "rox"
old blink/ar
working jetpack
silent bhop
having fun.
Oh yes! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Now you are just listing anything thats different <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If there was ever a chamber that needed to be "spammed" it's sens. To get the best advantage out of sens chambers, they should be all over the map.

version 1.04 seems a lot more gameplay balanced to me, or at least more fun.
I'm going to try it at my home LAN..

I think that's about it
Fun maps like siege and pillbox were at their best in 1.x, with the exception of missle command which was completely marine biased.
1.x Ninjafall !!!!!!!!!!!!
Slower pace of gameplay~ No 3 minute fades to wipe out your res nodes.
Old shotty~ A fun weapon that was.
Laser mines~ I remember spamming marine start with these in 1.x eclipse. Those were the times.
Old lerk~ Bite + old flight model = best lerk.
Webs at hive 2 being crucial for a win.
The old fade, though that isn't to say that the 2.x-3.x fade isn't fun.
Not since 1.04 have i ever seen alien team work like it
Guard the the little fat gorge where people actually lay down there lifes protecting the gorge and rushed together as a team to do things like take nodes /hives down.
No res hoes
Used to like when aliens actually got 2 hives when fades scared the crap outta rines and when acid rocket was actualy usefull.
The onos pwned all in 1.04
