In regards to character, discipline, habit, team work and skill building - most jobs will do all that. Advancement would have little appeal; I would prefer to advance in the career of my choosing.
This leaves me with travelling, healthcare and becoming fit. That's not really much incentive to join the army, especially considering the downsides.
Bottom line is that I'd never join the army. It's not what I want to do. Two years after school? I'll take using the first year to get a small job and build up some money, then the second year to go travelling, thanks. But however a person spends those two years, he should be free to do what he wants to do.
It's all good. My line of thinking is the transition time between graduation and establishing a career or starting a family would be well filled by a stint in the army. It would prepare a person for adult life unlike any training they would likely receive in the commercial world.
I think that's up to the person to decide. Again: shouldn't I choose whether it's best for me? If a person wants to take a couple of years off and join the army, or work in a charity, or go backpacking, or vegetate, then that's their decision, and not yours. I'm glad that you've gained something from your experience, but not everybody would. I certainly wouldn't.

Why does it have to be the military? Surely other government positions have similar benefits, such as police officiers, firefighters, coast guard, border patrol, etc.

back on topic.... I don't think people need to join the Milatary after highschool. just make highschool turn out better people. I mean look at America 50% of people are overwieght. high blood pressure and heart attacks are on the rise. for starters make P.E. actually work. I'm from Utah and our P.E program is terrible. I don't think sending everyone into the millatary is a good idea. some people are born soldiers, others born scientists, others born musicians... and well you get the idea.
but I agree that kids now a days just don't learn what they need to . I think we should bring back corperal punishment. I'd behave in school if it meant a beating if I didn't

There's many good reasons for serving a hitch in the U.S Armed Forces (in random order)<ul><li>It builds character and instills discipline.</li><li>You learn to work together as a team.</li><li>You will become physically fit and eat well balanced meals.</li><li>You develop some good habits (and a few bad)</li><li>You get to travel, free, often out of the country and around the world.</li><li>You get free healthcare for the duration of your tour.</li><li>You get paid to learn a skill, and YOU pick the skill.</li><li>You get to use this skill when after you are discharged</li><li>The GI Bill of Rights will pay for your education.</li><li>You have a chance to advance, and make MORE money.</li></ul>
This leaves me with travelling, healthcare and becoming fit. That's not really much incentive to join the army, especially considering the downsides.
Bottom line is that I'd never join the army. It's not what I want to do. Two years after school? I'll take using the first year to get a small job and build up some money, then the second year to go travelling, thanks. But however a person spends those two years, he should be free to do what he wants to do.

as far as defending yourselfs agaisnt a Standing army I may agree with you. Russia is not easy to invade by land. Alaxander the great and Hitler both learned that the hard way. because its A- really really really outragously big and B- really really really cold in a lot of places.

back on topic.... I don't think people need to join the Milatary after highschool. just make highschool turn out better people. I mean look at America 50% of people are overwieght. high blood pressure and heart attacks are on the rise. for starters make P.E. actually work. I'm from Utah and our P.E program is terrible. I don't know if its diffrent elsewhere in the country. but here its a joke. second of all. give kids cool swords. I mean, who wouldn't want a sword? and I think that'd help

Secondly your map is nice but you might want to familiarize yourself with basic geography because none of the areas he conquered are part of Russia, then or now.

I made one mistake ok? not a few... so just can it.
I don't think sending everyone into the millatary is a good idea. some people are born soldiers, others born scientists, others born musicians... and well you get the idea.
but I agree that kids now a days just don't learn what they need to . I think we should bring back corperal punishment. I'd behave in school if it meant a beating if I didn't
