I was just taking a guess based on the progress page and the simple fact they we got a patch on Tuesday. I really want the server optimizations more than anything. Hell, I'm willing to deal with the FT spam for a time, just to get more optimizations in. Getting more optimizations would allow more servers to run Tram smoothly. I don't know about anyone else here, but I am bloody sick of Rockdown.

I don't think we'll see some magical fix that will instantly make this game 100% smooth. It is slowly but surely improving, but I think it will be a while before things are running the way people want them to.

Like has been said, you can only have one guy working on one issue at a time. Might as well release a bit of everything at a time. But it is up to them at the end of the day.

They can't win really, people complain when there are not enough patches, and now complain when there are too many.

I was just saying the physics performance would allow more servers to run tram. That's all. I have a very good understanding of the software development process, so you're wasting your breath there (that's what I do for a living). I was complaining? All I did was express the desire for more performance related patches. I don't see how in the hell that is a complaint. Man, did someone take a dump in your cereal this morning Runteh? You really misinterpreted what I said. I fall into the "fan boy" category and will defend UW (almost) no matter what choice they make. Jeeze. Anyway, enough of this pissing match. UW will do what UW does, that's that.

I'm not talking about you mate, just some of the comments that are said on here. As for wasting my breath, I can't argue because I am an artist and designer, not a programmer. :)

I agree with you, I would like to see them prioritize client and server optimizations over anything, but that's easier said than done. I'm still happy to play the game in whatever state that it's in.

No game publisher can ever win. Someone will always have something to moan about.

A very wise reviewer once said:

Let's hope it all makes it into 162. Just my opinion, but I doubt we'll have a patch tomorrow. If we do, Physics updates won't make it in, most likely. Since 161 was released this week, I don't think we'll be doing another patch until next week.

Server optimizations are prioritized over everything. This is engine side stuff though and I'm the only engine programmer, so Charlie and Brian are working on other things.

I get the impression that people are confusing jitter caused by low server performance with client-side framerate stuff. If server tick rate is steady, even if the game only runs at 40FPS there will be a sudden and drastic drop in people complaining about optimization.

Thanks for the update Max! It's always good to hear from one of the developers. Max really needs a sidekick! Superhero costumes optional, but preferable. =P

Can we please get a fix on the lag? Im not sure what is causing. I have good ping and decent FPS. I rubberband , i freeze , i mean anything to do with lag Latency and Framerates wise , it does. Im not sure what is causing it but 161 made it a LOT worse than the last patch. If that was fixed....this would be a good beta for me until i find something new that bugs me.

Agreed, is there a downside to having it happen? Looks kinda cool anyway, almost biblical.

    "Add non-commander minimaps"

Please add a feature where you can display the room names on maps/minimaps.
Very confusing if someone tells you where to go but you have no f*cking idea where that is...

in NS1 you could get mini-maps that had the room names printed over them, so that could be implemented.

    Way ahead of you ;)

The next build should have these included. I am displaying location names on the bigger version of the minimap (players can hold M to display a minimap that takes up most the screen).

    No more getting lost!

Hmm M for Minimap, makes sense :P

Though, considering the face-paced nature of NS2, maybe relocate the default key to the left hand side?
  • lunsluns Join Date: 2010-12-05 Member: 75502Members
are these minimaps like our old ones? will we see our own teammates on them, and will we see if any of our buildings attacked - we can quickly see it being attacked on our minimap? i can't stress this enough it has to be like old ns1 maps, teammates suppose to see each other, and see what is being attacked where, to quickly respond.

for those who don't know, pushing C opens up the minimap and that is how it should be done in ns2.

Another suggestion along the same line of thought is when duel screen support is added in, have one monitor display an "info" view and the other screen show the normal commander view. So, a person's second monitor would show the full-view minimap and the scoreboard or some other view. Basically, just a quick-shot information screen.

This. So far it's only been spoofed and fantasized about (I remember seeing a photoshopped image where someone had a dual-monitor setup with Company of Heroes that displayed the Map on monitor #2). It would be the totally awesome if NS2 were to (eventually) implement something like this. A true FPS/RTS experience.

Right now you can see all teammates, friendly resource towers, tech points, and structures in addition to the enemies if they are sighted by something. It works like the commander map (same code) except I made the blips update much more often than 1.5 seconds before.

I don't have any attack, defend, order, etc info yet although that kind of stuff will eventually be on there I am sure.

And regarding the duel monitor thing, Supreme Commander did this: <img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/367680656_a7032f3cb7.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm excited for the minimap for players. I often have to go back to the main hive and start from there because I have no idea where I am. Granted, it's getting easier once I learn the maps. But, I do believe a minimap should've been implemented from the get go.
  • ZekZek Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 7962Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
IMO we should have a full screen map but no minimap on the HUD. If the minimap is always visible people start navigating by that alone all the time and they never learn the maps properly. It detracts from the atmosphere too.
  • KuriinKuriin Join Date: 2011-01-08 Member: 76761Members
I'm going to have to disagree.

But, I thought of another thing...why aren't there locations listed on the top for commanders? I always have to type something to know the location. For instance, for Auxiliary Nodes, it should actually say, "Auxiliary Nodes" in that location. We really shouldn't have to type something to figure out what it is.

Or is this already in? Hahah.

I guess the Commander can also press M to see the whole map including names ;-)

Speaking of giving Ideas: What about an implemantation of the Logitech G15 / G19 Display?
(Yes, I know that is not necessary ;-) )
