Splinter Cell is ace - it may be totally linear and have unsatisfying combat, but for some reason I keep coming back to it again and again to perfect my runs through each mission - no alarms, trying to not kill anybody at all, etc.
Deus Ex 2 is not the travesty many people will have you believe. If you dislike it then you're either a sheep or you're not looking at the changes properly. One type of ammo for all guns works very well, and the non-existent experience system is no great loss. Also, the person who criticised the graphics engine needs to see an optician. My only quibbles with it were that it was (a) WAY too easy and (b) WAY too short - I finished it in under eight hours.
[/Devil's advocate]
So anyway, on to the disappointments:
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow - sure, the MP is fun, but the SP game has none of the flair of the original. None of the funky locations, etc - it's like they learned a good way to do grass and outdoor locations and went wild.
MGS2 (PC version) - the controls are utterly horrifying.
Raven Shield: Athena Sword - it's got none of the flair of the full game, and feels a little superfluous.
Fallout - I know it's supposed to be a classic, but try as I might I can never get into it.

I think the problem just lies within the fact that everybody wante dit to get more diverse and confusing, where in actuality everything was streamlines and sexified; a true example of function before form.
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica. I suspected the game would be over soon in the Antarctica base, but then a bunch of retarded plot twists just made me go "Uhhh..". Plus it kept all of the awkwardness of the past RE games.
- Final Fantasy 9. I remember hearing a lot about Square "taking the Final Fantasy series back to its roots". Total BS. All they did was name certain characters after ones in FF1. This game was essentially FF8 Jr.
- Opposing Force. After the first chapters, the game turns into Half-Life, minus the HEV suit.
- Blue Shift. This was pretty good, until it ended. At least it somewhat relates to HL2 (Barney escaping Black Mesa)

The problem with DX2 is that it was a complete change from the original, which most people who played the original didn't like. Its like NWN and Baldurs Gate II, most people who have played BGII hate NWN because it was totally different. Not so much as an improvment on the original as an entirely new game concept.
Koudelka. Old PS1 game that had so much going for it...
1. It's by SNK. 2. It's dark gothic fantasy. 3. It's supposed to be kind of a blend between survival horror and an RPG. COME ON.
It turned out to have a clumsy (and ludicrously slow) battle system, and insane, pointless effects that were SUPPOSED to place viewing emphasis on the spells (which didn't look that cool). The result was an RPG pretty much everyone forgot about...

I think the reason people don't like Splinter Cell is not the lack of action, but the completely linear trial and error no deviation from the exact path the mapper wanted to take at all ever thing.
1. Enter the Matrix. Worst. Form of entertainment. Ever. Specifically, the driving levels. I left and made coffee while Niobe tried her hardest to drive the car up a wall. I came back and had eventually got to the end of the level. I think the worst level was the one where Ghost was driving. I spent soooo long on that level, always thinking "It's gotta get better sometime... It can't get worse". But no, it got worse. Then for a change of pace, it crashed a bit, then got even worse. Oh, and then it bugged up and crashed.
2. Jedi Academy. Borrowed it from a friend. Thankfully. It wasn't even worth the CDs it was recorded on. All it did was add some bloody pointless levels and the ability to have different lightsaber colors without using the console. Whoo.
that's an utter lie, you get a couple (<!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) of choices in SCPT:
(This be a spoiler)
1. When you save the french guy in the cryo lab. Save him or not? (I don't think it made a difference except the dialogue between Lambert and Fisher) 2. When you're in Israel and get in the elevator, do you kill Dahlia? (I think it gives additional snipers if you don't kill her)
Yeah it's weak, but we can hope the 3 is much less linear.
These also **** me off in SCPT:
-In that mission you get Sadono, you <i>could</i> be passing a huge path in that parking/sewage entrance/greenhouse/whatever if you actually learned how to climb through a window (which seemed logical to me) -Doors seem to misteriously jam/unjam themselves as the story unfolds.

Furthermore, the Master Chief himself is really, really cool, the physics are fun to play with, and the guns are neat. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
1) I shouldn't have to read 3 novels to enjoy a game.
2) Most horrid level design ever. I still have nightmares about the library
3) It was too crappy for me to get into the story.
Diablo 2 has to be the worst game I have ever played.
I've had to play the new Shrek 2 game because my sister is a mindless twit who can't do anything on her own.
Diablo 2 is worse.

The problem with most games with idiot-proof gameplay is that they underestimate the ingenuity of complete idiots. "HEY ITS A PLANE OMGWTHBBQ I WANT IT OOPS I CRASHED IT GG WE LOSE"
Edit: Hey I just noticed the "WT_" word filter... better that turning it to **** i suppose...

The single player didn't seem all that promising, either. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
You're kidding, right? Did you <i>play</i> the Single Player missions?!
Anyway, biggest let-down:
Star-Trek: Bridge Commander
Basiclly, the only thing you could do was decide which of four systems got the most power. And you could shoot the phasers if you wanted to.
I had more fun crashing the ship into various planets.
